We report a male patient with carcinoma arising on the basis of neglected sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease. Following initial operation, performed without suspicion of malignancy, histology demonstrated cellular atypia and an increased mitotic rate. A second, wider tissue excision was recommended but the patient declined further surgery. Two years later, he presented with fungating carcinoma involving the rectum but again declined surgery. This rare case demonstrates that the presence of carcinoma should be suspected in long-standing, although innocent-looking, pilonidal sinus disease. I

BACKGROUND: Many treatments for symptomatic pilonidal sinus disease have been described. Ambulatory treatment with minimal morbidity and a rapid return to normal activity is desirable. Bascom's operation fulfils these requirements. This paper describes the operative technique and results of treatment.
METHODS: Some 218 patients of mean age 27 years were treated as day cases. The mean duration of symptoms was 2.4 years. Sixty-eight per cent of patients had complex disease with more than two midline pits and/or a lateral discharging sinus. One hundred and eighty-three patients (84 per cent) wer

One hundred and two patients with a pilonidal sinus treated by minor excision had a life-table of 5-year freedom from recurrence of 89% provided that they attended a dressing clinic until the wound healed. With failure to attend the clinic, the recurrence freedom fell to 57% (P less than 0.004). Age, sex, acute abscess, previous excision, presence of hairs and the number of midline pits and lateral abscesses did not significantly influence the result. The method supersedes more extensive procedures, but should be tested against even less traumatic techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is an acquired chronic infection that commonly involves the natal cleft, is difficult to treat and has high recurrence after surgery. The parasacral perforator flap is a useful and effective flap for coverage after excision of disease. However, it requires technical expertise and specialised equipment. We have modified the technique by leaving the base of the flap, the perforator and surrounding tissue and fat intact, making the procedure easier for general or plastic surgeons to perform.
METHODS: We included 20 consecutive patients with PSD who und

INTRODUCTION: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus (PS) is a common condition in young adults, characterised by an inflammatory response due to hair impaction in the gluteal cleft. Optimal treatment remains controversial because of the morbidity and recurrence associated with conventional techniques. The endoscopic EPSIT technique has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the recurrence rate of EPSIT and, secondarily, postoperative complications, healing time, and return to daily activities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational study including 104 patients with primar

Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a suppurative inflammatory condition characterized by a sinus tract in the sacrococcygeal gluteal cleft and surrounding skin. Surgical resection is an important treatment for PSD; however, postoperative recurrence occurs in some patients, severely affecting their quality of life. Due to the lack of objective clinical indicators for predicting recurrence, developing an artificial intelligence-based prediction model is an effective approach. In this study, postoperative hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained pathological sections from PSD patients were used. The hor

AIM AND BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of pilonidal sinus treatment is to minimize complications, accelerate wound healing, and minimize recurrence. However, invasive and minimally invasive methods are being developed to reduce these problems. Early and late postoperative complications remain significant problems in pilonidal surgery. This study aimed to contribute to this issue in surgery by comparing the results of the Karydakis flap (KF) technique and those of the partial primary closure (PPC) technique, to which we applied suture modification.
METHODS: A total of 96 patients diagnosed wi

OBJECTIVES: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus is a common disease especially in the Caucasians of the Middle East. It has been reported in the incidence of 12-26 in a 100.000 population. Previously thought to be due to etiological reasons of congenital origin, it is now widely accepted as an acquired disease. The optimal treatment for pilonidal sinus disease still has no consensus. The elliptical rotation flap was first described by Nessar in the surgery of pilonidal sinus and reported successful results, but it has weak points. The purpose of this study was to share the findings of the fasciocut

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pilonidal sinus is a common problem in the sacrococcygeal region, especially in obese, sedentary young men. The ideal surgical solution is still under debate, and there is a high rate of recurrence. In the present study, we analyzed the long-term results of a video-assisted minimally invasive technique for the treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease: endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (EPSiT).
METHODS: From October 2013 through November 2015, a total of 77 consecutive patients (69 Males and 8 Females, median age: 23 y) were referred to our colorectal units.

The optimal treatment of the pilonidal sinus has not currently been defined. This study described the use of a modified bilateral transpositional adipofascial flap technique that effectively serves to flatten the deep natal cleft while keeping the scar limited to the intergluteal fold for good cosmesis. Between June 2007 and September 2011, 83 patients (61 men, 22 women) were included in the study. Duration of pilonidal sinus symptoms ranged from 1-15 (median 5) years; 15 patients had recurrent disease. Before the operation, perforating branches of the four pairs of lateral sacral arteries wer

A neoplasm associated with a pilonidal sinus (PS) is a rare occurrence in the course of a common disease. Early detection is imperative. To our knowledge, pilonidal disease associated with a cellular blue nevus (CBN) has not been reported. There is a 10% diagnostic error rate with this last lesion. Here we report the case of a 19-year-old man with recurrent sacrococcygeal PS infection associated with an indurated dome-shaped blue-black nodule 1.7 cm in diameter. Clinical diagnosis of the nodule was uncertain suggesting a pigmentary or a vascular tumor. A complete resection of the two lesions w

PURPOSE: Several methods of managing the sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus have been described, and fervent arguments for each form of therapy can be found in the literature. Recurrence unfortunately plagues all forms of therapy, though it is evident that the lowest rates have been reported for procedures involving local flap reconstruction. We conducted this case review to evaluate the validity of a simple reconstructive procedure for recurrent pilonidal disease.
METHODS: We describe the application of the V-Y fasciocutaneous advancement flap to reconstruct the defect following radical excision

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a chronic inflammatory condition commonly affecting the sacrococcygeal region, particularly in adolescents and young adults. Traditional open surgical approaches are associated with prolonged recovery, high complication rates, and recurrence. The advent of endoscopic techniques, such as Pediatric Endoscopic Pilonidal Sinus Treatment (PEPSiT), offers a promising alternative, reducing discomfort and potentially improving outcomes. The aims of the study were to compare the effectiveness and safety of PEPSiT versus traditional open excision in the treat

Pilonidal sinus is a recognized occupational condition sometimes seen in barbers and pet groomers, and it involves most commonly interdigital spaces. We present a previously unreported case of chronic paronychia with 2 separate digital pilonidal sinuses resulting from multiple embedded hair fragments in the eponychium of a dog groomer, who had been repeatedly treated with antibiotics with no success and ended up having surgical treatment. The objective of this study is to remind readers of this rare but possible occupational disease, particularly among employees working with hair, and to empha

Pilonidal disease usually arises in the sacrococcygeal area in young men. We present a case of a 39-year-old male with an initial diagnosis of perianal fistula. Despite clinical examination and pelvic magnetic resonance image, only during surgery was revealed that the origin of the fistula was in perianal pilonidal disease. Perianal pilonidal sinus are very rare in the literature. It is often confused with other perianal diseases such as anal fistula. Thus, perianal pilonidal disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of perianal fistula.

AIM: Pediatric endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (PEPSiT) has favorable short-term-outcomes, but there is a lack of reliable data on medium and long-term follow-up. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness and advantages of PEPSiT versus conventional surgery of pilonidal sinus in the pediatric population.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was carried out in pediatric patients undergoing pilonidal sinus surgery at a single institution from 2019 to 2022. Excision and healing by secondary intention (EHSI), excision and primary closure (EPC), and PEPSiT were compared. The

BACKGROUND Pilonidal Sinus (PNS) is a small cutaneous orifice in the intergluteal region; symptoms include pain and swelling. Disparately, desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma (DNM) accounts for 1% of all melanomas and mostly occurs in the head and neck region. Because its appearance is generally benign, it typically comes to surgical attention only at an advanced stage or after recurrence. A perineural involvement occurs in 30-40% of the cases and is accompanied by symptoms such as paresthesia, paresis, and/or paralysis. To the best of our knowledge, the association between PNS and DNM has not b

OBJECTIVE: In the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease different approaches are used such as conservative treatment and fasciocutaneous rotation flap. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of "de-epithelialization technique" as a new approach in pilonidal sinus disease treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty pilonidal sinus disease patients treated with de-epithelialization method were evaluated retrospectively. Patient age, gender, body mass index, wound healing time, visual analog scale scores, operation times, hospital stay duration, drain removal time, cosmetic satisfaction ra
