BACKGROUND: Influenza virus and pneumococcal infections are associated with serious health risks resulting from complications. Vaccinations are an effective method of preventing them. Pharmacists can play an essential role in promoting and administering vaccines. High vaccination rates among pharmacists could increase their credibility as vaccination advocates. The review aims to discuss the influenza and pneumococcal vaccination coverage among pharmacists and factors influencing the willingness to vaccinate.
METHODS: The systematic review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines across t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Single-study evidence of separate and combined effectiveness of influenza and pneumococcal vaccination in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is limited. To fill this gap, we studied the effectiveness of trivalent seasonal influenza vaccine (TIV) and 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), separately and together, at preventing adverse COPD outcomes.
METHODS: Our study used a self-controlled, before-and-after cohort design to assess the effectiveness of TIV and PPSV23 in COPD patients. Patients were recruited from hospitals in T

Postlicensure surveillance of pneumonia incidence can be used to estimate whether pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) affect incidence. We used Poisson regression models that control for baseline seasonality to determine the impact of PCVs and the possible effects of variations in virus activity in Israel on these surveillance estimates. PCV was associated with significant declines in radiologically confirmed alveolar pneumonia (RCAP) among patients <6 months, 6-17 months, and 18-35 months of age (-31% [95% CI -51% to -15%], -41% [95% CI -52 to -32%], and -34% [95% CI -42% to -25%], respect

PURPOSE: Previous studies have demonstrated the immunogenicity and safety of the co-administration of the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV3) with the polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPV) or pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). However, there is no direct comparison study that evaluates the immunogenicity and safety of IIV3 given concomitantly with PCV13 or PPV23 in the elderly.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the 2012-2013 influenza vaccination period, 224 healthy elderly volunteers aged 65 years and older randomly received IIV3 given concomitantly with either PCV13 (PCV13+IIV

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) effectively prevent pneumococcal disease, but the global impact of pneumococcal vaccination is hampered by its cost. The evaluation of reduced dose schedules of PCV includes measurement of effects on immunogenicity and carriage acquisition compared to standard schedules. The relevance and feasibility of trials of reduced dose schedules is greatest in middle- and low-income countries, such as The Gambia, where the introduction of PCV resulted in good disease control but where transmission of vaccine-type pneumococci persists. We designed a larg

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Pneumococcal vaccination is part of the South African pediatric public immunization program but the potential cost-effectiveness of such an intervention for adults is unknown. This study aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness of two widely used pneumococcal vaccines: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) in South African adults, 18 years and older. Four analyses were carried out in a) both the private and public health care sectors; and b) for the HI

There is growing concern that interventions that alter microbial ecology can adversely affect health. We characterised the impact of the seven-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) on pneumococcal carriage and the bacterial component of the nasopharyngeal microbiome during infancy. Newborns were recruited into three groups as follows: Group1 (n = 33) was the control group and comprised infants who received PCV7 after 6 months and came from unvaccinated communities. Group 2 (n = 30) came from unvaccinated communities and Group 3 (n = 39) came from vaccinated communities. Both group 2 and

Anaphylaxis to pneumococcal vaccines is rare. In the only one child with anaphylaxis to a first injection of the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine that has been explored, skin tests and specific IgE determination diagnosed immediate-type hypersensitivity to pneumococcal antigens. We report the case of a child who tolerated three injections of the 7-valent pneumococcal vaccine, but experienced anaphylaxis to a fourth injection of the 23-valent vaccine. Immediate responses in skin tests diagnosed immediate-type hypersensitivity to the two vaccines. Immunizations with the 7-valent pneumococcal vacci

The clinical and microbiological characteristics of pneumococcal pneumonia in children hospitalized in Lima were analyzed, before and after the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV). We reviewed cases that occurred between 2006-2019, in the pre-PCV7 (2006-2008), post-PCV7 (2009-2011) and post-PCV13 (2016-2019) periods. Of 128 patients with positive cultures (92 blood and 36 pleural fluid), most were infants in the pre-PCV7 (77.1%) and post-PCV7 (43.3%) studies, while in the post-PCV13 study they were mostly preschoolers (62%). We found an increase in complicated pneumonia cases

The worldwide implementation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in children has reduced the overall pneumococcal disease burden. Two PCVs are widely available for infant vaccination: the pneumococcal non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV) and the 13-valent PCV (PCV13). While these PCVs differ in serotype composition (PCV13 includes polysaccharides of serotypes 3, 6A and 19A; PHiD-CV does not), their impact on the overall pneumococcal disease burden in children is comparable. This commentary summarizes the evidence of comparability between PHiD-CV and P

INTRODUCTION: The widespread implementation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) into pediatric national immunization programs (NIPs) across Latin American countries has substantially reduced pneumococcal disease burden. While the 10-valent (PCV10) and 13-valent (PCV13) vaccines have reduced morbidity and mortality, disease caused by serotypes not included in these vaccines persists. The 15-valent (PCV15) and 20-valent (PCV20) vaccines are now available in the region. This study aimed to estimate the clinical, economic, and societal burden attributable to serotypes contained in PCV10, PCV

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines covering 10 (PCV10) and 13 (PCV13) serotypes have been introduced in the infant immunization schedule of most European countries in 2010-11. To provide additional real-life data, we measured the effectiveness of PCV10 and PCV13 against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children of 12 European sites (SpIDnet).
METHODS: We compared the vaccination status of PCV10 and PCV13 serotype IPD (cases) to that of nonPCV13 serotype IPD (controls) reported in 2012-2018. We calculated pooled effectiveness as (1-vaccination odds ratio)*100, and measured effec

OBJECTIVES: Pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage occurs early in life. However, the role of vertical transmission is not well understood. The aims of this study were to describe carriage among mothers and their newborns, and to assess for risk factors for neonatal carriage.
METHODS: In a nested retrospective cohort study, we analysed data from the control arm of a randomized controlled trial conducted in The Gambia 2 to 3 years after introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) 13. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from 374 women and their newborns on the day of delivery, then 3, 6,

BACKGROUND: : Since the introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in the United States, the need for additional serotype coverage has become clear. Our objective was to assess the potential serotype coverage of PCV7 and of the 2 experimental conjugate vaccines, 10-valent (PCV10) and 13-valent (PCV13), against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), acute otitis media (AOM), acute conjunctivitis (AC), and pneumococcal carriage in southern Israel, where PCV7 had not yet been introduced at the time of the study.
METHODS: : Data on isolates were obtained prospectively from c

BACKGROUND: Mucosal immune mechanisms in the upper and lower respiratory tracts may serve a critical role in preventing pneumonia due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Streptococcus pneumoniae-specific plasmablasts presumably originating in the lower respiratory tract have recently been found in the circulation in patients with pneumonia. The localization of an immune response can be evaluated by exploring homing receptors on such plasmablasts, yet no data have thus far described homing receptors in pneumonia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pneumococcal vaccination may attenuate the severity of pneumococcal pneumonia even in breakthrough infections. However, evidence on this effect stratified by clinical severity is scarce. The objective was to evaluate whether vaccination reduces poor outcomes in patients hospitalized for pneumococcal pneumonia, specifically according to CURB-65 severity.
METHODS: Retrospective observational study of 90 adults with microbiologically confirmed pneumococcal pneumonia (January 2020-December 2024). Poor outcome was defined as death or ICU admission. Propensity score matchi

Streptococcus pneumoniae, the main cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), also leads to exacerbations, hospitalizations, and mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure (CHF). The risk of CAP is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), and the risk of invasive pneumococcal disease is increased in HIV-infected patients. Pneumococcal vaccination is recommended for these patients in France. The objective was a large survey of pneumococcal vaccination coverage (PVC) by general practitioners (GPs) in these patients in France. Diagnosis and

BACKGROUND: Because Bangladesh intended to introduce pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)-10 in 2015, we examined the baseline burden of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) to measure impact of PCV.
METHODS: During 2007-2013, we performed blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures in children <5 years old with suspected IPD identified through active surveillance at 4 hospitals. Isolates were serotyped by quellung and tested for antibiotic susceptibility by disc diffusion and E-test. Serotyping of culture-negative cases, detected by Binax or polymerase chain reaction, was done by sequential multip

BACKGROUND: The impact of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) at the population level is unclear. We explored PCV13's effect in reducing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD)-related morbidity and mortality, and whether serotype-specific changes were attributable to vaccination or expected as a part of natural, cyclical variations.
METHODS: This was a Danish nationwide population-based cohort study based on the linkage of laboratory surveillance data and the Danish Civil Registration System. Changes in IPD incidence and mortality during baseline (2000-2007), 7-valent pneumococc
