In the year 2009, thirty-six cases of human trichinellosis were registered in Poland, amounting to an incidence rate of 0,09 per 100 000 population. Of the registered cases 18 were confirmed and 18 were classed as probable according to EU definitions. There were no death cases resulting from the infections, however about 65,5% of the infected persons were hospitalized. Within the three registered outbreaks of trichinellosis two were caused by wild boar meat consumption and one by the consumption of meat products prepared from wild boar meat and pork. In all of the outbreaks, the contaminated m

There were 22 sporadic cases (71%), 3 outbreaks of two persons and 1 outbreak involving three persons. Tinned pork meat (especially homemade) was the main vehicle of infection botulin toxin. One death due to foodborne botulism was reported.

In Poland, 13,146 cases of rubella were registered in 2008 (incidence 34.5 per 100,000 population), of which 69 (0.5%) cases were laboratory confirmed. One case of congenital rubella syndrome was reported. The incidence in men (51.9) was 2.8-times higher than in women (18.2). The highest incidence was observed in children aged 7 and 8 years (331,4 and 268,2, respectively). No rubella deaths were registered. An improvement of laboratory diagnosis of reported cases is necessary to assess the impact of 2-dose immunization implemented in 2003 on rubella epidemiology in Poland.

In the year 2007 in Poland a total of 292 cases of human trichinellosis were registered, one of which was an individual case. The remaining cases occurred in eight outbreaks; one of them was among the largest of all the outbreaks in the past two decades. It occurred in the Zachodniopomorskie voivodeship (West Pomerania), and was caused by consumption of raw pork sausage distributed in many stores. Several cases linked to this outbreak of trichinellosis have occurred in Ireland, Germany and Denmark. The source of the infection in most of the outbreaks was wild boar meat. Only in two outbreaks t

In 2007, 4,147 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence 10.9 per 100,000 was lower compared to 2006 (39.6) and to the median incidence in 2001-2005 (188.5). The decrease of mumps incidence in 2007 is related to high coverage of routine two-dose immunisation against measles, mumps and rubella, maintained since its implementation in 2003. Children 5-9 year old were the most affected age group--82.1 per 100,000. Of 4,147 cases, 109 (2.63%) were hospitalized and no deaths attributed to mumps were reported.

In Poland, 22,891 cases of rubella were registered in 2007 (incidence 60.1 per 100,000 population), of which 152 (0.7%) cases were laboratory confirmed. The highest incidence was observed in children aged 6 and 7 years (492.8 and 540.5, respectively). No rubella deaths were registered. In Poland 120 measles cases were registered in 2006 (0.31 per 100,000 population). It was a substantial increase, compared to the years 2002-2005, when the number of locally-acquired cases was inferior to 1 case per 1 000 000 inhabitants. Three cases were linked to a large Ukrainian outbreak, including the 2006 index case on the Polish territory. Out of 106 cases with vaccination history available, 62 (58%) were not vaccinated, 26 (25%) were fully vaccinated (including 16 laboratory confirmed), and 18 (17%)--incompletely vaccinated. The most affected age groups were children under 2 years of a

This is the first annual epidemiological report on yersiniosis in Poland. In our country yersiniosis has been reported since 2003. The total number of 140 yersiniosis cases were reported in 2006 in Poland. The incidence rate was 0.37 per 100,000 population. In this year 111 cases of enteric yersiniosis and 29 cases of extra intestinal yersiniosis were notified. The most frequent clinical manifestation of extraintestinal yersiniosis was joints inflammatory. No death and outbreak were reported. About seventy percent of patients were hospitalized. The serotype was determined for 43 isolated strai

The total number of 70 cases of human trichinellosis was reported in Poland in 2005. Out of 70 cases 64 (91%) were notified from 3 outbreaks. Wild boar meat was the source of infections in all outbreaks. The presence of Trichinella endemic areas in the north, central and east parts of the country still determines the necessity of careful meat surveillance on Trichinella spp.

In Poland 138 cases of animal rabies were reported in 2005. Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies, which was introduced in 1993, has had a visible positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. In 2005 we observed about a twenty two-fold decrease in number of animal rabies cases in comparison with the year 2001. The outbreak of animal rabies, which started in 2001 in Wielkopolskie voivodeship, was still present but it is limited. Sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are mainly present in the north-east (56% of rabies cases) and south-east of the country. O

In 2005, 71,945 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (188.5 per 100,000) was lower compared to 2004 (354.1), when the highest mumps incidence was recorded since 1999. The recently observed improvement in the epidemiological situation of mumps (trend towards lower and less frequent epidemic peaks) reflect the use of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine which was increasingly acquired by parents at their own expense during the last decade. Mandatory, free of charge, vaccination of children aged 13-14 months with trivalent measles-mumps-rubella vaccine was implemented at the end of 2003

The number of notified dysentery cases in the three last years (2003, 2004, 2005) is the lowest of all years since 1918 when notification started. Only 80 cases were notified in the year 2005 (incidence rate 0.21 /100,000 population), while 74 cases in 2004 (incidence rate 0.19 /100,000 population. No one-death case was notified. The last three death cases were notified in 1999. All together 6 outbreaks were registered, one suspected. Modern nephrology developed in Poland mostly from the internal medicine department chaired in Warsaw by the great internist prof. Witold Orłowski (1874-1966). Three of his pupils Tadeusz Orłowski, Jan Roguski and Jakub Penson independently established the foundations of clinical nephrology and renal replacement therapy in different parts of Poland. T. Orłowski and his team worked in Warsaw, where despite developing clinical nephrology and dialysis also performed the first successful renal transplantation in Poland in 1966. Thereafter in 1975 the Institute of Transplantology in Warsaw was estab

In 2004, 135,179 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (354.1 per 100,000) was higher compared to 2003 (228.7) and to the median incidence in 1999-2002 (75.0). The increase of mumps incidence in 2004 corresponds to natural fluctuations in the epidemic cycle, it is however delayed and lower compared to the previous peaks. This prolongation of epidemic cycle can be attributed to increasing vaccine coverage among 3 year old children (from 16.7% in 1999 to 48.5% in 2004). Mandatory vaccination of children aged 13-14 months with trivalent measles-mumps-rubella vaccine was implemente
