Fate of Food-Relevant Toxic Plant Alkaloids during Food Processing or Storing and Analytical Strategies to Unveil Potential Transformation Products.

Toxic plant alkaloids (TPAs) may contaminate food and pose a threat to consumer health; as a consequence, they are undesired in foodstuff or food commodities. Similar to other ingredients, TPA may be affected by storing or processing of food, often associated with decreased levels of the parent alkaloids. Up to now, little is known about potential transformation products or if they still may exhibit toxic potential to consumers. This perspective briefly summarizes the current knowledge regarding the behavior of opium, pyrrolizidine, and tropane alkaloids toward processing or storing and highli

Co-Toxicity Factor Analysis Reveals Numerous Plant Essential Oils Are Synergists of Natural Pyrethrins against Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes.

With insecticide-resistant mosquito populations becoming an ever-growing concern, new vector control technologies are needed. With the lack of new chemical classes of insecticides to control mosquito populations, the development of novel synergists may improve the performance of available insecticides. We screened a set of 20 plant essential oils alone and in combination with natural pyrethrins against Aedes aegypti (Orlando) female adult mosquitoes to assess their ability to synergize this natural insecticide. A co-toxicity factor analysis was used to identify whether plant oils modulated the

Bioassay directed identification of toxicants in sludge and related reused materials from industrial wastewater treatment plants in the Yangtze River Delta.

Industrialized development of the Yangtze River Delta, China, has resulted in larger amounts of wastes, including sludges from treatment of these wastes. Methods to manage and dispose, including reuse were urgently needed. Sludge and reused products were collected from two largest factories, KEYUAN and HENGJIA where treated sludges were turned into bricks or sludge cake to be placed in landfills, respectively. Metals and organic compounds were quantified in sludges and leachates assessed by use of toxicity characterized leaching procedure (TCLP) while acute toxicity was determined by Daphnia m

Adaptive resistance to and intracellular bioaccumulation of potentially toxic metals in a plant growth-promoting Rhizobium tropici-like isolate: implications for phytoremediation.

The accumulation of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) poses a threat to the cellular integrity of soil microorganisms as well as ecological stability, driving the selection of resistant microorganisms with biotechnological potential. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of the Rhizobium sp. LBMP-C04 isolate under PTM stress, focusing on adaptive resistance mechanisms and intracellular bioaccumulation. The bacterium, which was isolated from Arachis pintoi root nodules and had previously undergone genomic characterization, was subjected to antibiotic-resistance assays, growth-curve analysis i

Mechanisms of toxicity and stress tolerance in aquatic plants under combined exposure to pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and eutrophication: A meta-analysis.

Given the increasing co-occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and eutrophication in aquatic environments, it is crucial to understand PPCP-nutrient-plant interactions and their combined ecological impact. However, the literature regarding quantitative thresholds and metabolic trade-offs remain highly fragmented. In this meta-analysis, we compiled a dataset comprising 407 observations from 38 rigorously screened studies, covering various PPCP classes and floating, submerged, and emergent plant habitats. Remediation efficiency and physiological stress markers specifica

Exploring the role of Arthrospira platensis and earthworms (Lumbricus castaneus) biosystem in mitigating antimony toxicity and enhancing the biochemical properties of cucurbit plants.

The rising industrial use of antimony (Sb) has led to its widespread pollution, negatively impacting plant growth as an emerging pollutant. Limited studies have explored the integrated biosystems involving Arthrospira platensis (AP) and/or earthworms (EW) on cucurbit plants under Sb-stress. This study uncovered the toxicity of three levels of 'Sb' on soil characters and biochemical changes of cucurbit leaves with/without EW and/or AP. The GC-mass analysis of AP-extract documented the presence of 33 bioactive compounds; including 11,13-dimethyl-12-tetradecen-1-ol acetate, lanostane-7,11-dione,

Wastewater toxicity removal: Integrated chemical and effect-based monitoring of full-scale conventional activated sludge and membrane bioreactor plants.

The literature is currently lacking effect-based monitoring studies targeted at evaluating the performance of full-scale membrane bioreactor plants. In this research, a monitoring campaign was performed at a full-scale wastewater treatment facility with two parallel lines (traditional activated sludge and membrane bioreactor). Beside the standard parameters (COD, nitrogen, phosphorus, and metals), 6 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, 29 insecticides, 2 herbicides, and 3 endocrine disrupting compounds were measured. A multi-tiered battery of bioassays complemented the investigation, targeting d

Anti-5'-Nucleotidases (5'-ND) and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) Activities of Medicinal Plants to Combat Echis carinatus Venom-Induced Toxicities.

Echis carinatus is one of the highly venomous snakes of Pakistan that is responsible for numerous cases of envenomation and deaths. In Pakistan, medicinal plants are commonly used traditionally for snakebite treatment because of their low cost and easy availability in comparison with antivenom. The current research is aimed at evaluating the inhibitory activity of Pakistani medicinal plants against acetylcholinesterase and 5'-nucleotidases present in Echis carinatus venom. Acetylcholinesterase and 5'-nucleotidase enzymatic assays were performed at different venom concentrations to check the ac

Silicon is dependent on hydrogen sulphide to improve boron toxicity tolerance in pepper plants by regulating the AsA-GSH cycle and glyoxalase system.

The role of endogenous hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in silicon-induced improvement in boron toxicity (BT) tolerance in pepper plants was studied. Two-week old seedlings were subjected to control (0.05 mM B) or 2.0 mM BT in a nutrient solution. These two treatments were combined with 2.0 mM Si. BT caused considerable reduction in biomass, chlorophyll a &b, photosystem II maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm), glutathione and ascorbate in the pepper seedlings. However, it enhanced malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte leakage, proline, H2S, and activities of catalase, superoxide dismu

Role of Azospirillum brasilense in triggering different Fe chelate reductase enzymes in cucumber plants subjected to both nutrient deficiency and toxicity.

Azospirillum brasilense was reported to up-regulate iron (Fe) uptake mechanisms, such as Fe reduction and rhizosphere acidification, in both Fe sufficient and deficient cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). Strategy I plants take up both Fe and copper (Cu) after their reduction mediated by the ferric-chelate reductase oxidase (FRO) enzyme. Interestingly, in cucumber genome only one FRO gene is reported. Thus, in the present study we applied a bioinformatics approach to identify the member of cucumber FRO gene family and allowed the identification of at least three CsFRO genes, one of which was

Engineered Iron/Iron Oxide Functionalized Membranes for Selenium and Other Toxic Metal Removal from Power Plant Scrubber Water.

The remediation of toxic metals from water with high concentrations of salt has been an emerging area for membrane separation. Cost-effective nanomaterials such as iron and iron oxide nanoparticles have been widely used in reductive and oxidative degradation of toxic organics. Similar procedures can be used for redox transformations of metal species (e.g. metal oxyanions to elemental metal), and/or adsorption of species on iron oxide surface. In this study, iron-functionalized membranes were developed for reduction and adsorption of selenium from coal-fired power plant scrubber water. Iron-fun

Effects of nanomolar copper on water plants--comparison of biochemical and biophysical mechanisms of deficiency and sublethal toxicity under environmentally relevant conditions.

Toxicity and deficiency of essential trace elements like Cu are major global problems. Here, environmentally relevant sub-micromolar concentrations of Cu (supplied as CuSO4) and simulations of natural light- and temperature cycles were applied to the aquatic macrophyte Ceratophyllum demersum. Growth was optimal at 10nM Cu, while PSII activity (Fv/Fm) was maximal around 2 nM Cu. Damage to the PSII reaction centre was the first target of Cu toxicity, followed by disturbed regulation of heat dissipation (NPQ). Only after that, electron transport through PSII (ΦPSII) was inhibited, and finally chl

Acute and chronic liver toxicity resulting from exposure to chlorinated naphthalenes at a cable manufacturing plant during World War II.

Historical records were used to reconstruct an outbreak of chlorance and acute liver toxicity due to chlorinated naphthalene exposure at a New York State plant which manufactured "Navy cables" during World War II. A cohort mortality study was conducted of the population (n = 9,028) employed at the plant from 1940 to 1944. Vital status was followed through December 31, 1985. The study found an excess of deaths from cirrhosis of the liver [observed (OBS) = 150; standardized mortality ratio (SMR) = 1.84; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.56-2.16]; cirrhosis deaths were elevated to a similar degree

Differences in gene expression and genetic variation underlying preference-performance mismatches: insights from a specialized native herbivore on an invasive toxic plant.

Specialist phytophagous insects have a narrow hostplant range for optimal development and survival. Mismatches between female oviposition preference and larval performance can lead to high fitness costs. Understanding the mechanistic basis of this decoupling can help us understand evolutionary constraints and aid in predicting outcomes of error-prone oviposition. We investigated the causes for preference-performance mismatches in a specialist native herbivore laying eggs on an invasive toxic plant. Transcriptomic analyses revealed host-plant-specific gene expression signatures in larvae feedin

Migration, accumulation, and risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in soil-plant (shrub and herbage) systems at typical polymetallic mines in Northwest China.

In grassland systems of the semi-arid mining area, the migration, accumulation, and bioavailability of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are important ecological and health risk issues. Thirty-eight pairs of topsoil (0-20 cm) and plant samples were collected around Baiyin City and in Dongdagou stream valley to investigate the migration of PTEs in soils, transfer of PTEs in soil-plant (shrub and herbage) systems, and assess the risk in soils and plants. The total concentrations of PTE (Hg, As, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) were analyzed following digestion in mixture acid solution, and bioavailable PTE w

Taurine modulates dynamics of oxidative defense, secondary metabolism, and nutrient relation to mitigate boron and chromium toxicity in Triticum aestivum L. plants.

The present study was undertaken to appraise the efficacy of exogenous taurine in alleviating boron (B) and chromium (Cr) toxicity. Taurine protects cell membranes from lipid peroxidation due to its function as a ROS scavenger. However, there exists no report in the literature on the role of taurine in plants under abiotic stresses. The present investigation indicated the involvement of exogenous taurine in mediating plant defense responses under B and Cr toxicity. Wheat plants manifested a significant drop in growth, chlorophyll molecules, SPAD values, relative water content, nitrate reductas

A natural agonist of mosquito TRPA1 from the medicinal plant Cinnamosma fragrans that is toxic, antifeedant, and repellent to the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Plants produce various secondary metabolites that offer a potential source of novel insecticides and repellents for the control of mosquito vectors. Plants of the genus Cinnamosma are endemic to, and widely-distributed throughout, the island of Madagascar. The barks of these species are commonly used in traditional medicines for treating a wide range of maladies. The therapeutic nature of the bark is thought to be associated with its enrichment of pungent drimane sesquiterpenes, which elicit antifeedant and toxic effects in some insects. Here we test the hypothesis that a bark extract of Cinna
