In order to solve the problem of re-oxidation after chemical remediation of soil contaminated with high levels of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), we investigated the use of chemical reduction combined with microbial stabilization to remediate soils contaminated with high Cr(VI) concentration. The leaching toxicity and microbial diversity of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil and the leaching toxicity of remediated soil oxidized by potassium permanganate (KMnO4) were measured. This article summarizes decontamination problems in handling transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) in the field of human pathology. Prevention of human fascioliasis could depend on clearing of the leafy salads from the metacercariae. The present work evaluated the role of some chemicals in detaching and killing this infective stage. It was observed that washing in running water for 10 minutes detached only 50% of the metacercariae. The first reported case of bilateral pyoderma gangrenosum of the hands is presented. One lesion was treated with wound care only, with spontaneous healing after two months. The contralateral lesion which occurred one month later was treated with wound care and oral dapsone. Healing occurred between four and six weeks after the start of dapsone. It is suggested that this acts by limiting the necrotizing process, thus allowing earlier epithelialization. Pyoderma gangrenosum is rare, and treatment is non-surgical.
