Postmortem human brain tissue is a critical resource for studying neurodegenerative disease, providing critical insights into cellular morphology, pathology, and network connectivity. To improve standard microscopy and enable high-resolution, three-dimensional (3D) images of tissues at the subcellular level, tissue-clearing methods have been developed. These 3D images allow for the analysis of large regions of interest and can be used to study structural and spatial changes that occur during neurodegeneration. Additionally, 3D imaging facilitates the visualization of whole-cell morphology, esp

Forensic identification at fire scenes faces three core challenges: distinguishing cause of death (antemortem burning versus postmortem corpse burning), reconstructing criminal behavior (arson versus accident), and preserving evidence (thermal destruction versus artificial tampering). This case study systematically demonstrates the application value of burn trace characteristics in arson investigation through a typical intentional homicide and corpse burning case. Based on a three-dimensional analytical framework of human burn-behavioral characteristics, a systematic pathway incorporating reco

We sought to determine the effect of postmortem ventilation in combination with a suction pump in cases showing penetrating trauma to the chest with haemo- and/or pneumothorax, for better evaluation of the lungs in postmortem computed tomography (PMCT). The study included 6 subjects (1 female, 5 male; age 32-67years) with a penetrating gunshot or stab wound to the chest and consecutive pneumo- and/or haemothorax. The pneumo- and haemothorax were evacuated by a suction pump, and postmortem ventilation was applied using a home care ventilator. PMCT images with and without postmortem ventilation

Background/Objectives: Postmortem changes in tissue stiffness and organ morphology are critical for forensic medicine and pathology. Shear wave elastography (SWE) has emerged as a non-invasive tool to assess tissue stiffness, yet its potential for postmortem interval estimation remains underexplored. While previous studies have demonstrated early postmortem alterations in tissue elasticity, the temporal progression of these changes in different organs is not fully understood. This study aims to investigate the temporal changes in liver and spleen stiffness during the postmortem period using SW

A woman in her 80s was found unconscious after being hit by a car while crossing a road. After admission to hospitals, computed tomography (CT) scans revealed traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the patient was treated symptomatically. However, despite improvement of TBI in CT images, she died unexpectedly. Postmortem CT demonstrated cerebral infarction in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery (MCA). Histopathological examination revealed lumen-obstructing thrombosis and intimal injury upstream of the thrombosis in the right MCA. These findings suggested that the intimal injury in th

The analysis of cranial and facial fractures in skeletal remains of homicidal victims can prove challenging for forensic anthropologists and forensic pathologists in postmortem examination. In such cases, the use of 3-D computerized imaging to elucidate the fractures and patterns of injuries can provide strong medical evidence that is very useful during litigation and at trial. The authors describe 3-D reconstructions of the skull performed as part of forensic postmortem examination in a recent victim of homicide.

BACKGROUND: Despite major advances in ante-mortem diagnostics, clinicopathological autopsy remains a central instrument for determination of the cause of death, clinical quality assurance, and medical research. At the same time, autopsy rates in Germany have been declining for decades. Minimally invasive autopsy techniques may increase acceptance of postmortem examinations.
OBJECTIVE: To outline the role of minimally invasive autopsy techniques, to distinguish them from non-invasive imaging-based approaches, and to comparatively evaluate established methods of postmortem tissue sampling.

We report the autopsy of a traffic accident victim with a rare atlas fracture. The deceased was 52-year-old man found dead on the road because of a traffic accident. We performed a postmortem computed tomography and an autopsy on the body. The sagittal reformation image of postmortem computed tomography showed a vertically separated anterior arch of atlas, suggesting a "horizontal fracture." Therefore, we assumed that cervical hyperextension may have been one of the forces that affected him during the accident. Minor spinal cord injury was also noted. In this case, postmortem computed tomograp

Commotio cordis secondary to a blunt blow to the chest wall can result in ventricular fibrillation and sudden death in children. While it is commonly reported in adolescents during sporting activities, it may result from non-accidental trauma especially in infants and younger children. We report a case of a 6-month-old baby boy who presented to the emergency department in cardiac arrest. The patient's hospital records, postmortem imaging, and the autopsy results were reviewed. External examination of the infant did not reveal any evidence of trauma. Postmortem imaging revealed multiple healing

Discriminating perimortem versus postmortem skeletal fractures remains challenging when macroscopic features overlap, particularly because fracture morphology reflects both surface characteristics and underlying tissue integrity changes. This proof-of-concept study evaluated whether machine learning models could classify fracture surfaces by integrating scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image features with quantitative tissue-integrity variables. Human femur shafts (n = 34) from 20 donors were heated under controlled conditions to simulate postmortem intervals up to 16,000 accumulated degree

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance relaxation times of most tissues are expected to depend on temperature, which can impact findings in postmortem magnetic resonance imaging or when using magnetic resonance imaging for relaxation-based thermometry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the exact temperature dependency of the relaxation times T(1), T(2), T(2) *, and the magnetization transfer ratio in different structures of the human brain.
METHODS: To prevent fixation and autolysis effects, this study was performed with fresh postmortem brain tissues. Following autopsy, coronal brain slices

Numerous research groups worldwide have focused on postmortem imaging to bridge the resolution gap between clinical neuroimaging and neuropathology data. We developed a standardized protocol for brain embedding, imaging, and processing, facilitating alignment between antemortem MRI, postmortem MRI, and pathology to observe brain atrophy and structural damage progression over time. Using 7T postmortem ex vivo MRI, we explore the potential correlation of amygdala and hippocampal atrophy with neuropathological burden in both Down syndrome (DS) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) cohorts. Using 7T postmo

Cases of fatal outcome after surgical intervention are autopsied to determine the cause of death and to investigate whether medical error caused or contributed to the death. For medico-legal purposes, it is imperative that autopsy findings are documented clearly. Modern imaging techniques such as multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and postmortem CT angiography, which is used for vascular system imaging, are useful tools for determining cause of death. The aim of this study was to determine the utility of postmortem CT angiography for the medico-legal death investigation. This study inve

A case is presented in which pre-autopsy postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) revealed an unexpected brain abscess with a related frontal sinusitis and an erosion of the posterior wall of the frontal sinus. PMCT findings enabled the forensic pathologists to adapt protective measures during autopsy and protect their health from infection. Pre-autopsy PMCT has been also useful in the early differential diagnosis procedure. The complementary use of postmortem imaging and autopsy can improve the quality of forensic death investigations.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate early postmortem changes of the healthy pancreas longitudinally across antemortem computed tomography (AMCT) to postmortem computed tomography (PMCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included adult patients who were treated and died at a university hospital and underwent unenhanced AMCT within seven months before death, and PMCT within 24 hours after death. Included subjects had undergone pathological autopsy between 2013 and 2020 and were proven to have a healthy pancreas on autopsy. The pancreatic parenchyma on images was segmented using CT-value thresh

Gunshot injury has always been an important field of investigation in postmortem forensic radiology. The localization and retrieval of the bullet and of potentially important fragments are vital to these cases. Using postmortem multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) prior to forensic autopsy, we sought to illustrate the importance of this modality in the noninvasive characterization of gunshot wounds. We obtained and analyzed MDCT images in three cases of gunshot wounds (accidental close-range shotgun shooting, suicidal contact gunshot to the head and accidental long-range buckshot shoot

Suicide is the eighth cause of mortality in France and the leading cause in people aged between 25 and 34 years. The most common methods of suicide are hanging, self-poisoning with medicines and firearms. Postmortem computed tomography (CT) is a useful adjunct to autopsy to confirm suicide and exclude other causes of death. At autopsy, fractures of the hyoid bone or thyroid cartilage, or both, are found in more than 50% of suicidal hangings. Cervical vertebra fractures are rare and only seen in suicide victims jumping from a great height. Three-dimensional reconstructions from CT data are usef

OBJECTIVE: To present the appearance of the fetal akinesia deformation sequence by three-dimensional ultrasonography after four-dimensional ultrasonographic scanning.
METHODS: Three-dimensional surface-rendering images were used to show the fixed postural abnormalities of the fetal extremities and body. Four-dimensional ultrasonography was used to show that the postural abnormalities were fixed and to confirm the absence of fetal movements. These images were compared with the postmortem examination findings.
RESULTS: Three-dimensional ultrasonographic images of 3 cases of fetal akinesia defo

We present a case of achondrogenesis type II with normally developed extremities that was confirmed with postmortem ultrasonographic and radiographic examination. The length of the long bones may vary and the diagnosis of achondrogenesis should not be ruled out with normally developed extremities. Intrauterine sonographic examination of the vertebrae is very important and the absence of vertebral body ossification may be the unique finding of achondrogenesis type II. Axial ultrasonographic images and postmortem plain radiographs are useful to clarify the pathology.
