In 5 cases of polycythaemia vera and 2 cases with other myeloproliferative disorders accompanied by thrombocythaemia (megakaryocytic myelosis), the megakaryocytes were differentiated and studied by use of the combined application of cytophotometric determination of the DNA content and autoradiography with tritiated thymidine (3H-TdR) in vitro. Defects in nucleotide excision repair are associated with the human condition xeroderma pigmentosum which predisposes to skin cancer. Mice with defective DNA repair were generated by targeting the excision repair cross complementing gene (ERCC-1) in the embryonic stem cell line, HM-1. Karyotyping of Fasciola hepatica samples from Britain and Ireland has identified a triploid isolate which is effectively aspermic, rendering it necessarily asexually reproducing. Considering the extensive presence of asexually reproducing diploid and triploid Fasciola in Asia it is suggested that facultative gynogenesis is widespread in this parasite. This has important implications for the population genetics and evolution of Fasciola, especially in relation to the development and spread of drug resistance, and must be considered in the mathematical modelling of this process.

As a result of remote hybridization of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) with the representatives of certain other subfamilies of Cyprinidae a few viable F1 hybrids were obtained for the first time. A single triploid individual (3n = 75) of the Calfornia roach, Hesperoleucus symmetricus, was identified among a sample of nine specimens from the Russian River, California. The diploid number of H. symmetricus, as revealed by the karyotypes of the remaining eight specimens, is 50. Aside from the all-female triploid unisexual fishes, this is the first report of a triploid fish from the wild, and the second report of a triploid in a bisexual fish species. The most likely origin of the triploid was probably fusion of a haploid sperm with an unreduced ovum.
