Vascular effects of micro- and nanoplastics in humans: Systematic review.

Plastics have been accumulating in the environment for over 100 years and are environmental pollutants already recognized as relevant risk factors for human health, including the cardiovascular system. Plastics break down into smaller particles called microplastics (with diameters ranging from 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters) and nanoplastics (with diameters smaller than 1 micrometer), which are resistant to natural degradation. Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) enter the human body through ingestion, inhalation, dermal penetration, injection, and implantation. MNPs are heterogeneous in their origi

Alternation magnitudes of organic matter composition determines priming effect of biodegradable microplastics on lake carbon emission.

The ubiquitous existence of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) in aquatic ecosystems necessitates a thorough understanding of their impact on aquatic carbon cycling. Although BMPs are known to release dissolved organic matter (DOM) into aquatic environment, their priming effect (PE) on native organic carbon remains largely unexplored. Here, we employed 13C-stable isotope labeling to quantify PEs induced by three common BMPs-polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), and polybutylene succinate (PBS) in artificial lake water. The addition of all three BMPs to lake DOM enhanced CO2 emiss

Microbially Synthesized Polymer-Metal Nanoparticles Composites as Promising Wound Dressings to Overcome Methicillin-Resistance Staphylococcus aureus Infections.

Antimicrobial resistance has been declared one of the top 10 global public health threats. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading cause of recurring skin and soft tissue infections in patients with chronic skin conditions such as diabetic foot infections, making the treatment of the ulcers challenging. Wound dressings combined with metal nanoparticles have been suggested to prevent and treat MRSA-infected wounds. However, these particles are commonly synthesized by chemical approaches. In this study, we developed bio-based silver (Bio-AgNPs) and copper oxide nanopartic

PHA Production from Cheese Whey and "Scotta": Comparison between a Consortium and a Pure Culture of Leuconostoc mesenteroides.

It is urgent to expand the market of biodegradable alternatives to oil-derived plastics owing to (i) increasingly limited oil availability/accessibility, and (ii) the dramatic impact of traditional plastics on aquatic life, the food chain, all Earth ecosystems, and ultimately, human health. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are promising biodegradable polymers that can be obtained through microbial fermentation of agro-industrial byproducts, e.g., milk and cheese whey. Here, the PHA-accumulating efficiency of a mixed microbial culture (MMC, derived from activated sludges) grown on dairy byproducts

Microbial synthesis and characterization of poly(3-mercaptoproprionate-co-3-mercapto-2-methylproprionate) [P(3MP-co-3M2MP)]: Co-polythioesters consisting of achiral 3MP unit and (RS)-3M2MP unit.

Polythioesters (PTEs) can be microbially polymerized from thiol carboxylate precursors by polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)-producing bacteria. Poly[(RS)-3-mercapto-2-methylpropionate] [P(3M2MP)], characterized in our previous study, is an amorphous and highly elastic polymer. In this study, achiral 3-mercaptopropionate (3MP) was polymerized in recombinant Escherichia coli DH5α, and the copolymerization of 3MP with (RS)-3M2MP was subsequently investigated to characterize a PTE copolymer. P(3MP) was hard and brittle, and insoluble in most solvents, but its amorphous form immediately after extraction f

A Preliminary Evaluation on Poly(3-Hydroxypropionic Acid) as a Novel Feed Additive on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility, Selected Culturable Fecal Bacterial Counts, and In Vitro Fecal Fermentation in Growing Pigs.

Poly(3-hydroxypropionate) (P3HP) is a biodegradable member of the polyhydroxyalkanoate family that can be degraded into 3-hydroxypropionic acid, a three-carbon organic acid with potential biological activity. Although P3HP has attracted considerable interest for its microbial production and industrial applications, its potential as a feed ingredient in monogastric animals remains largely unexplored. Therefore, we aim to assess the effects of dietary P3HP supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal N retention and apparent N absorption, selected culturable fecal bacteri

Synergistic preparation of a straw fiber/polylactic acid composite with high toughness and strength through interfacial compatibility enhancement and elastomer toughening.

Plant fiber-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composites are extensively utilized in eco-friendly packaging, sports equipment, and various other applications due to their environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness. However, PLA suffers from brittleness and poor toughness, which restricts its use in scenarios demanding high toughness. To expand the application range of plant fiber-reinforced PLA-based composites and enhance their poor toughness, this study employed a two-step process involving wheat straw fiber (WF) to improve the interfacial compatibility between WF and PLA. Additionally, fo

Finding of Novel Galactose Utilizing Halomonas sp. YK44 for Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) Production.

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a biodegradable bioplastic with potential applications as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. However, efficient PHB production remains difficult. The main cost of PHB production is attributed to carbon sources; hence, finding inexpensive sources is important. Galactose is a possible substrate for polyhydroxyalkanoate production as it is abundant in marine environments. Marine bacteria that produce PHB from galactose could be an effective resource that can be used for efficient PHB production. In this study, to identify a galactose utilizing PHB producer, w

Semi-scale production of PHAs from waste frying oil by Pseudomonas fluorescens S48.

The present study aimed at developing a strategy to improve the volumetric production of PHAs by Pseudomonas fluorescens S48 using waste frying oil (WFO) as the sole carbon source. For this purpose, several cultivations were set up to steadily improve nutrients supply to attain high cell density and high biopolymer productivity. The production of PHAs was examined in a 14 L bioreactor as one-stage batch, two-stage batch, and high-cell-density fed-batch cultures. The highest value of polymer content in one-stage bioreactor was obtained after 60 h (33.7%). Whereas, the two-stage batch culture in

An Oxygen-Tolerant Archaeal Dehydratase Enables a Synthetic Pathway for 4-Hydroxybutyrate-Containing Polyesters from Glucose and CO2 in Cupriavidus necator.

4-Hydroxybutyrate (4HB) and the related compounds are important in the chemical industry, and microbial metabolic engineering for 4HB production has been pioneered via the TCA cycle route employing clostridial enzymes. This study focused on an alternative, energy-efficient route for 4HB-CoA production using a unique enzyme from a different domain of life. The [4Fe-4S] cluster-containing 4HB-CoA dehydratase (4HcD), catalyzing radical-based atypical dehydration/hydration, is one of the enzymes difficult to apply in biotechnological applications due to its high sensitivity to reactive oxygen spec

Display of Antigens on Polyester Inclusions Lowers the Antigen Concentration Required for a Bovine Tuberculosis Skin Test.

The tuberculin skin test is the primary screening test for the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis (TB), and use of this test has been very valuable in the control of this disease in many countries. However, the test lacks specificity when cattle have been exposed to environmental mycobacteria or vaccinated with Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG). Recent studies showed that the use of three or four recombinant mycobacterial proteins, including 6-kDa early secretory antigenic target (ESAT6), 10-kDa culture filtrate protein (CFP10), Rv3615c, and Rv3020c, or a peptide cocktail derived

Phosphate Limitation Induces Drastic Physiological Changes, Virulence-Related Gene Expression, and Secondary Metabolite Production in Pseudovibrio sp. Strain FO-BEG1.

Phosphorus is a vital nutrient for living organisms and is obtained by bacteria primarily via phosphate uptake. However, phosphate is often scarcely accessible in nature, and there is evidence that in many areas of the ocean, its concentration limits bacterial growth. Surprisingly, the phosphate starvation response has been extensively investigated in different model organisms (e.g., Escherichia coli), but there is a dearth of studies on heterotrophic marine bacteria. In this work, we describe the response of Pseudovibrio sp. strain FO-BEG1, a metabolically versatile alphaproteobacterium and p

Polymers for Pelvic Floor Repair: Current State and Future Prospects.

IMPORTANCE: Surgical repair of pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence frequently relies on polymeric biomaterials in sutures, meshes, and membranes to provide structural support during tissue healing and beyond. Polypropylene has long served as the default material owing to its strength, durability, and processability, but the chronic foreign body response and mechanical mismatch between stiff implants and viscoelastic pelvic tissue have been linked to complications, including mesh contraction, exposure, and dyspareunia. These limitations, together with regulatory actions on tra

Performance stability and adaptability of embedded phosphorus removal biofillers: insights from microbial community responses and regulatory mechanisms.

Given the typically low phosphorus (P) concentrations in municipal wastewater, this study established a reactor employing embedded P removal biofillers (EBPAOs). The P removal performance of the system was systematically evaluated under three aerobic-phase operating modes: high-P batch feeding (Experiment S), low-P batch feeding (Experiments T10-T2), and low-P continuous feeding (Phases A-E). The results exhibited that, under the low-P batch feeding mode, the aerobic P uptake rate (Pup-rate) of the EBPAOs followed the Michaelis-Menten equation (R2 = 0.940). Under the continuous feeding mode, t
