The RegJoint™ (Scaffdex Oy, Finland) implant is a bio-absorbable poly-L/D-lactide implant which acts as a temporary support in resected joint spaces. It can be used in base of thumb surgery as a spacer to prevent first metacarpal subsidence. However, high rates of adverse tissue reactions and bone osteolysis have been reported recently by one group. The objective of this study was to investigate the outcome of patients treated in our institution with this implant. Patients underwent a postoperative clinical and radiological assessment. The QuickDASH questionnaire, Patient Evaluation Measure (P

We compared the short-term recovery of patients treated with trapeziometacarpal joint (TMJ) implant arthroplasty versus resection-suspension-interposition (RSI) arthroplasty. Implant patients (n = 147) had a better 3-month postoperative brief Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHQ) score (mean 82) compared to RSI patients (n = 127), who had a mean score of 69. Key pinch strength at 3 months was also higher in the implant group compared to the RSI group (6.8 kg vs. 3.1 kg). At 1 year, both groups had similar brief MHQ scores, but key pinch remained higher in the implant group (7.0 kg vs. 3.9

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify the optimal follow-up method for evaluation of the surgical outcome for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 2006 and December 2010, 61 hands of a total of 46 patients (7 males, 39 females; mean age 56.0±10.4 years; range, 20 to 71 years) with a diagnosis of CTS were retrospectively analyzed. All operations were performed by a single surgeon with a mini-incision distal to the transverse carpal ligament. At a mean follow-up of seven years after surgery, electromyography (EMG) was repeated for all patients. The Boston Carpal

BACKGROUND: The effects of treatment of children with longitudinal radial deficiency are generally evaluated by measuring grip and pinch strength and joint mobility. Insight into limitations of activities of children with radial deficiency is scarce. In this study, we used standardized instruments to assess impairments in hand function and activity limitations and explored the relationship between the two.
METHODS: We evaluated the hand function of twenty children with radial deficiency who were between four and twelve years of age. Impairments in hand function were assessed by measuring grip

INTRODUCTION: Reconstruction for open multiple transmetacarpal amputation secondary to a crushing injury is really challenging. Some treatment approaches could be proposed. To avoid the drawbacks of a prosthesis and hand transplantation such as the high cost, and long-term side effects of anti-rejection drugs, toe transfers were chosen.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 33 year-old man suffered a crushing injury that led to a left transmetacarpal amputation and a right arm amputation. The left hand was reconstructed by toe transfers to restore the thumb, index and middle fingers. After 75 months of fol

INTRODUCTION: Arthrodesis is a reliable surgical procedure for treatment of thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis that provides hand strength and pain relief. Locking plate fixation is a common technique that provides rigid fixation and a high rate of bone union; however, it requires extensive surgical exploration of the first metacarpal and trapezium. Here, we report the surgical outcome of minimally invasive arthroscopy-assisted thumb CMC arthrodesis that preserves soft tissue supplying the blood flow to the bones.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine thumbs of nine patients who underwent arthr

This study aimed to assess the outcome of supinator to posterior interosseus nerve transfer, followed by tendon transfer, to restore grasp function in patients with mid-to-high-level cervical spine injuries. Fifteen upper limbs in 11 patients with these injuries were included. The outcomes were then compared with a historical control group consisting of 16 upper limbs that received tendon transfers alone. The outcome was assessed using the Canadian occupational performance measure, ability to open the first web space, and grip and pinch strength 12 months after surgery. The Canadian occupation

This study presents 5-year results of a randomized controlled trial comparing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) with the Maïa prosthesis and trapeziectomy for trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis. Sixty-two women aged 40 and older scheduled for surgery were randomized. The primary outcome was daily hand function using the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHOQ). Secondary outcomes included MHOQ subscales, range of motion, strength, satisfaction, complications and survival. Follow-up data were available for 28 TJA and 26 trapeziectomy patients. At 5-years, TJA did not show superior patient

BACKGROUND: A poor evidence basis exists regarding directly comparing objective and subjective donor-site morbidity associated with the forearm flap. The authors evaluated the postoperative donor-site complications and quality-of-life outcomes between the radial forearm free flap (RFFF) and the ulnar forearm free flap (UFFF).
METHODS: All patients undergoing RFFF or UFFF harvest were included. Grip strength, pinch strength, wrist range of movement, and testing of skin sensitivity were assessed with the appropriate scales at different time intervals. In addition, appearance and quality of life

Background: With ageing of the population, there is an increasing likelihood that elderly people will seek employment, with a resultant increase in the incidence of hand injuries, including digital amputations. However, the surgical indication for replantation of an amputated digit in elderly patients is controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare functional outcomes after single-digit replantation of the thumb to long finger in older (≥65 years old) and younger (<65 years old) patients to assess the feasibility of digit replantation in the elderly population. Methods: A retrospect

OBJECTIVES: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition causing hand pain, dysfunction, and paresthesia. Endoscopic carpal tunnel decompression offers many advantages compared with conventional open surgical decompression. However, it is equipment intensive and requires familiarity with endoscopic surgery. We review a minimally invasive technique to divide the flexor retinaculum by using a new instrument, the KnifeLight (Stryker, Kalamazoo, Michigan), which combines the advantages of the open and endoscopic methods, without the need for endoscopic set-up.
METHODS: Between July 2003 and April
