BACKGROUND: Bilateral Acute Depigmentation of the Iris (BADI) is a condition which was first described in a case series from Turkey by Tugal-Tutkin and Urgancioglu in (Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol 244:742-6, 2006). The condition is characterized by bilateral acute depigmentation and discoloration of the iris stroma, pigment dispersion, and deposition of pigment in the angle. In our case we report a patient who developed BADI after receiving pitcher plant extract injections for chronic migraine, while her identical twin sister has normal iris architecture and pigmentation and never received

Biocontrol agents serve as a sustainable means of controlling wilt caused by the widespread plant pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. The present study aimed to develop water dispersible granules (WDG) using response surface methodology (RSM) for Bacillus subtilis MTCC 2274 and Trichoderma harzianum MTCC 3928, and to compare their antifungal efficacy with other formulations. Further, characterization of the bioactive metabolites responsible for biocontrol was performed. A new microbial formulation, WDG, was developed in the present study with talcum powder (substrate), alginic aci

Restricted migration and habitat fragmentation promote genetic differentiation between populations. Because most of the hosts of Panonychus citri are woody plants, mainly citrus trees that are usually planted at intervals of several metres, this mite likely faces more risks (e.g., starvation) by dispersing between host plants, compared to other spider mite species that infest both herbaceous and woody plants, such as Tetranychus urticae. Such a limited gene flow between patches (host plants) can lead to differentiation of populations even within a small area. Therefore, we hypothesize that P.

The present study was conducted with the aim of improving faecal coliform (FC) and faecal streptococcus (FS) removal efficiencies in tertiary maturation stages of a sewage treatment plant in Southern England, where climatic conditions are sub-optimal. The research used intensive field assessments (bacteriological, general quality and hydraulic) to identify the parameters that affect the bacteriological quality of the effluent from three parallel maturation ponds (North, Central and South) of similar geometry and dimensions. An engineering intervention was carried out to convert the South pond

Rodents influence plant establishment and regeneration by functioning as both seed predators and dispersers. However, these rodent-plant interactions can vary significantly due to various environmental conditions and the activity of other insect seed predators. Here, we use a combination of both field and enclosure (i.e. individual cage and semi-natural enclosure) experiments, to determine whether rodents can distinguish sound seeds from those infested with insects. We also demonstrate how such responses to insects are influenced by food abundance and other environmental factors. We presented

Knowledge on colonization modes and interplant movement of Nasonovia ribisnigri can contribute to the development of optimal control of this pest. The aim of this study was to determine the spatio-temporal distribution and the mode of spread between adult morphs of Nasonovia ribisnigri, comparing spring and autumn lettuce protected crops. The spatial and temporal pattern was analyzed using the spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE) methodology and other related displacement indices. The population size of N. ribisnigri was greater in the autumn than in the spring growing seasons due to m

BACKGROUND: Plants (attached photosynthesizing organisms) are eaten by a wide variety of herbivorous animals. Despite a vast literature on plant defence, contrasting patterns of antiherbivore adaptation among marine, freshwater and land plants have been little noticed, documented or understood.
SCOPE: Here I show how the surrounding medium (water or air) affects not only the plants themselves, but also the sensory and locomotor capacities of herbivores and their predators, and I discuss patterns of defence and host specialization of plants and herbivores on land and in water. I analysed the l

Plants are increasingly recognized as metaorganisms because they harbor diverse and dynamic microbial communities that establish intricate symbiotic associations and collectively regulate plant growth, development, and adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Plant-associated microorganisms colonize distinct ecological niches, including the rhizosphere, phyllosphere, endosphere, and surrounding soil, where they contribute to nutrient acquisition, phytohormone production, disease suppression, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. These multifunctional interactions have positione

Essential oils are secondary metabolites that plants produce for protection from pests and predators, attraction of pollinators, and seed dispersal. The oils are made up of a mixture of compounds that give a characteristic flavour and odour. Currently, essential oils are receiving great attention in research for their phytochemical and antimicrobial activities. However, there is scanty information on the chemical composition of many plants. This study provides a detailed analysis of the chemical composition of essential oils of ginger, garlic, tick berry, and Mexican marigold in Kenya. The ess

Fate of chlorinated solvents in phytoremediation has been delineated by many discoveries made in recent years. Plant uptake, metabolism, rhizosphere degradation, accumulation, and volatilization were shown to occur to differing degrees for many organic contaminants including chlorinated solvents. Among these mechanistic findings, recent research confirmed that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) volatilize from stems and that the resulting diffusive flux to the atmosphere is related to exposure concentration and to height up the stem. A comprehensive model was developed based upon all identified

The focus of this paper is on the impact of approaches used to improve protein solubility on its interfacial activity. A range of approaches are used to disperse vegetable proteins in water to stabilize emulsions. Applying physical fields like sonication while pH shifting is thought to have synergistic effects on the emulsifying activity of plant proteins. But the key structural features of proteins that are altered by modification and affect adsorbed layer formation remain unclear. This study evaluated the effects of combining pH shifting and ultrasonication on the interfacial properties of p

LIM (Lin-11, Isl-1, and Mec-3 domain) proteins are evolutionarily conserved proteins that regulate diverse cellular processes in plants, including actin cytoskeleton organization, organ size determination, protein stability, and transcription-associated regulation. Therefore, these proteins have emerged as important regulators of plant growth, development, and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Numerous genome-wide studies, functional analyses, and mechanistic investigations in diverse plant species have considerably expanded our understanding of this gene family. However, these advance

Ralstonia solanacearum species complex (RSSC) pathogens cause destructive plant wilt diseases of a wide variety of crops, leading to significant agricultural losses worldwide. These bacteria rapidly spread through the water-transporting xylem where they grow prolifically and produce abundant biofilm that clogs xylem vessels. To understand RSSC biofilm behavior in planta, we examined their complex fluid mechanics. Rheological analyses revealed that unlike all previously analyzed microbial biofilms, RSSC biofilms are shear-thinning, viscoelastic fluids at physiologically relevant shear forces. T

3MPA-CdTe QDs in aqueous dispersion was used as a fluorescent probe for the determination of lapachol, a natural naphthoquinone found in plants of the Bignoniaceae family genus Tabebuia. Working QDs dispersions (4.5×10(-8) mol L(-1) of QDs) was prepared in aqueous media containing Tris-HCl buffer pH 7.4 and methanol (10% in volume). The excitation was made at 380 nm with signal measurement at 540 nm. To establish a relationship between fluorescence (corrected to inner filter effect) and concentration of lapachol, a Stern-Volmer model was used. The linear range obtained was from 1.0×10(-5) to 1

BACKGROUND: The recent increment of the incidence of Community Associated Clostridium difficile Infection (CA)-CDI has led to speculation that this disease is associated to foodborne transmission. Therefore it is critical to establish the community sources of CDI in order to implement the appropriate interventions. The present study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of C. difficile in seasoned hamburger and examine the sources of C. difficile dispersal in hamburger processing plants. A total of 211 samples including hamburger ingredients, the final product, processing equipment and food

In this study, for the monitoring and quantification of p-coumaric acid (p-CA) in vinegar, carrot juice, and seed extract from the plant species Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn, an efficient and low-cost analytical method has been applied. For this purpose, a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) method, followed by UV-Vis spectrophotometric detection, was used. To form a cloudy solution, a binary mixture containing ethanol as a disperser solvent and chloroform as an extraction solvent was rapidly injected by syringe into a sample solution containing p-CA. After centrifugation, dilutio

Cyanogenic glycosides (CGs) represent an important group of secondary metabolites predominantly of plant origin, characterized by their ability to release hydrogen cyanide upon enzymatic hydrolysis. These compounds are widely distributed across the plant kingdom, where they play a crucial role in defense against herbivores and pathogens. In recent years, advanced analytical tools have greatly expanded our knowledge of CGs by enabling the identification of less abundant forms. Based on the latest data from published scientific studies, this review presents a comprehensive overview of CGs, with

Chronic herbivory by elephants rarely eliminates any species of woody savanna plants because these plants are typically vigorous basal resprouters after damage by fire or herbivory. In some instances, resprouting after elephant herbivory even increases stem numbers per unit area compared to protected areas. It is thus difficult to know whether an area has been severely degraded by elephant herbivory or not because although trees may be severely reduced in size, they will still be present and may even be relatively dense. By using an elephant exclosure in the Kruger National Park, South Africa,
