To investigate the toxicity of particles originating from coal-fired power plants it is necessary to consider the effects of both primary particles and secondary components formed in the air through atmospheric reactions. This report describes a new exposure system that can be used to expose animals to both directly emitted particles and to secondary particles. The system consists of three main components. The first is a sampling system to continuously collect and dilute power plant stack emissions. The second is a reaction laboratory that contains reaction chambers to simulate atmospheric rea

Immature pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) seeds contain gibberellin (GA) oxidases with unique catalytic properties resulting in GAs of unknown function for plant growth and development. Overexpression of pumpkin GA 7-oxidase (CmGA7ox) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) resulted in seedlings with elongated roots, taller plants that flower earlier with only a little increase in bioactive GA4 levels compared to control plants. In the same way, overexpression of the pumpkin GA 3-oxidase1 (CmGA3ox1) resulted in a GA overdose phenotype with increased levels of endogenous GA4. This indicates that, in Ar

Numerous studies argue that salicylic acid (SA) is an important component of the plant signal transduction pathway(s) leading to disease resistance. The discovery that the SA-binding protein is a catalase, whose activity is blocked by SA, led to the proposal that one of SA's modes of action is to inhibit this H2O2-degrading enzyme and thus elevate H2O2 levels. To test this model, an attempt was made to mimic the action of SA by reducing the synthesis of catalase using antisense RNA technology. Analyses of transgenic tobacco plants that expressed the tobacco catalase 1 (cat1) or catalase 2 (cat

Specific targeting of host genes by plant viruses leads to the induction of distinct disease symptoms with devastating consequences for agriculture. However, it is unknown whether plants have evolved genes to specifically inhibit the development of viral disease symptoms. Here we identified the causal gene in 2 Arabidopsis thaliana mutants that develop prominent systemic necrosis after infection with both wild-type cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and its mutant (CMV-Δ2b), which is defective in the suppression of antiviral RNA interference. We found that antiviral RNAi 5 (AVI5) is located in a larg

One of the mechanisms for subverting the effect of drugs by the malaria parasite is through rewiring of its transcriptome. The effect is more pronounced for target genes belonging to the multigene family. Plasmodium falciparum protein kinases belonging to the CDPK family are essential for blood stage development. As such, CDPKs are considered good targets for the development of anti-malarial compounds. The chemical genetics approach has been historically used to elucidate the function of protein kinases in higher eukaryotes. It requires the substitution of gatekeeper residue for another amino

High yield and stress resistance are the major prerequisites for successful crop cultivation, and can be achieved by modifying plant architecture. Evolutionarily conserved growth-regulating factors (GRFs) control the growth of different tissues and organs of plants. Here, we provide a systematic overview of the expression patterns of GRF genes and the structural features of GRF proteins in different plant species. Moreover, we illustrate the conserved and divergent roles of GRFs, microRNA396 (miR396), and GRF-interacting factors (GIFs) in leaf, root, and flower development. We also describe th

Bromeliaceae is restricted to the Neotropical region and has a high degree of endemism, which contributes to increased biodiversity because of the diverse morphological characteristics of individuals. In order to develop an in vitro conservation technology to obtain plants for reintroduction, seeds of Vriesea flammea L.B.Sm. were collected, sterilized and germinated in culture medium. The plants obtained were cultured for 180 days in MS medium with different concentrations of mineral nutrients (25 and 50% of nitrogenous salts and macronutrients), and different concentrations of sucrose (20, 30

Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial signaling molecule that conveys its bioactivity mainly through protein S-nitrosylation. This is a reversible post-translational modification (PTM) that may affect protein function. S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) is a cellular NO reservoir and NO donor in protein S-nitrosylation. The enzyme S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) degrades GSNO, thereby regulating indirectly signaling cascades associated with this PTM. Here, the two GSNORs of the legume Lotus japonicus, LjGSNOR1 and LjGSNOR2, have been functionally characterized. The LjGSNOR1 gene is very active in lea

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) proteins are exclusively found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In this study, we have characterized a gene from Glomerella leaf spot pathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides that encodes an ABC protein, whose function to date remains unknown. We designated this gene as CgABCF2. Deletion of CgABCF2 showed drastic reduction both growing rate and conidial production in C. gloeosporioides. The Δcgabcf2 mutant did not form the appressoria, lost the capability to infect apple and failed to form lesions on the wounded leaves and fruits. The C. gloeosporioides native CgAB

Endophytic and plant-associated bacteria were isolated from plants and rhizoplane soil of naturally grown Brachiaria grasses at International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. Eighty-four bacterial strains were isolated from leaf tissues, root tissues, and rhizoplane soil on nutrient agar and 869 media. All bacterial strains were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic unit using 16S rDNA primers and were characterized for the production of Indole-3-acetic acid, hydrogen cyanide, and ACC deaminase; phosphate solubilization; siderophore production; antifungal properties; and p

Ribosome-associated quality control (RaQC) pathways, including no-go decay (NGD) and non-stop decay (NSD), are essential for maintaining translational fidelity and regulating gene expression in eukaryotes. Central to these pathways is the conserved ribosome rescue factor PELOTA, which resolves stalled ribosomes and promotes the clearance of aberrant mRNAs and nascent polypeptides. While NGD and NSD have been extensively characterized in yeast and animals, our understanding of these processes in plants remains limited. Nevertheless, emerging evidence indicates that PELOTA plays a pivotal role i

Genetic regulation of fertility and sterility is a key determinant of reproductive success, seed formation, and hybrid breeding efficiency in crop plants. Modern genetics has encouraged us to analyze the genetic and molecular pathways of plant crops and discuss the respective roles of genes. The concept of modern genetics is so vast, and it has opened new doors in scientific research, like the introduction and analysis of several genes that direct plant developmental processes toward either fertility or sterility. Normal plant development depends on coordinated genetic regulation of reproducti

Chelates are nutrient-rich compounds that enhance the condition of plant tissues as micronutrients. Micronutrient deficiencies particularly iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) leads to various problems for plant including chlorosis and necrosis etc. An adequate intake of Fe and Zn etc. is required by the human body. Biofortification of cereals with Fe and Zn is seen as a cost-effective solution to the problem of Fe and Zn deficiencies as well. In recent decades, many chelating compounds have been established and incorporated into agricultural systems. The most recent formulation involves the use of amino

As global health care demand continues to increase, medicinal plant productivity must progress without exhausting critical environmental resources. Hence, it is important to explore practices that can improve the quality, safety, and sustainability of medicinal plants, as well as ecological stability. Organic farming has recently gained significance as a sustainable cultivation alternative owing to increased awareness of the adverse effects of conventional cultivation method. Here, this study aimed to investigate the feasibility of organic farming as a solution for sustainable cultivation of m

Snakebite envenomation (SBE) is an important public health issue that is now receiving renewed attention following its reclassification as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD). Most incidences occur in rural areas of resource-limited countries, as such, timely and appropriate medical care for SBE is often inaccessible. The administration of anti-snake venom serum (ASV) is the only effective definitive treatment of SBE, but treatment failure to available ASVs is not uncommon. Emerging evidence highlights the potential of small-molecule compounds as inhibitors against toxins of snake venom. This p

An automated system was designed and built to continuously monitor plant health and growth in a controlled environment using a distributed system approach for operational control and data collection. The computer-controlled system consisted of a motorized turntable to present the plants to the stationary sensors and reduce microclimate variability among the plants. Major sensing capabilities of the system included machine vision, infrared thermometry, time domain reflectometry, and micro-lysimeters. The system also maintained precise growth-medium moisture levels through a computer-controlled

Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) catalyzes the decarboxylation of glutamate to CO2 and gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA). GAD is ubiquitous in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, but only plant GAD has been shown to bind calmodulin (CaM). Here, we assess the role of the GAD CaM-binding domain in vivo. Transgenic tobacco plants expressing a mutant petunia GAD lacking the CaM-binding domain (GADdeltaC plants) exhibit severe morphological abnormalities, such as short stems, in which cortex parenchyma cells fail to elongate, associated with extremely high GABA and low glutamate levels. The morphology of transgenic

Urban air pollution has been a global challenge world-wide. While urban vegetation or forest modelling can be useful in reducing the toxicities of the atmospheric gases by their absorption, the surge in gaseous pollutants negatively affects plant growth, thereby altering photosynthetic efficiency and harvest index. The present review analyses our current understanding of the toxic and beneficial effects of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO) on plant growth and metabolism. The atmospheric levels of these gases vary considerably due to urbanizatio

Arsenic (As) contamination in paddy soils and its further translocation to the rice is a serious global issue. Arsenic loading to the rice depends on soil physico-chemical parameters and agronomic practices. To minimize this natural threat, as a natural substance, rice straw was used to produce rice biochar (RBC) and doped with iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles, another eco-friendly composite. In this study, RBC was used at three different concentrations- 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% alone as well as conjugated with fixed 20 ppm IO nanoparticles. These treatments were compared with the control soil and cont
