BACKGROUND: Ciclesonide is a new inhaled corticosteroids licensed for the prophylactic treatment of persistent asthma in adults. Currently beclomethasone dipropionate, budesonide and fluticasone propionate are the most commonly prescribed inhaled corticosteroids for the treatment of asthma but there has been no systematic review comparing the effectiveness and safety ciclesonide to these agents. We therefore aimed to systematically review published randomised controlled trials of the effectiveness and safety of ciclesonide compared to alternative inhaled corticosteroids in people with asthma.

Thirty-eight patients with chronic asthma requiring continuous oral corticosteroid treatment took part in a 2-year study. Budesonide, a new inhalation steroid with high topical activity and low systemic effects, was given in stepwise increasing doses from 200 micrograms daily up to 800-1600 micrograms daily and prednisolone doses were decreased gradually on an individual basis. The present study evaluated the effect of the type of norgestomet ear implant (new vs. used) on the ovarian follicular response (experiment 1) and pregnancy per artificial insemination (AI) (P/AI; experiment 2) of beef heifers subjected to an estradiol plus progestin timed artificial insemination (TAI) program. The aim of the study was to compare the long term effects of low dosage prednisolone or deflazacort treatment on bone mass in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica. Whilst patch testing with corticosteroids in ethanol is more sensitive than either petrolatum or the cream formulation, the frequency of false-negative reactions is not known. We have compared patch testing with corticosteroid at 1% in ethanol with intradermal (i.d.) tests using 1 mg corticosteroid suspended in normal saline. The correct concentration and vehicle for patch testing with corticosteroids is in many instances not known. The results of this study suggest that 1% in ethanol should be the initial choice, unless it can be shown that petrolatum as a vehicle is as sensitive (tixocortol pivalate and budesonide). We could find no evidence for the anti-inflammatory effects of corticosteroids inhibiting the patch test at higher concentrations. Using ethanol as the vehicle resulted in reactions developing at earlier time points than with petrolatum.
