The effect of emergent macrophytes on the dynamics of sulfur species and trace metals in wetland sediments.

This study focuses on the effect of plants on the biogeochemistry of sulfur species and the mobility of heavy metals in wetland sediments. Results showed that, in the presence of plants, sediments had elevated sulfate concentrations in the rhizosphere during the growing season, ranging from 0.2 to 6.20 mmol L(-1), whereas only a small difference in the sulfate profiles between vegetated and non-vegetated sediments was observed during senescence. Based on the sulfate concentration increase, the oxygen release rate from the roots to achieve the corresponding oxidation of sulfide was estimated as

Comparative evaluation of physical methods for extracting leaf trichomes.

Trichomes are hairlike protuberances in plants that deter herbivores using both physical and chemical means, with pre- and post-ingestive effects. In addition, trichomes also serve as a protective layer, reducing transpiration loss, thereby improving abiotic stress tolerance. A common method for assessing the role of trichomes in defense is to extract and infuse trichomes into the artificial diet, and then examine the feeding, growth, and developmental parameters of herbivores. Although methods such as brushing, using dry ice, and shaving with a razor, have been commonly used, there is no cons

Root-enriched β-amylase GmBAM-like 1 enhances drought and salt tolerance in Arabidopsis.

Water scarcity impacts soybean cultivation and productivity globally. The ability of plants to withstand drought stress involves complex molecular and physiological mechanisms that facilitate the restoration and maintenance of cellular homeostasis. This study identified genes associated with carbohydrate metabolism and GABA shunt pathway that respond to water deficit in two soybean varieties. These varieties exhibited contrasting responses to water scarcity, and were subjected to two distinct cropping systems. In the drought-tolerant variety, a strategy for conferring tolerance was observed th

Interaction of beneficial microorganisms and phenolic compounds in hydroponically cultivated tomato plants.

The combined effects of applying extracts derived from plant debris and biostimulant microorganisms have not been thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the interaction between these components and plants remains poorly understood. Utilizing the commercial cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Unidarkwin) as a study model, we conducted a hydroponic experiment in a controlled growth chamber to assess the impact of foliar application of phenolic compounds extracted from Vitis vinifera leaves, combined with the inoculation of Trichoderma harzianum or Bacillus velezensis via roots. Plant growth,

Enhanced drought tolerance of foxtail millet seedlings by sulfur dioxide fumigation.

Recently, sulfur dioxide (SO2) has been considered to be a beneficial bio-regulator in animals. However, the positive roles of SO2 in plant adaptation to drought stress are still unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological and molecular changes that are induced by SO2 fumigation to improve the drought tolerance of foxtail millet seedlings. The relative water content in the leaves of drought-stressed seedlings was significantly improved by pre-exposure to 30 mg/m3 SO2. These responses might be related to decreased stomatal apertures and a reduced leaf transpiration rate, which wer

Modeling of TCE diffusion to the atmosphere and distribution in plant stems.

Fate of chlorinated solvents in phytoremediation has been delineated by many discoveries made in recent years. Plant uptake, metabolism, rhizosphere degradation, accumulation, and volatilization were shown to occur to differing degrees for many organic contaminants including chlorinated solvents. Among these mechanistic findings, recent research confirmed that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) volatilize from stems and that the resulting diffusive flux to the atmosphere is related to exposure concentration and to height up the stem. A comprehensive model was developed based upon all identified

Rhamnogalacturonan-II Dimerisation Reinforces Salt Resistance in Sugar Beet.

Salinity stress predominantly affects negatively charged cell wall polymers, for example, pectin. Excess Na+ ions interact physically and affect growth in stress-sensitive plants. However, the salinity resistance of sugar beet cell walls remains unclear. To get a better understanding of cell wall assembly, we investigated arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs), extensins and pectic polysaccharides (homogalacturonan, rhamnogalacturonan-I and rhamnogalacturonan-II), in relation to underlying physiological mechanisms and growth expansion with low and adequate boron (B) under salinity. Findings revealed

Failure to Observe Stomatal ABA Responses in a Fern and a Lycophyte.

Stomatal closure induced by abscisic acid (ABA) is an important mechanism by which plants reduce transpiration under drought stress and is well studied in seed plants. However, ABA-induced stomatal closure in ferns and lycophytes has been reported in some studies but not in others, even within the same species, such as the fern Nephrolepis exaltata and the lycophyte Selaginella uncinata. Here, ABA-induced stomatal behaviour and ABA signalling components, including guard cell potassium ion (K+) and calcium ion (Ca2+) fluxes and vacuoles, were analysed in the seed plant Vicia faba, the fern N. e

Genetic markers of stomatal cluster development in Begoniaceae revealed through trait analysis assisted by interactive deep-learning.

Stomata of plants track the immediate demand for carbon dioxide for photosynthesis while limiting transpirational water loss. Solitary stomatal patterns are common, yet some land plants develop noncontiguous stomatal clustering, where 2 or more stomata occur in groups and overlay a single air cavity. Clustering improves stomatal efficiency, reduces plant water use, and increases resilience to environment stress. How cluster development and physiology interact and integrate with the environment are open questions. Here we used TESSERA, a deep-learning platform for stomatal detection with an int

Sequence and function of basic helix-loop-helix proteins required for stomatal development in Arabidopsis are deeply conserved in land plants.

Stomata are a broadly conserved feature of land plants with a crucial role regulating transpiration and gas exchange between the plant and atmosphere. Stereotyped cell divisions within a specialized cell lineage of the epidermis generate stomata and define the pattern of their distribution. The behavior of the stomatal lineage varies in its detail among different plant groups, but general features include asymmetric cell divisions and an immediate precursor (the guard mother cell [GMC]) that divides symmetrically to form the pair of cells that will differentiate into the guard cells. Changes of primary and secondary metabolites in barley plants exposed to CdO nanoparticles.

The environmental fate of airborne nanoparticles and their toxicity to plants is not yet fully understood. Pot-grown barley plants with second leaves developed were therefore exposed to CdO nanoparticles (CdONPs) of ecologically relevant size (7-60 nm) and concentration (2.03 ± 0.45 × 105 particles cm-3) in air for 3 weeks. An experiment was designed to test the effects of different treatments when only leaves (T1); leaves and soil substrate (T2); and leaves, soil, and water supply were exposed to nanoparticles (T3). A fourth, control group of plants was left without treatment (T0). Although C

Rainfed sugarcane under water limitation: agronomic challenges and breeding perspectives.

Sugarcane is a highly productive crop due to its high photosynthetic efficiency. Such productivity is associated with high water requirements, making sugarcane sensitive to water limitation. With a predominance of rainfed cultivation worldwide, sugarcane is increasingly exposed to drought under changing climate conditions. We highlight how sugarcane's response to water limitation is driven by plant developmental stage, canopy architecture and dynamics, root system functioning, and how these factors influence the identification of traits related to drought tolerance. We synthesize current knowl

Mercury cycling in agricultural and managed wetlands of California, USA: experimental evidence of vegetation-driven changes in sediment biogeochemistry and methylmercury production.

The role of live vegetation in sediment methylmercury (MeHg) production and associated biogeochemistry was examined in three types of agricultural wetlands (domesticated or white rice, wild rice, and fallow fields) and adjacent managed natural wetlands (cattail- and bulrush or tule-dominated) in the Yolo Bypass region of California's Central Valley, USA. During the active growing season for each wetland, a vegetated:de-vegetated paired plot experiment demonstrated that the presence of live plants enhanced microbial rates of mercury methylation by 20 to 669% (median=280%) compared to de-vegetat

Generalized hydromechanical model for stomatal responses to hydraulic perturbations.

Stomata respond in a common pattern to various hydraulic perturbations on any part of the 'soil-plant-air' system: initial transient 'wrong-way' responses and final stationary 'right-way' responses. In order to describe this pattern on the basis of statistical physics, we propose a simple model where turgor pressure of a cell is taken to be a power function of its volume, and obtain results in qualitative agreement with experimental data for responses to a variety of hydraulic perturbations: Firstly, stationary stomatal conductance as a function of the vapor pressure deficit divides into three

The silver lining of antibiotic resistance: Bacterial-mediated reduction of tetracycline plant stress via antibiotrophy.

The reuse of water using effluents containing antibiotics from anthropogenic activities has been mainly linked to the development of antibiotic resistance. However, we report that the development of bacterial tolerance promotes plant growth. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the efficiency of inoculation of a new antibiotic-degrading bacterium, Erwinia strain S9, in augmenting the tolerance of pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants to tetracycline (TET) (10 and 20 mg/L). Physiological parameters such as tissue elongation and biomass, as well as relative water content, were remarkably lower in

Effects of plants on the removal of hexavalent chromium in wetland sediments.

The effect of two wetland plants, Typha latifolia L. (cattail) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud (common reed), on the fate of Cr(VI) in wetland sediments was investigated using greenhouse bench-scale microcosm experiments. The removal of Cr(VI) was monitored based on the vertical profiles of aqueous Cr(VI) in the sediments. The Cr(VI) removal rates were estimated taking into account plant transpiration, which was found to significantly concentrate dissolved species in the sediments. After correcting for evapotranspiration, the actual Cr(VI) removal rates were significantly higher

Hydrogen sulfide persulfidates OAS-A1 to balance cysteine levels in regulating Arabidopsis stomatal development.

Plants regulate photosynthesis and transpiration primarily by adjusting the stomatal aperture and density to adapt to environmental changes. O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase (OAS-TL) maintains a balance between cysteine (Cys) and sulfide metabolism. Here, we report that OAS-TL plays a critical role in stomatal development in Arabidopsis thaliana. Mutations in the OAS-TL family member gene OAS-A1 reduce Cys synthesis, leading to increased stomatal density and reduced plant drought tolerance. Moreover, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) enhances the enzymatic activity of OAS-A1 by persulfidating the Cys28 and Cys

Adapting Crops to Rising Temperatures: Understanding Heat Stress and Plant Resilience Mechanisms.

Global temperature rise has become a critical challenge to agricultural sustainability, severely affecting crop growth, productivity, and survival. Human-induced climate change and greenhouse gas emissions cause heat stress, disrupting plant metabolism and physiology at all developmental stages from germination to harvest. Elevated temperatures during germination impair water uptake, enzyme activity, and energy metabolism, leading to poor or uneven seedling emergence. At key phases such as flowering and grain filling, heat stress limits photosynthesis and transpiration by inducing stomatal clo

Nitrate and ammonium proportion plays a key role in copper phytoextraction, improving the antioxidant defense in Tanzania guinea grass.

Various nitrate and ammonium proportions (NO3-/NH4+) in the growth media can increase metal phytoextraction compared to supplying solely NO3-. However, there are no studies showing these effects in plants under copper (Cu) contamination as well as their consequences in plant stress tolerance. The objective was to evaluate the effect of NO3-/NH4+ proportions in Cu phytoextraction by Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania and its consequence in the oxidative stress, photosynthesis, and antioxidant system under Cu stress. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design, by using a 3 ×
