Effects of 6-Week Weighted-Jump-Squat Training With and Without Eccentric Load Reduction on Explosive Performance.

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of 6-week barbell weighted-jump-squat (WJS) training with and without eccentric load reduction on explosive performance. METHODS: Twenty well-trained male athletes were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 10) or a control group (n = 10). Participants completed 12 WJS training sessions (6 sets of 5 repetitions of barbell back squat at 30% of 1-repetition maximum [1RM]) twice a week over a 6-week period. While the control group used 0% eccentric loading (ie, traditional WJS), the experimental group utilized a 50% eccentric loading reduction wit

Biomechanics of step-off drop landings are affected by limb dominance and lead limb in task initiation.

This study examines the effects of limb dominance and lead limb in task initiation on the kinetics and kinematics of step-off drop landings. Nineteen male participants performed drop landings led by the dominant and non-dominant limbs at 45-cm and 60-cm drop heights. Ground reaction force (GRF) and lower body kinematic data were collected. Between-limb time differences at the initial ground contact were calculated to indicate temporal asymmetry. Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) was applied for waveform analysis while two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used for discrete parameters. SPM res

Effects of plyometric training on measures of physical fitness in racket sport athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, the popularity of racket sports has surged. Plyometric training (PT) has been the focus of extensive research because of the proven benefits it provides to athletes. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews and meta-analyses specifically evaluating the impact of PT on physical fitness metrics in racket sport athletes. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive review and analysis of evidence derived from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effects of PT on measures of physical fitness among racket sports athletes. METHODS: The electroni

Neuromuscular Strategies in Stretch-Shortening Exercises with Increasing Drop Heights: The Role of Muscle Coactivation in Leg Stiffness and Power Propulsion.

When applying drop jump exercises, knowing the magnitude of the stimulus is fundamental to stabilize the leg joints and to generate movements with the highest power. The effects of different drop heights on leg muscles coactivation, leg stiffness and power propulsion were investigated in fifteen sport science students. Drop jumps from heights of 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 cm in a random order were performed on a force platform. During each drop jump, the ground reaction force, knee angle displacement, and synchronized surface-electromyography root-mean-square (sEMGRMS) activity (vastus lateralis,

Longitudinal changes in bone mineral density in male master cyclists and nonathletes.

This study tracked changes in bone mineral density (BMD) over a 7-year period in competitive male master cyclists (n = 19) and nonathletes (n = 18). Participants completed health/exercise history and food frequency (for calcium intake) questionnaires and underwent BMD testing by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. At initial and 7-year assessments, there was a consistent pattern of lower BMD in cyclists compared to nonathletes at all bone sites measured. Repeated measures analysis of covariance adjusted for changes in body mass index, lean mass, calcium intake, and exercise habits indicated a si

Effects of an eight-week French contrast training program on lower-limb explosive power, acceleration, and muscle strength in male college badminton players.

BACKGROUND: Badminton is a high-intensity sport that demands lower-limb athletic performance. French Contrast Training (FCT), which combines heavy compound exercises, plyometrics, light to moderate loads, and assisted plyometric movements in one session, has been suggested to enhance neuromuscular adaptations more effectively. However, the efficacy of FCT on lower-limb explosive power, acceleration, and muscle strength compared to equal-load training (ELT) in badminton players remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the effects of an eight-week FCT program on lower-limb exp

Post-exercise consumption of milk or Greek yogurt may support the anti-inflammatory environment following high-intensity exercise.

INTRODUCTION: Following exercise, there is a transient increase in circulating inflammatory mediators (e.g., cytokines). This acute inflammatory response may be modulated by post-exercise nutrition. Dairy products contain many anti-inflammatory constituents that may favourably modulate exercise-induced inflammation. This study aimed to investigate how different post-exercise nutrition strategies [milk, Greek yogurt [GY], carbohydrate [CHO], or water [no nutrition]] modulate the exercise-induced inflammatory response. METHODS: Twenty healthy recreationally active adults (12/8 F/M; age=23 ± 4.0

A Comparison of Single Leg Countermovement Jump Techniques on Jump Performance: Considerations for Test Standardization.

Staton, AE, Fahey, J, and Jones, PA. A comparison of single leg countermovement jump techniques on jump performance: considerations for test standardization. J Strength Cond Res 40(6): 650-662, 2026-Single leg countermovement jump (SLCMJ) testing is widely used in both sport performance and rehabilitation contexts. However, several inconsistent protocols and various jump techniques have been used across literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate 4 variations of the SLCMJ (A: 90° hip and knee flexion, B: 90° knee bend, C: straight limb, D: unrestricted limb), examining the rel

Fat-free mass mediates the association between body mass and jump height in healthy young adults.

BACKGROUND: The countermovement jump (CMJ) is a reliable and valid test of lower-extremity (LE) muscle power and neuromuscular performance. Body mass is positively associated with CMJ performance in young adults, warranting the examination of the influence of body composition on jump height (JH). This study examined the mediation effects of body composition on CMJ performance in young adults. The hypothesis was that fat-free mass and percent fat mass would significantly mediate the association between body mass with JH in young adults. METHODS: Healthy young adults (N.=81; 47 female; mean age

Gender differences in residual effect of prior drop jumps on oxygen uptake during heavy cycling exercise.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Unaccustomed eccentric or eccentric-concentric exercise leaves us stiff and sore the next day and can cause muscle damage. The data about the residual effect of prior eccentric-concentric exercises on oxygen uptake (VO2) during constant cycling exercise in women or the data about differences of such effect between genders are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess differences of the residual effect of PDJ on VO2 during HCE and indirect muscle damage parameters between women and men. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study aimed to asses differences of the re

What is resistance exercise? A review of current uses and potential ways forward.

The resistance exercise (RE) literature highlights the importance and impact of RE in sports performance, daily life, and clinical outcomes. While RE research dates back to the 19th century, current definitions of what constitutes RE are varied and give rise to questions about the requisites of RE. For example, some definitions refer to movements or muscle contractions against external resistance whereas others consider all repeated actions against one’s bodyweight. Taken to the limit, this could introduce confusion between RE and endurance exercise, for example. Without a clear definition, sy

Accentuated Eccentric Loading Increases Maximal Countermovement Jump Height Without Changes in Overall Lower Limb Kinetics and Energetics.

This study aimed to determine the mechanical and energetic responses to accentuated eccentric loading (AEL) during maximal countermovement jumps (CMJ) and examined potential mechanisms underlying performance enhancement relative to bodyweight CMJs. We hypothesized that increased lower limb forces during loading would enhance positive work output during push-off. Fifteen recreationally active men with good jumping ability (22.3 ± 4.5 years, 1.85 ± 0.06 m, and 79.1 ± 9.6 kg) performed maximal CMJ with and without AEL using handheld dumbbells equivalent to 20% body mass.
