Postoperative neuropathic pain following gynecologic surgery is a rare phenomenon and is usually self-limiting in most cases. As with other causes of neuropathic pain, its lack of resolution can be difficult to treat and associated with severe impairments in quality of life. Most cases of postoperative neuropathic pain in gynecology are due to involvement of the iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, or genitofemoral nerves. For cases that do not respond to pharmacological treatment, we should consider minimally invasive treatment alternatives. Peripheral nerve hydrodissection presents growing evidenc

Postoperative pain management (POPM) remains a major clinical challenge despite its vital importance in reducing surgical stress, enabling early mobilization, and limiting postoperative complications. Conventional analgesic strategies are often constrained by short drug half-lives, repeated dosing requirements, systemic adverse effects, and the risk of opioid-related toxicity or dependence. These limitations suggest that the mode of drug delivery, in addition to drug selection itself, is a critical determinant of therapeutic performance. In this context, electrospun fibrous meshes represent a

Dextromethorphan, traditionally known as a cough suppressant, is emerging as a potent opioid-sparing analgesic in perioperative pain management. This review explores dextromethorphan's multifaceted role in reducing postoperative pain and minimizing opioid consumption, thus optimizing patient recovery and mitigating adverse effects associated with conventional analgesics. Dextromethorphan operates through diverse mechanisms, including N -methyl- d -aspartate receptor antagonism, sigma-1 receptor agonism, and the inhibition of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake, offering a broad therapeutic w

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain (POP) and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are frequent and distressing complications after surgery. Smoking has been proposed as a modifiable factor influencing these outcomes, yet evidence is inconsistent and scarce from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We examined whether current smoking status independently predicts early POP and PONV.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational study in two West Bank of Palestine tertiary referral hospitals over six months. Adults (≥ 18 years) undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia wer

Effective treatment of postoperative acute pain, together with early mobilization and nutrition, is one of the perioperative strategies advocated to improve surgical outcome and reduce the costs of hospitalization. Moreover, adequate pain control reduces perioperative morbidity related to surgical stress and can also prevent the incidence of chronic postoperative pain syndromes, whose treatment is still a challenge. The choice of the most appropriate analgesics depends not only on the drug class, but also on the most suitable route of administration, the best dosage for that route, and unique

BACKGROUND: Ketorolac use has significantly expanded for postoperative pain management since it first became available in the United States, primarily due to well established effects on patient pain scores and its ability to reduce perioperative opioid requirements. As an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, ketorolac use has raised clinical concern including particular controversy regarding its potential effects on bone healing, postoperative kidney function and perioperative bleeding.
OBJECTIVE: To review the supporting data from clinical studies addressing the safety of ketorolac use for postopera

OBJECTIVE: To design and evaluate a scale for measurement of postoperative pain in dogs.
DESIGN: Randomized, blinded, prospective study, with positive- and negative-control groups.
ANIMALS: 36 dogs undergoing general anesthesia for ovariohysterectomy and 12 dogs undergoing general anesthesia without surgery.
PROCEDURE: A pain assessment scale was developed for dogs, which incorporated physiologic data (heart and respiratory rates) and behavioral responses (response to palpation, activity, mental status, posture, and vocalization). This pain scale was then applied to a study in which dogs we

PROBLEM: Postoperative nausea and vomiting remains an important problem. Many risk factors have been identified; however, the importance of postoperative analgesic technique and patient expectation remain poorly defined.
METHODS: We prospectively collected data on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in four groups of randomly selected patients (n=50 per group) who received either simple analgesics, nurse-administered intravenous morphine (NAA), patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with morphine or epidural analgesia with bupivacaine and fentanyl. Patients were questioned regarding any past

Results of IV calcitonin treatment in patients suffering from postoperative phantom limb pain (n = 12) or causalgia following peripheral nerve lesions (n = 4) are reported. All patients were complained of severe pain after a traumatic event or amputation, with disturbed sleep in many cases. After only 1-2 infusions 10 patients with phantom limb pain (83%) were discharged from hospital pain-free. Pain was effectively reduced by up to 5 infusions in 2 patients (17%). A follow-up for maximally 24 months showed a recurrence of pain in only 4 patients with obvious stump problems or reamputations. T

Postoperative analgesia, once established initially by the titration method, is sustained with a flexible regime of papaveretum, infused continuously with a portable syringe pump. The initial analgesic requirement (IAR) for titrating the pain threshold level, was between 4 and 10 mg of papaveretum and the maintenance dose between 1 and 1·66 mg/hr for the first 24 hr and between 0·83 and 1 mg/hr for the second 24 hr. There was no significant association between IAR and the maintenance dose (P<0·2) nor was there any correlation between the maintenance dose, body weight, age, sex or nature of ope

INTRODUCTION: Adequate postoperative pain control is crucial for rehabilitation after open thoracotomy. The aim of this systematic review was to update the previous procedure-specific postoperative pain management recommendations for patients undergoing open thoracotomy.
METHODS: Using previously reported PROSPECT methodology, we performed a systematic review of randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating pain interventions for open thoracotomy published between 2015 and 2024. Data extracted from the included studies were evaluated by an expert subgroup that

BACKGROUND: It has previously been reported that venous cannulation-induced pain (VCP) can be used to predict acute postoperative pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Patients rating VCP at ≥2.0 VAS units had 3.4 times higher risk for moderate or severe pain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if VCP scores of ≥2.0 VAS units are associated with higher risk for acute postoperative pain after various common surgical procedures.
METHODS: In a prospective clinical observational study, 600 male and female 18- to 80-year-old patients scheduled for elective surgery were included. The prim

PURPOSE: The risk for the continuation or recurrence of neuropathic pain following trigeminal nerve repair has never been examined. The objective of this study was to determine which risk factors might be associated with the continuation or recurrence of neuropathic pain following trigeminal nerve microneurosurgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: An ambispective study design was used to assess subjects who underwent trigeminal nerve repair of the inferior alveolar nerve and lingual nerve between 2000 and 2010. The primary outcome was the presence or absence of neuropathic pain at 3, 6, and 12 months a

More than 300 million patients undergo surgery worldwide each year. Pain associated with these procedures is associated with short- and long-term negative sequelae for patients, healthcare providers, and healthcare systems. The following chapter is a review of the reality of postoperative pain management in everyday clinical routine based on survey- and registry-derived data with a focus on care in adults. Between 30% and up to 80% of patients report moderate to severe pain in the days after surgery. Structures, processes, and outcomes vary widely between hospitals and indicate gaps between ev

BACKGROUND: Opioids and benzodiazepines have been the mainstay of neonatal analgesia and sedation. However, based on evidence in neonatal animals, these drugs may be deleterious for the developing brain. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a central alpha-2 agonist, has sedative and analgesic effects and has been shown to be neuroprotective in animal models. Despite increasing use of DEX in newborns, there is a paucity of data regarding its safety and efficacy in this population.
OBJECTIVES: The impact of using DEX in postsurgical neonates, either alone or with opioid infusions, for sedation/analgesia was
