A simulation study of the performance of statistical models for count outcomes with excessive zeros.

BACKGROUND: Outcome measures that are count variables with excessive zeros are common in health behaviors research. Examples include the number of standard drinks consumed or alcohol-related problems experienced over time. There is a lack of empirical data about the relative performance of prevailing statistical models for assessing the efficacy of interventions when outcomes are zero-inflated, particularly compared with recently developed marginalized count regression approaches for such data. METHODS: The current simulation study examined five commonly used approaches for analyzing count ou

[The manifestations of a scarlatina epidemic process in a large city and their interpretation].

The average morbidity level in scarlet fever for the period of 1972-1990 in Moscow was 230.9 cases per 100,000 of the population and the annual economic damage was 2-2.5 million rubles. The highest morbidity rate values were registered among children attending children's institutions, and in this group among children aged 3-6 years. Cohort and disperse analysis revealed that age-dependent fluctuations of morbidity rate had a regular character and significantly differed. An increase in scarlet fever morbidity was registered simultaneously with elevated levels of morbidity in tonsillitis and acu

Trends in age disparities between younger and middle-age adults among reported rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and infectious syphilis infections in Canada: findings from 1997 to 2007.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to determine trends in age disparities between reported rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and infectious syphilis among younger versus middle-age Canadians. METHODS: We examined age- and sex-specific reported rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and infectious syphilis between 1997 and 2007. Sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates in the younger age group (15-29 years) were compared to the middle-age group (40-59 years) over the 11-year period. We used Poisson regression to examine trends in age-specific (younger:middle-age) rate ratios. RESULTS: Between 1997 and 2007

New parents and mental disorders: a population-based register study.

CONTEXT: Studies on postpartum mental disorders among mothers have primarily focused on either depression or psychoses and have generally not included the broader spectrum of mental disorders. A few studies have found that some men have symptoms of depression after becoming fathers, but these studies have not documented whether this exceeds the morbidity among men in general. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the risk of postpartum mental disorders necessitating hospital admission or outpatient contact for mothers as well as fathers during a 1-year postnatal follow-up period after birth of first live-b

Induction of chromosome aberrations by 4.9 MeV protons in human lymphocytes.

The dose-response relationship and distribution of chromosome aberrations between cells was studied in G0 human peripheral blood lymphocytes following in vitro exposure to 4.9 MeV protons. The dose-response relationship of dicentric yield showed a significant dose-quadratic component and was best expressed by 2.76 X 10(-1) D + 1.36 X 10(-1) D2 (D in Gy). The distribution of dicentrics between cells was over-dispersed compared with a Poisson distribution. Analysis of the data indicated that the over-dispersion was caused by a spatial limitation in the interaction between tracks. The interaction

Renewal Theory as a Universal Quantitative Framework to Characterize Phase Singularity Regeneration in Mammalian Cardiac Fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Despite a century of research, no clear quantitative framework exists to model the fundamental processes responsible for the continuous formation and destruction of phase singularities (PS) in cardiac fibrillation. We hypothesized PS formation/destruction in fibrillation could be modeled as self-regenerating Poisson renewal processes, producing exponential distributions of interevent times governed by constant rate parameters defined by the prevailing properties of each system. METHODS: PS formation/destruction were studied in 5 systems: (1) human persistent atrial fibrillation (n

Maximum likelihood estimation for cytogenetic dose-response curves.

In vitro dose-response curves are used to describe the relation between chromosome aberrations and radiation dose for human lymphocytes. The lymphocytes are exposed to low-LET radiation, and the resulting dicentric chromosome aberrations follow the Poisson distribution. The expected yield depends on both the magnitude and the temporal distribution of the dose. A general dose-response model that describes this relation has been presented by Kellerer and Rossi (1972, Current Topics on Radiation Research Quarterly 8, 85-158; 1978, Radiation Research 75, 471-488) using the theory of dual radiation

Factors associated to Montenegro skin test positivity in Teresina, Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an emerging infectious disease of urban areas in Brazil. To better understand this process, we have studied the association between reaction to the Montenegro skin test (MST), and demographic, socioeconomic and environmental factors in an urban area with high force of transmission. Associations between variables were expressed by prevalence ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals estimated by using Poisson regression models with robust variance. Higher prevalence of positivity to MST was detected among male and older participants, and among subjects

Outdoor air pollution, mortality, and hospital admissions from coronary heart disease in Sheffield, UK: a small-area level ecological study.

AIMS: To examine the hypothesis that coronary heart disease mortality and emergency hospital admission rates are higher in areas with higher outdoor air pollution levels. METHODS AND RESULTS: Modelled nitrogen oxides (NO(x)), particulate matter (PM(10)), and carbon monoxide (CO) levels were interpolated to 1030 census enumeration districts using an ecological study design. Results, based on 6857 deaths and 11,407 admissions from 1994-98 and a population of 199,682 aged >or=45 years, were adjusted for age, sex, deprivation, and smoking prevalence. Mortality rate ratios were 1.17 (95% CI 1.06-1

The structure of self-reported emotional experiences: a mixed-effects Poisson factor model.

Multivariate count data are commonly analysed by using Poisson distributions with varying intensity parameters, resulting in a random-effects model. In the analysis of a data set on the frequency of different emotion experiences we find that a Poisson model with a single random effect does not yield an adequate fit. An alternative model that requires as many random effects as emotion categories requires high-dimensional integration and the estimation of a large number of parameters. As a solution to these computational problems, we propose a factor-analytic Poisson model and show that a two-di

A Tutorial on Implementing Statistical Methods for Estimating Excess Death With a Case Study and Simulations on Estimating Excess Death in the Post-COVID-19 United States.

Excess death estimation, defined as the difference between the observed and expected death counts, is a popular technique for assessing the overall death toll of a public health crisis. The expected death count is defined as the expected number of deaths in the counterfactual scenario where prevailing conditions continued and the public health crisis did not occur. While excess death is frequently obtained by estimating the expected number of deaths and subtracting it from the observed number, some methods calculate this difference directly, based on historic mortality data and direct predicto

Application of modified Poisson regression for risk estimation of major neuropathology outcomes: National Alzheimer's coordinating center.

Odds ratios (OR) can overestimate risk when the prevalence of outcomes is more than 10%. We compared logistic and modified Poisson models in 5843 National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center decedents to examine associations of apolipoprotein (APOE) ε4, age at death, sex, and education with 7 neuropathologies. OR for neuritic plaques (6.28) and Braak stage (4.90) attenuated to prevalence rate ratios of 1.38 and 1.08; similar attenuation occurred for Lewy body disease, arteriolosclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and infarcts. Modified Poisson regression is critical for valid risk estimation, r

Using zero-inflated and hurdle regression models to analyze schistosomiasis data of school children in the southern areas of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a neglected disease prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world, especially in Africa. Detecting the presence of the disease is based on the detection of the parasites in the stool or urine of children and adults. In such studies, typically, data collected on schistosomiasis infection includes information on many negative individuals leading to a high zero inflation. Thus, in practice, counts data with excessive zeros are common. However, the purpose of this analysis is to apply statistical models to the count data and evaluate their performance and

Ebola Virus Dose Response Model for Aerosolized Exposures: Insights from Primate Data.

This study develops dose-response models for Ebolavirus using previously published data sets from the open literature. Two such articles were identified in which three different species of nonhuman primates were challenged by aerosolized Ebolavirus in order to study pathology and clinical disease progression. Dose groups were combined and pooled across each study in order to facilitate modeling. The endpoint of each experiment was death. The exponential and exact beta-Poisson models were fit to the data using maximum likelihood estimation. The exact beta-Poisson was deemed the recommended mode

Family history predicts major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in young adults with psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with psoriasis may have increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events (MACE), and a family history of CV disease (CVD) is an independent risk factor for MACE. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the risk of first-time MACE in patients with psoriasis with or without a family history of CVD. METHODS: Between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2011, we identified 2,722,375 individuals, including 25,774 and 4504 patients with mild and severe psoriasis, through administrative registers. Incidence rate ratios were estimated by Poisson regression. RESULTS: Mean baseline age

Association between large strongyle genera in larval cultures--using rare-event poisson regression.

Decades of intensive anthelmintic treatment has caused equine large strongyles to become quite rare, while the cyathostomins have developed resistance to several drug classes. The larval culture has been associated with low to moderate negative predictive values for detecting Strongylus vulgaris infection. It is unknown whether detection of other large strongyle species can be statistically associated with presence of S. vulgaris. This remains a statistical challenge because of the rare occurrence of large strongyle species. This study used a modified Poisson regression to analyse a dataset fo

Prevalence of anogenital warts among participants in private health plans in the United States, 2003-2010: potential impact of human papillomavirus vaccination.

OBJECTIVES: We estimated anogenital wart prevalence from 2003 to 2010 by gender and age group in a large US cohort with private insurance to detect potential decreases among people most likely to be affected by human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. METHODS: We restricted health care claims to those from individuals aged 10 to 39 years with continuous insurance within a given year. We derived anogenital wart diagnoses from a diagnosis of condyloma acuminata, or either a less specific viral wart diagnosis or genital wart medication combined with either a benign anogenital neoplasm or destruct

A spatial scan statistic for nonisotropic two-level risk cluster.

Spatial scan statistic methods are commonly used for geographical disease surveillance and cluster detection. The standard spatial scan statistic does not model any variability in the underlying risks of subregions belonging to a detected cluster. For a multilevel risk cluster, the isotonic spatial scan statistic could model a centralized high-risk kernel in the cluster. Because variations in disease risks are anisotropic owing to different social, economical, or transport factors, the real high-risk kernel will not necessarily take the central place in a whole cluster area. We propose a spati

Modeling the cost of influenza: the impact of missing costs of unreported complications and sick leave.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the economic impact of influenza is complicated because the disease may have non-specific symptoms, and many patients with influenza are registered with other diagnoses. Furthermore, in some countries like Norway, employees can be on paid sick leave for a specified number of days without a doctor's certificate ("self-reported sick leave") and these sick leaves are not registered. Both problems result in gaps in the existing literature: costs associated with influenza-related illness and self-reported sick leave are rarely included. The aim of this study was to improve es
