Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are defined as intrusive, recurrent and distressing thoughts, images or impulses, whereas compulsions are defined as repetitive behaviors or mental acts. While there is an associated distress, and indeed oftentimes, the individual's awareness that these behaviors are excessive and unreasonable, the individual continues to be disabled by an inability to cease their compulsions. The postpartum period may herald the onset of OCD or precipitate an exacerbation of the

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking may cause adverse effects during pregnancy and postpartum. The aim of this study was to evaluate several repercussions of active and/or passive smoking by the mother at home, during pregnancy, at delivery, as well as for the new born baby and breastfeeding, including the effect of quitting smoking in the first trimester of pregnancy.
METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was carried out with a sample of 800 pregnant women. Four evaluations were made: first and third trimester of pregnancy, and 2 and 6/8 months postpartum. Sociodemographic, obstetric, health a

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women. Because women generally present with more atypical symptoms of CVD than do men and because underlying CVD risk factors are often present for years before the onset of CVD, it is important to use innovative ways to identify women who should undergo CVD risk screening at a younger age. Pregnancy and the postpartum period afford us that opportunity, given that the development of certain pregnancy complications (hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, delivery of a neonate with fetal growth restr

Maternal cardiac disease (MCD) is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Because unplanned pregnancies are especially risky, active use of reliable contraception is critical in this population. Studies in the noncardiac population have demonstrated that the postpartum period is an ideal time to address contraceptive plans. This retrospective cohort study was designed to describe contraceptive choices in women with MCD in the immediate postpartum period and to identify factors associated with specific contraceptive plans. We included women with MCD who delivere

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Depression and glucose intolerance commonly co-occur among non-pregnant individuals; however, the temporal relationship between gestational diabetes (GDM) and depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period is less understood. Our objective was to assess longitudinal associations between depression early in pregnancy and GDM risk, as well as GDM and subsequent risk of postpartum depression.
METHODS: Data came from the prospective National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Fetal Growth Studies-Singleton cohort (2009-2013), and had been collected at 12 US cl

Hyperthyroidism can occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and the treatment of hyperthyroidism should be considered in the preconception phase. Pregnancy has multiple normal physiologic effects on thyroid hormone, which is a separate process distinct from syndromes such as transient hyperthyroidism of hyperemesis gravidarum. The rationale regarding antithyroid drug use during different stages of pregnancy is reviewed, including the literature regarding adverse neonatal outcomes such as aplasia cutis and methimazole embryopathy in the setting of first trimester maternal methimazole

HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet) syndrome is a dreaded complication that may develop during pregnancy or in the immediate postpartum period. Rarely this syndrome manifests itself with imaging findings. We report a case of HELLP syndrome in which the diagnosis was reaffirmed via imaging findings.

BACKGROUND: The primary goal of this study was to examine the impact of pregnancy, childbirth, and menstruation on the onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or exacerbation of OCD symptoms.
METHOD: One hundred twenty-six women aged between 18 and 69 years attending a university-based OCD clinic who met DSM-IV criteria for OCD according to the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Disorders were interviewed retrospectively to assess OCD onset and symptom exacerbation in relationship to reproductive events. Women were placed into 2 groups: those who had ever been pregnant (ever pr

CONTEXT: It has been suggested that the risk of inpatient psychiatric readmissions is elevated during the postpartum period. To our knowledge, no prior study has compared mothers and nonmothers to determine whether the risk of readmission differs between these 2 groups of women.
OBJECTIVES: To compare mothers and nonmothers to assess whether childbirth increases the risk for psychiatric readmission and to identify predictors of psychiatric readmission during the postpartum period.
DESIGN: A population-based cohort study merging data from the Danish Civil Registration System and the Danish Ps

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated determinants of bone and blood lead concentrations in 430 lactating Mexican women during the early postpartum period and the contribution of bone lead to blood lead.
METHODS: Maternal venous lead was measured at delivery and postpartum, and bone lead concentrations, measured with in vivo K-x ray fluorescence, were measured post partum. Data on environmental exposure, demographic characteristics, and maternal factors related to exposure to lead were collected by questionnaire. Linear regression was used to examine the relations between bone and blood lead, de

We report a case of anterior myocardial infarction which occurred in a young woman without history of cardio-vascular disease 10 days after she had given birth. Coronary arteriography performed 2 months later showed a pseudo-aneurysm of the anterior interventricular artery consecutive to spontaneous dissection of this vessel. The other coronary arteries were normal.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity affects a growing proportion of reproductive-age women, yet the postpartum period remains underrecognized as an opportunity for improving long-term maternal health. Pregnancy induces metabolic, inflammatory, and behavioral changes that, combined with pre-pregnancy obesity, may predispose women to persistent postpartum weight retention, incomplete metabolic recovery, and elevated lifetime risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the biological, behavioral, and structural determinants of postpartum health

BACKGROUND: Most studies on emotions in the perinatal period have focused on psychopathology, identifying groups of women with distinct symptom trajectories, but research on typical, normative changes in emotions across the perinatal period is scarce. This study examines typical patterns of emotions in low-risk, healthy perinatal population.
METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study with 151 participants who completed emotion-related questionnaires (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Perceived Stress Scale, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) six times dur

Approximately 35% of acute headaches in pregnant women are secondary to an underlying condition. Headaches are also common in the postpartum period where they occur in 30% to 40% of patients. The majority of secondary headaches are due to hypertensive disorders: preeclampsia-eclampsia, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, and acute arterial hypertension. Other causes include reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome and pituitary apoplexy, as well as life-threatening conditions such as cerebral venous thrombosis. In this article, we review general recommendations for imaging the p
