The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between intercellular spaces and leaf gas exchange and the effect of total intercellular space on the growth of maize and sorghum under water restriction. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement (two plant types and three water conditions: field capacity (FC = 100%), 75%FC, and 50%FC) with 10 replicates. The lack of water was a limiting factor for maize because it showed reductions in leaf area, leaf thickness, biomass, and gas exchange parameters, while sorghum remained unchanged, maintaining

Peronospora belbahrii is a biotrophic oomycete attacking sweet basil. It propagates asexually by producing spores on dichotomously branched sporophores emerging from leaf stomata. Sporulation occurs when infected plants are incubated for at least 7.5h in the dark in moisture-saturated atmosphere at 10-27°C. Exposure to light suppresses spore formation but allows sporophores to emerge from stomata. Incandescent or CW fluorescent light of 3.5 or 6 µmoles.m(2).s(-1) respectively, caused 100% inhibition of spore formation on lower leaf surface even when only the upper leaf surface was exposed to l

Chemical abscisic acid (ABA) and/or hydraulic signals' role in modulating stomatal and water use efficiency (WUE) response of saline C4 crops to atmospheric doubled CO2 (d[CO2]) environment during progressive drought remains largely elusive. Here, C4 maize plants were grown in two [CO2] concentrations (ambient CO2 (a[CO2], 400 ppm) and d[CO2], 800 ppm) and subjected to two salt stress levels (0 and 100 mM NaCl pot-1) during progressive soil drought. The results indicated that maize leaf ABA concentration (ABAleaf) was increased and stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf hydraulic conductivity (Kle

The introduction of flavodiiron (FLV) proteins in angiosperms can modulate photosynthesis and photoprotection under fluctuating light conditions. However, the potential of FLV in crop improvement and chilling tolerance remains poorly understood. To address this, transgenic tobacco plants expressing the FLVA and FLVB genes from Physcomitrium patens were used to examine the influence of FLV on plant biomass and chilling tolerance. The results indicated that the steady-state CO₂ assimilation rate (AN) was not altered by the introduction of FLV. However, during shade-sun transitions, FLV lines exh

Nonspecific lipidtransfer proteins (nsLTPs), which are small, cysteine-rich proteins, belong to the pathogenesis-related protein family, and several of them act as positive regulators during plant disease resistance. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of these proteins in plant immune responses are unclear. In this study, a typical nsLTP gene, StLTP10, was identified and functionally analysed in potato. StLTP10 expression was significantly induced by Phytophthora infestans, which causes late blight in potato, and defence-related phytohormones, including abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic

The activation of the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway reduces water loss from plants challenged by drought stress. The effect of drought-induced ABA signaling on the defense and nutrition allocation of plants is largely unknown. We postulated that these changes can affect herbivorous insects. We studied the effects of drought on different feeding stages of pea aphids in the wild-type A17 of Medicago truncatula and ABA signaling pathway mutant sta-1. We examined the impact of drought on plant water status, induced plant defense signaling via the abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), an

Phospholipases D (PLDs) are important membrane lipid-modifying enzymes in eukaryotes. Phosphatidic acid, the product of PLD activity, is a vital signaling molecule. PLD-mediated lipid signaling has been the subject of extensive research leading to discovery of its crystal structure. PLDs are involved in the pathophysiology of several human diseases, therefore, viewed as promising targets for drug design. The availability of a eukaryotic PLD crystal structure will encourage PLD targeted drug designing. PLDs have been implicated in plants response to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the mol

The engineering of living plants for visible light emission and sustainable illumination is compelling because plants possess independent energy generation and storage mechanisms and autonomous self-repair. Herein, we demonstrate a plant nanobionic approach that enables exceptional luminosity and lifetime utilizing four chemically interacting nanoparticles, including firefly luciferase conjugated silica (SNP-Luc), d-luciferin releasing poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA-LH2), coenzyme A functionalized chitosan (CS-CoA) and semiconductor nanocrystal phosphors for longer wavelength modulation.

Asymmetric warming, characterized by faster increases in nighttime than daytime temperatures, is an emerging threat to crop performance. However, the interactive physiological effects of day versus night heat remain insufficiently resolved in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.). Here, we evaluated soybean responses to 4 day/night thermal regimes (28°C/22°C, 40°C/22°C, 28°C/28°C, and 40°C/28°C) to test whether nighttime warming is the dominant driver of stress disruption. Isolated daytime heat (40°C/22°C) enhanced photosynthetic performance and maintained biomass, indicating short-term functional pl

The intrinsic link between temperature and leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (Δe) complicates isolation of their individual effects on photosynthesis. Consequently, how CO2 diffusion changes under heat and high evaporative demand, particularly through mesophyll conductance (gm) responses, remains poorly understood. The conditions under which biochemical colimitation occurs, meaning Rubisco carboxylation and RuBP regeneration capacities match, are also unclear. To advance understanding of plant responses to climate change, we separated temperature and Δe effects by holding Δe at 1 and 2 kPa

Plants regulate gas exchange with the environment and modulate transpirational water flow through guard cells, which set the aperture of the stomatal pores. External and internal stimuli are detected by guard cells and integrated into a signalling network that modulate turgor pressure and, hence, pore size. Pathogen-associated molecular patterns are among the stimuli that induce stomatal closure, to prevent pathogen entry through the pores, and this response, also referred to as stomatal immunity, is one of the hallmarks of PAMP-triggered immunity. While reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated

Stomatal pore area is heterogeneous across leaf surfaces. This has been considered as "patchy stomatal conductance," and may have substantial implications for photosynthetic efficiency. Aerosols have always been important elements of plant environments, but their effects on stomatal control of plant water relations, and stomatal heterogeneity specifically, have not been considered. Here we evaluate the spatial coordination of pore area in the glabrous and homobaric leaves of Vicia faba grown under two aerosol treatments and measured at four levels of VPD. We construct a large dataset (n > 88,0

The plant Halimione portulacoides, an abundant species widely distributed in temperate salt-marshes, has been previously assessed as bioindicator and biomonitor of mercury contamination in these ecosystems. The present study aims to assess uptake and distribution of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) within H. portulacoides, potential mercury release by volatilization through leaves, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms by investigating plant photochemical responses. Stem cuttings of H. portulacoides were collected from a salt-marsh within the Tagus estuary natural protected area, a

Biological samples are far from homogeneous, with complex compartmentation being the norm. Major physiological processes such as respiration do not therefore occur in a uniform manner within most tissues, and it is currently not possible to image its gradients in living plant tissues. A compact fluorescence ratiometric-based device is presented here, consisting of an oxygen-sensitive foil and a USB (universal serial bus) microscope. The sensor foil is placed on the sample surface and, based on the localized change in fluorescence signal over time, information about the oxygen consumption (resp

Cytokinins (CKs) are plant hormones that regulate a large number of processes associated with plant growth and development such as induction of stomata opening, delayed senescence, suppression of auxin-induced apical dominance, signaling of nitrogen availability, differentiation of plastids and control of sink strength. In maize, CKs are thought to play an important role in establishing seed size and increasing seed set under normal and unfavorable environmental conditions therefore influencing yield. In recent years, the discovery of isopentenyl transferase (IPT) genes in plants has shed ligh

As climate change intensifies urban environmental challenges, cities increasingly rely on urban green spaces as climate adaptation infrastructure. Urban trees provide critical ecosystem services through root water uptake and leaf water loss, yet how their stomata respond to atmospheric drivers in tropical urban environments remains poorly understood. This research examines how ten dominant tree species in Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, Bangkok regulate stomatal conductance (gs) in response to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) across wet and dr

We designed P1G3, a light-triggered NO donor from N-nitroso-naphthalene derivatives, releasing NO via N-NO cleavage while producing fluorescent P1G2 for real-time tracking. The quantity of NO released from P1G3 in the cytoplasm can be precisely regulated by light duration and light intensity, thereby minimizing the risk of unintended self-leakage in biological settings. Utilizing a quantitative mapping relationship between nitric oxide release and fluorescence intensity, we calculated for the first time the nitric oxide conversion rate of a donor system in a cellular environment. Both a method

In recent years, serotonin has been proposed as a signaling molecule in several plant physiological processes, although evidence supporting this function remains limited to date. In particular, its involvement under water deficit conditions is poorly characterised, especially regarding its mechanism of action. This study aimed to determine the implication of serotonin in the response to water stress in rocket plants through three experimental approaches: (1) analysis of endogenous concentrations of indoleamines, tryptophan, serotonin, and melatonin during the acclimation response to stress, (2

Photorespiration is a mandatory metabolic repair shunt of carbon fixation by the Calvin-Benson cycle in oxygenic phototrophs. Its extent depends mainly on the CO2 : O2 ratio in chloroplasts, which is regulated via stomatal movements. Despite a comprehensive understanding of the role of photorespiration in mesophyll cells, its role in guard cells (GC) is unknown. Therefore, a key enzyme of photorespiration, glycine decarboxylase (GDC), was specifically manipulated by varying glycine decarboxylase H-protein (GDC-H) expression in Arabidopsis GC. Multiple approaches were used to analyze the transg

Plant cell type diversity often arises from transcriptional regulatory programs that co-opt conserved transcription factors (TFs) involved in other developmental programs. For example, the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) TF FAMA directs the differentiation of guard cells (GCs), and part of the FAMA regulatory network was co-opted to direct the differentiation of Brassicales-specific idioblasts known as myrosin cells (MCs). In this review, we explore how new cell types and lineage-specific innovations can be specified by the same conserved bHLH TFs through different sets of downstream targets. We
