In vitro antihelmintic effect of fifteen tropical plant extracts on excysted flukes of Fasciola hepatica.

BACKGROUND: Fasciolosis due to Fasciola hepatica is the most important hepatic disease in veterinary medicine. Its relevance is important because of the major economical losses to the cattle industry such as: reduction in milk, meat and wool production; miscarriages, anemia, liver condemnation and occasionally deaths, are estimated in billons of dollars. The emergence of fluke resistance due to over or under dosing of fasciolides as well as environmental damage produced by the chemicals eliminated in field have stimulated the need for alternative methods to control Fasciola hepatica. The aim o

Phospholipid packing defects and oxysterols in atherosclerosis: Dietary prevention and the French paradox.

The research literature on atherosclerosis includes findings investigating the atherosclerotic effect of oxysterols, which are the oxidation products of cholesterol; and the literature on oxysterols refers to mechanisms by which oxysterols cause phospholipid packing defects in cell membranes. This review synthesizes these two bodies of research findings to describe how oxysterols cause phospholipid packing defects within the membranes of vascular endothelial cells, potentially increasing cell permeability of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol which may lead to atheroma formation. Exogenous so

Artichoke and milk thistle pills and syrups as sources of phenolic compounds with antimicrobial activity.

Dietary supplements based on hepatoprotective plants have been increasingly used in the prevention of liver injuries. In the present work, the aim was to study the phenolic profile and possibly relate it to the in vitro antimicrobial activity of two different formulations (pills and syrups) of artichoke and milk thistle, the antioxidant and anti-hepatocellular carcinoma activities of which were previously reported by our research group. The phenolic profiles were obtained by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS, and the antimicrobial activity evaluation was performed with the clinical isolates of multiresistant ba

Design, optimization, and in vitro antimicrobial evaluation of a clove leaf oil nanoemulsion against bovine mastitis-associated pathogens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bovine mastitis is one of the most economically significant diseases affecting dairy cattle, leading to substantial losses due to decreased milk yield, higher treatment costs, and lower milk quality. Iodine-based teat disinfectants are commonly used to prevent mastitis but have several limitations, such as milk residue contamination, potential skin irritation, environmental persistence, and concerns about antimicrobial resistance. Plant-derived antimicrobials have thus gained interest as potential alternatives. Clove leaf oil from Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry

Potential Use of Hazelnut Beverage in Water Kefir Fermentation: Effects of Sugar Addition on Physicochemical, Microbiological, Rheological, Bioactive, Volatile, and Allergenic Properties.

This study investigated the potential of hazelnut beverage, obtained from hazelnut cake through high-pressure homogenization (100 MPa), for use in water kefir production. The effects of different sugar concentrations (2.5%, 5%, and 7.5%) on product properties and hazelnut allergenicity were also examined. Sugar addition significantly stimulated microbial growth, resulting in significant increases in Lactobacilli, Lactococci, acetic acid bacteria, and yeast counts compared to the control sample. At the end of fermentation, the pH values of all samples (4.32-4.54) were found to be below the food

Disentangling a complex nationwide Salmonella Dublin outbreak associated with raw-milk cheese consumption, France, 2015 to 2016.

On 18 January 2016, the French National Reference Centre for Salmonella reported to Santé publique France an excess of Salmonella enterica serotype Dublin (S. Dublin) infections. We investigated to identify the source of infection and implement control measures. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) and multilocus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) were performed to identify microbiological clusters and links among cases, animal and food sources. Clusters were defined as isolates with less than 15 single nucleotide polymorphisms determined by WGS and/or with identical MLVA pattern. We compa

Five Conserved microRNAs Dominate the Small-RNA Pool of Three Arid-Zone Camel-Forage Plants: De Novo Repertoires and a Species-Matched Test of Cross-Kingdom Targeting in the Dromedary.

Background: Camel husbandry underpins food security in drylands, and dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) milk is valued as a functional food whose composition is thought to be shaped by the desert forage that camels browse. Dietary plant microRNAs (miRNAs) have been proposed as one molecular route linking diet to mammalian physiology, and two interactions are widely cited from experimental reports: rice miR168a repressing LDLRAP1 and plant miR159 repressing TCF7. The hypothesis remains contested, however, and it has not been tested for camel forage against camel transcripts. Methods: We generated

Antimicrobial Efficacy of Allium cepa and Zingiber officinale Against the Milk-Borne Pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is an important food-borne pathogen that causes listeriosis and has a high case fatality rate despite its low incidence. Medicinal plants and their secondary metabolites have been identified as potential antibacterial substances, serving as replacements for synthetic chemical compounds. The present studies emphasize two significant medicinal plants, Allium cepa and Zingiber officinale, and their efficacy against L. monocytogenes. Firstly, a bacterial isolate was obtained from milk and identified through morphology and biochemical reactions. The species of the isolate wer

IgA Targeting in the Infant Gut Is Modulated by Diet and Increasingly Directed Towards Persistent Species.

BACKGROUND: IgA is the dominant antibody in the human gut and a key regulator of host-microbe interactions. Infants begin to produce IgA at around 6 months old and receive large quantities of IgA via human milk, but technical limitations have prevented species-level characterization of IgA binding in early life. This has left basic knowledge gaps about which species are targeted by IgA in infancy, and how modifiable lifestyle factors like breastfeeding and complementary feeding impact IgA targeting. RESULTS: Here we adapt Metagenomic Immunoglobulin Sequencing (MIg-Seq) for low-biomass infant

Techno-functional changes in proteins from plant-based agro-industrial by-products induced by enzymatic hydrolysis: a review.

This review explores the potential of plant-based agro-industrial by-products as sustainable protein sources. It examines how enzymatic hydrolysis can modify and enhance their techno-functional properties for food applications. A literature search (2020-2025) in major databases identified experimental studies using protein-rich by-products (≥10 g/100 g protein) processed into protein ingredients, concentrates, isolates, and, especially, hydrolysates. These by-products generally exhibit favorable amino acid profiles and notable bioactive properties, including antioxidant and enzyme-inhibitory a

Fabrication of soy protein - pea protein composite fibril/κ-carrageenan emulsion gels through thermal fibrillation for application as fat replacers in ice cream.

Growing interest in reduced-fat frozen desserts has created a need for plant-based fat replacers capable of reproducing the structural and sensory functions of milk fat. In this study, soy protein isolate (SPI) and pea protein isolate (PPI) were co-fibrillated by acid-heat treatment to produce composite protein fibrils (SPI/PPI-F), which were then combined with κ-carrageenan (KG) to construct emulsion gels. SPI/PPI-F exhibited a total β-sheet content of 60.49% and, among the fibrillar emulsifier systems tested, produced an emulsion with a near-zero creaming index. These results indicated that

Seasonal content of heavy metals in the "soil-feed-milk-manure" system in horse husbandry in Kazakhstan.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The quality of food, especially animal-based food, is crucial for human health. However, the quality of milk and other animal products has become an acute cause for concern in Kazakhstan. Technogenic dispersion of heavy metals (HMs) causes adverse effects on living organisms and creates unfavorable conditions for the existence of humans, animals, and plants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of several HMs in samples of soil, horse feed (hay, mixed feed, and bran), mare's milk, and manure to assess bioaccumulation and possible adverse effects on the bodie

Recent advancements in phytotherapeutics for controlling babesiosis and theileriosis.

Babesiosis/theileriosis is a tick-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia and Theileria. Tick species of genera, such as Ixodes, Rhipicephalus, Haemaphysalis and Hyalomma, transmit these parasites. These diseases threaten livestock productivity and health, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. These diseases have a significant economic impact due to reduced milk and meat production, reproductive losses, higher veterinary expenses, and, in extreme cases, animal mortality. Even after decades of research, piroplasmosis is still difficult to control and manage. T

Characterization of decolorized Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein foaming solution and its application in foam coffee.

Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein (CPP) possesses superior emulsification and foaming capabilities, enabling its solution to replace milk as a foaming agent in coffee products. However, its application, is constrained by the obvious pigmentation and suboptimal foam stability. To achieve this goal, ethanol decolorization and saponin (Tea saponin (Ts), Gypenoside (Gyp)) complexation were employed to prepare decolorized Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein (DCPP) foaming solution. The interfacial properties, rheological properties, and foam properties were characterized. Initially, compared with the CPP sol

Risk perception regarding implementation of iodine thyroid blocking during a nuclear disaster of mothers living near a nuclear power station in Japan.

Pre-emptive evacuation orders following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) in March 2011 and subsequent regulatory limits regarding contaminated food, milk, and water minimized the external and internal radiation exposure doses of nearby residents. However, with regard to implementation of iodine thyroid blocking (ITB), residents were confused because no information on the matter was released by the central and/or local governments. Based on lessons learned from the FDNPS accident, many countries have revised their guidelines regarding ITB during nuclear disast
