Prognostic factors for sublingual gland carcinoma: a population-based Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinical features and prognostic factors for sublingual gland carcinoma. METHODS: This was a case-control study. Patients with surgically treated sublingual gland carcinoma were retrospectively included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database and divided into adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and non-ACC groups. Primary outcome variables were disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS). Prognostic factors for each group were analyzed using Cox models. RESULTS: We included 251 patients (115 men and 136 women). Compared with the non-ACC

Hepatitis B virus genotype surveillance in Canadian blood donors and a referred patient population, 2016-2021.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes (A-H) have a distinct geographic distribution and are highly associated with the country of birth. Canada has experienced increased immigration over the past decade, primarily from regions where HBV is endemic. This study investigated the proportions and trends of HBV genotypes within blood donor and clinical populations of Canada over the period 2016-2021. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study samples involved two cohorts: (1) Canadian blood donors (n = 246) deferred from donation due to HBV test positivity and (2) chronic HBV patients from

Quantifying Population Burden and Effectiveness of Decentralized Surveillance Strategies for Skin-Presenting Neglected Tropical Diseases, Liberia.

We evaluated programmatic approaches for skin neglected tropical disease (NTD) surveillance and completed a robust estimation of the burden of skin NTDs endemic to West Africa (Buruli ulcer, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis morbidity, and yaws). In Maryland, Liberia, exhaustive case finding by community health workers of 56,285 persons across 92 clusters identified 3,241 suspected cases. A total of 236 skin NTDs (34.0 [95% CI 29.1-38.9]/10,000 persons) were confirmed by midlevel healthcare workers trained using a tailored program. Cases showed a focal and spatially heterogeneous distribution. Thi

Global population structure and genotyping framework for genomic surveillance of the major dysentery pathogen, Shigella sonnei.

Shigella sonnei is the most common agent of shigellosis in high-income countries, and causes a significant disease burden in low- and middle-income countries. Antimicrobial resistance is increasingly common in all settings. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is increasingly utilised for S. sonnei outbreak investigation and surveillance, but comparison of data between studies and labs is challenging. Here, we present a genomic framework and genotyping scheme for S. sonnei to efficiently identify genotype and resistance determinants from WGS data. The scheme is implemented in the software package Myk

Design of the New York City Macroscope: Innovations in Population Health Surveillance Using Electronic Health Records.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic health records (EHRs) have the potential to offer real-time, inexpensive standardized health data about chronic health conditions. Despite rapid expansion, EHR data evaluations for chronic disease surveillance have been limited. We present design and methods for the New York City (NYC) Macroscope, an EHR-based chronic disease surveillance system. This methods report is the first in a three part series describing the development and validation of the NYC Macroscope. This report describes in detail the infrastructure underlying the NYC Macroscope; indicator definitions;

Declining incidence of AIDS-defining opportunistic illnesses: results from 16 years of population-based AIDS surveillance.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the incidence and risk factors of AIDS-defining opportunistic illnesses (AOIs) in the pre-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) (1993-1995), early-HAART (1996-2000), and late-HAART (2001-2008) periods. DESIGN: Prospective cohort analysis of AIDS surveillance data. METHODS: Individuals living with, or diagnosed with AIDS from 1993 through 2008 were included. Poisson regression models were used to estimate annual incidence rates of the eight most frequently occurring AOIs, and to compare these rates in the pre-HAART (1993-1995), early-HAART (1996-2000), and late-HA

A profile of injury in Fiji: findings from a population-based injury surveillance system (TRIP-10).

BACKGROUND: Over 90% of injury deaths occur in low-and middle-income countries. However, the epidemiological profile of injuries in Pacific Islands has received little attention. We used a population-based-trauma registry to investigate the characteristics of all injuries in Viti Levu, Fiji. METHOD: The Fiji Injury Surveillance in Hospitals (FISH) database prospectively collected data on all injury-related deaths and primary admissions to hospital (≥ 12 hours stay) in Viti Levu during 12 months commencing October 2005. RESULTS: The 2167 injury-related deaths and hospitalisations corresponded

FKS mutations and elevated echinocandin MIC values among Candida glabrata isolates from U.S. population-based surveillance.

Candida glabrata is the second leading cause of candidemia in the United States. Its high-level resistance to triazole antifungal drugs has led to the increased use of the echinocandin class of antifungal agents for primary therapy of these infections. We monitored C. glabrata bloodstream isolates from a population-based surveillance study for elevated echinocandin MIC values (MICs of ≥0.25 μg/ml). From the 490 C. glabrata isolates that were screened, we identified 16 isolates with an elevated MIC value (2.9% of isolates from Atlanta and 2.0% of isolates from Baltimore) for one or more of the

Population-based surveillance for scedosporiosis in Australia: epidemiology, disease manifestations and emergence of Scedosporium aurantiacum infection.

Australia-wide population-based surveillance for scedosporiosis identified 180 cases, with 118 (65.6%) cases of colonization and 62 (34.4%) cases of infection. Predisposing factors for isolation of Scedosporium spp. included chronic lung disease in 37.8% and malignancy in 21.7% of cases. Predictors of invasive disease (n=62) included haematological stem cell transplantation (n=7), leukaemia (n=16) and diabetes mellitus (n=8). Of 183 phenotypically-speciated isolates, 75 (41%) were Scedosporium prolificans (risk factors: haematologic cancer (n=17), neutropaenia (n=14)) and 108 (59%) had Scedosp

Reference population for international comparisons and time trend surveillance of preterm delivery proportions in three countries.

BACKGROUND: International comparison and time trend surveillance of preterm delivery rates is complex. New techniques that could facilitate interpretation of such rates are needed. METHODS: We studied all live births and stillbirths (>or= 28 weeks gestation) registered in the medical birth registers in Sweden, Denmark and Norway from 1995 through 2004. Gestational age was determined by best estimate. A reference population of pregnant women was designed using the following criteria: 1) maternal age 20-35, 2) primiparity, 3) spontaneously conceived pregnancy, 4) singleton pregnancy and 5) moth

Trends in population-based active surveillance for shigellosis and demographic variability in FoodNet sites, 1996-1999.

Shigella is a common cause of diarrhea in the United States, and accurate surveillance is needed to determine the burden of illness that they cause. Active surveillance for culture-confirmed Shigella infection was done as part of the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet). A total of 4317 cases of shigellosis were reported during 1996-1999 in the original FoodNet surveillance areas. The average annual incidence was 7.4 cases/100,000 population. The incidence was similar during 1996-1998, but it declined in 1999 to 5.0 cases/100,000 population. State-to-state variability was s

Population-based surveillance by colonoscopy: effect on the incidence of colorectal cancer. Telemark Polyp Study I.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) develop from adenomas. Polypectomy is believed to reduce the incidence of CRC, but this effect has never been explored in prospective controlled studies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of polypectomy on colorectal cancer incidence in a population-based screening program. METHODS: In 1983, 400 men and women aged 50-59 years were randomly drawn from the population registry of Telemark, Norway. They were offered a flexible sigmoidoscopy and, if polyps were found, a full colonoscopy with polypectomy and follow-up colonosco

Population genetics, trait mapping and fungal pathogen surveillance using untargeted sequencing in timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus).

Genomic tools are increasingly important for conservation and wildlife health surveillance, yet their use is often constrained by limited resources, sample quality, and the need for minimally invasive approaches. Here we show that untargeted low-coverage sequencing applied to scale-clip DNA can jointly address population structure, genotype-phenotype associations, and pathogen surveillance in timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus), a species threatened by habitat fragmentation, human encroachment, and the emerging fungal pathogen Ophidiomyces ophidiicola. We sequenced 107 snakes sampled from

Mandated capacity reductions created new gender disparities in liver cancer surveillance: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare capacity constraints often force providers to prioritize acute conditions over preventive services such as cancer screening. However, few studies have quantified the effects of capacity-constraining policies, which is critical for emergency preparedness. We assessed how precautionary government-mandated hospital capacity reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic affected liver cancer surveillance, health equity, and clinical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of 567,632 patients with hepatitis B/C in Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Database,

Population immunity enhances the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in Beijing revealed by wastewater genomic surveillance.

This study aims to elucidate the impact of population immunity on the regional evolution of SARS-CoV-2. A total of 3701 wastewater SARS-CoV-2 concentration values and 168 wastewater whole genomes of SARS-CoV-2 were obtained in Beijing over 11 months following the implementation of the "dynamic zero-COVID" policy adjustments in December 2022. The findings indicate that the number of variant strains identified through wastewater surveillance was 2.46 times greater than that detected by clinical monitoring, with single nucleotide polymorphisms showing an increase of up to 7.14 times. This enhance

Bayesian population-based assessment of ascertainment bias in flea-borne typhus surveillance in California, 2011-2019.

In California, public health disease surveillance data for flea-borne typhus (FBT) are generated by healthcare providers and laboratories who are responsible for notifying local health jurisdictions when the disease is detected. When accounting for the associations between socioeconomic status (SES) factors (age, race and ethnicity, poverty, unemployment, housing status and land use), R. typhi reservoir host presence (e.g., rats, cats, opossums), and healthcare-seeking behaviours, it is reasonable to consider whether these factors also lead to under-reporting of FBT surveillance and distorted
