P300 from normals and adult children of alcoholics.

The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) was obtained from 24 pairs of undergraduate male subjects. One member of each pair reported having a father who was alcoholic (FH+), the other reported no alcoholic family member (FH-). Pairs were matched on height, weight, academic performance, and personal drinking history. Three auditory task situations were employed which manipulated stimulus discrimination difficulty. All tasks employed 20% target and 80% standard tones randomly presented with the subjects required to move their index finger whenever a target tone was detected. No differences i

Central auditory processing in adults with chronic stroke without hearing loss: A magnetoencephalography study.

OBJECTIVE: Stroke lesions in non-auditory areas may affect higher-order central auditory processing. We sought to characterize auditory functions in chronic stroke survivors with unilateral arm/hand impairment using auditory evoked responses (AERs) with lesion and perception metrics. METHODS: The AERs in 29 stroke survivors and 14 controls were recorded with single tones, active and passive frequency-oddballs, and a dual-oddball with pitch-contour and time-interval deviants. Performance in speech-in-noise, mistuning detection, and moving-sound detection was assessed. Relationships between AER

Choice of test stimulus matters for pitch matching performance: Comparison between pure tone and narrow band noise.

Chronic tinnitus, a symptom of high prevalence, is a persistent hearing sensation in the absence of an external sound source. Recent electrophysiological studies indicate that tinnitus generation is to a high degree the result of maladaptive plasticity in the central auditory pathway. The pitch of the tinnitus sensation can be assessed by performing a pitch matching procedure. In the most frequent "tonal tinnitus" type pure tones are used as test stimuli. However, in the case of tonal tinnitus not a single malfunctioning neuron, but rather a population of neighbouring neurons is involved in th

Towards an understanding of speech and song perception.

The human singing voice plays an important role in music of all societies. It is an extremely flexible instrument and is capable of producing a tremendous range of sounds. As such, the human voice can be hard to classify and poses a major challenge for automatic audio discrimination and classification systems. Speech/song discrimination is an implicit goal of speech/music discrimination, where a division is sought between speech and song, such that the singing voice can be grouped together with other musical instruments in the same category. However, the division between speech and song is unc

The role of binaural input in music perception: Evidence from adults with single-sided deafness.

Single-sided deafness (SSD) is characterized by unilateral auditory deprivation, which disrupts binaural hearing. This study aimed to evaluate music perception in adults with SSD using behavioral measures and subjective ratings. Thirty adults with SSD were compared with 54 normal-hearing (NH) listeners tested under binaural (NH-B, n = 27) and simulated acute monaural (NH-M, n = 27) conditions in a free-field setup. Behavioral music perception was assessed using the Clinical Assessment of Music Perception (CAMP) battery, including Pitch Direction Discrimination (PDD), Timbre Recognition (TR), a

Music processing deficits in Landau-Kleffner syndrome: Four case studies in adulthood.

Verbal-auditory agnosia and aphasia are the most prominent symptoms in Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS), a childhood epilepsy that can have sustained long-term effects on language processing. The present study provides the first objective investigation of music perception skills in four adult patients with a diagnosis of LKS during childhood, covering the spectrum of severity of the syndrome from mild to severe. Pitch discrimination, short-term memory for melodic, rhythmic and verbal information, as well as emotion recognition in music and speech prosody were assessed with listening tests, and s

The basis of musical consonance as revealed by congenital amusia.

Some combinations of musical notes sound pleasing and are termed "consonant," but others sound unpleasant and are termed "dissonant." The distinction between consonance and dissonance plays a central role in Western music, and its origins have posed one of the oldest and most debated problems in perception. In modern times, dissonance has been widely believed to be the product of "beating": interference between frequency components in the cochlea that has been believed to be more pronounced in dissonant than consonant sounds. However, harmonic frequency relations, a higher-order sound attribut

Evaluation of Fine Structure Coding in New Cochlear Implant Users with Tonotopic Fitting: a Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind, Cross-Over Study.

OBJECTIVES.: Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of tonotopic fitting on speech-in-noise perception in new cochlear implant (CI) users. However, these studies used different coding strategies (CIS, HDCIS, FSP, FS4, or mixed) with different frequency spectra. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of fine structure (FS) cues on speech perception in noise and in quiet and music perception, in new CI users with a tonotopic fitting map. METHODS.: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, 2-period crossover study was performed from April 2023 to June 2024. All participants had to

Cross-Frequency Brain Network Dynamics Support Pitch Change Detection.

Processing auditory sequences involves multiple brain networks and is crucial to complex perception associated with music appreciation and speech comprehension. We used time-resolved cortical imaging in a pitch change detection task to detail the underlying nature of human brain network activity, at the rapid time scales of neurophysiology. In response to tone sequence presentation to the participants, we observed slow inter-regional signaling at the pace of tone presentations (2-4 Hz) that was directed from auditory cortex toward both inferior frontal and motor cortices. Symmetrically, motor

A Comparison of Place-Pitch-Based Interaural Electrode Matching Methods for Bilateral Cochlear-Implant Users.

Interaural place-of-stimulation mismatch for bilateral cochlear-implant (BI-CI) listeners is often evaluated using pitch-comparison tasks that can be susceptible to procedural biases. Bias effects were compared for three sequential interaural pitch-comparison tasks in six BI-CI listeners using single-electrode direct stimulation. The reference (right ear) was a single basal, middle, or apical electrode. The comparison electrode (left ear) was chosen from one of three ranges: basal half, full array, or apical half. In Experiment 1 (discrimination), interaural pairs were chosen randomly (method

Abnormal cross-frequency coupling in the tinnitus network.

Neuroimaging studies have identified networks of brain areas and oscillations associated with tinnitus perception. However, how these regions relate to perceptual characteristics of tinnitus, and how oscillations in various frequency bands are associated with communications within the tinnitus network is still incompletely understood. Recent evidence suggests that apart from changes of the tinnitus severity the changes of tinnitus dominant pitch also have modulating effect on the underlying neuronal activity in a number of brain areas within the tinnitus network. Therefore, in a re-analysis of

Linguistic pitch is hierarchically encoded in the right ventral stream.

A challenge for speech perception research is to explain how listeners transform speech sounds into meaning. Using MEG and complementary analytical methods, we expose the neural dynamics that generate meaningful linguistic units (e.g., sentence type: question, statement) that are abstracted from lower-level perceptual cues (fundamental frequency (f0) modulations). In analogy to the well-established left-lateralized hierarchical organization of a ventral stream in the domains of vision and auditory processing, we show that the emergence of abstract f0 representations is supported by a right-lat

Human frequency following responses to iterated rippled noise with positive and negative gain: Differential sensitivity to waveform envelope and temporal fine-structure.

The perceived pitch of iterated rippled noise (IRN) with negative gain (IRNn) is an octave lower than that of IRN with positive gain (IRNp). IRNp and IRNn have identical waveform envelopes (ENV), but differing stimulus waveform fine structure (TFS), which likely accounts for this perceived pitch difference. Here, we examine whether differences in the temporal pattern of phase-locked activity reflected in the human brainstem Frequency Following Response (FFR) elicited by IRNp and IRNn can account for the differences in perceived pitch for the two stimuli. FFRs using a single onset polarity were

Using prism adaptation to alleviate perception of unilateral tinnitus: A case study.

Tinnitus is described as an uncomfortable sound or noise heard by an individual in the absence of an external sound source. Treating this phantom perception remains difficult even if drug and nondrug therapies are used to alleviate symptoms. The present case study aimed to investigate whether prism adaptation could induce beneficial aftereffects in a tinnitus sufferer. A 75-year-old man, R. B., with chronic unilateral tinnitus in the left ear reported a self-estimation of parameters of his tinnitus-discomfort, pitch and loudness-and performed a manual line-bisection task to study the consequen

Acoustics and perception of overtone singing.

Overtone singing, a technique of Asian origin, is a special type of voice production resulting in a very pronounced, high and separate tone that can be heard over a more or less constant drone. An acoustic analysis is presented of the phenomenon and the results are described in terms of the classical theory of speech production. The overtone sound may be interpreted as the result of an interaction of closely spaced formants. For the lower overtones, these may be the first and second formant, separated from the lower harmonics by a nasal pole-zero pair, as the result of a nasalized articulation

Sensory-cognitive interaction in the neural encoding of speech in noise: a review.

BACKGROUND: Speech-in-noise (SIN) perception is one of the most complex tasks faced by listeners on a daily basis. Although listening in noise presents challenges for all listeners, background noise inordinately affects speech perception in older adults and in children with learning disabilities. Hearing thresholds are an important factor in SIN perception, but they are not the only factor. For successful comprehension, the listener must perceive and attend to relevant speech features, such as the pitch, timing, and timbre of the target speaker's voice. Here, we review recent studies linking S

Development of a Pitch Discrimination Screening Test for Preschool Children.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for tests of auditory discrimination for young children as this skill plays a fundamental role in the development of speaking, prereading, reading, language, and more complex auditory processes. Frequency discrimination is important with regard to basic sensory processing affecting phonological processing, dyslexia, measurements of intelligence, auditory memory, Asperger syndrome, and specific language impairment. PURPOSE: This study was performed to determine the clinical feasibility of the Pitch Discrimination Test (PDT) to screen the preschool child's a
