Many aquatic snails act as intermediate hosts for the larvae of trematodes, Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, which cause the diseases fascioliasis and schistosomiasis. The WHO has tested several thousands of synthetic compounds for the control of the snail host. Although effective, these molluscicides have so far not proved themselves to be entirely satisfactory. With a growing awareness of environmental pollution, efforts are being made to discover molluscicidal products of plant origin. Being products of biosynthesis, these are potentially biodegradable in nature. Several groups of

Methanolic extracts obtained from different organs of Cleome rosea, collected from its natural habitat and from in vitro-propagated plants, were submitted to in vitro biological assays. Inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production by J774 macrophages and antioxidant effects by protecting the plasmid DNA from the SnCl(2)-induced damage were evaluated. Extracts from the stem of both origins and leaf of natural plants inhibited NO production. The plasmid DNA strand breaks induced by SnCl(2) were reduced by extracts from either leaf or stem of both sources. On the other hand, root extracts did not s

Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) are a class of structurally diverse secondary metabolites, with over 2,500 identified variants classified into seven major categories based on their core skeletons. These compounds exhibit significant pharmacological activities - including antitumor, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects - and serve as important sources of clinical drugs such as morphine, berberine, and magnoflorine. Currently, BIAs are primarily obtained through plant cultivation and extraction. However, factors such as low in-planta content, seasonal constraints, and environmental v

Senolytic and senomorphic therapies have gained more and more attention in the last decade. This kind of therapy is based on the killing of cellular senescent cells without harming the "normal" cells. Aging is not a disease. Clinical studies on healthy people will be difficult to conduct. Therefore, one possibility is to draw on the large repertoire of medicinal plants and use their senolytic properties to provide mild anti-aging therapies. Chamomile, goldenrod, reishi, and green tea were tested for their ability to trigger senolysis. Quercetin was used as control substance. Cellular senescenc
