[Compensation for presbyopia using contact lenses].

Contact lens fitting for presbyotic patients needs more than simple fitting shill; patients need additional psychological support. The wearer has to accept optical quality reduction due to the multifocality of the lens design. In general, the technical fitting of presbyotic contact lenses is comparable to monofocal systems. They work with the same rules of performance. The difference lies in the principles of correction by the lens itself. Simple presbyotic systems use uncorrected optical aberration to widen depth perception. These lenses are suitable for young presbyopes, up to a need of 1 di

[Presbyopia treatment using a femtosecond laser].

Presbyopia is by far the most common refractive error worldwide, with no permanent therapeutic option available. All efforts to restore accommodation by the use of surgery have not led to a generally accepted therapy. However, there is evidence from an animal model that the use of a femtosecond (fs) laser might influence the modulus of elasticity in the lens. Fs-laser impulses can create intralenticular disruption in animal eyes as well as human cadaver lenses and improve elasticity. The concept of treating presbyopia with fs-laser requires a new, complex theory combining the optical and the m

Theory behind surgical correction of presbyopia.

This relatively new procedure is interesting, promising, and appears to be safe. These issues are currently being evaluated by the US FDA and in several other countries, most notably Canada. The procedure is based on Ronald A. Schachar's new theory of how accommodation occurs. The clinical course of the patients and the new wavefront analysis appear to support the theory. Regardless of the exact mechanism, clinically, the patients read and behave as though they have had their accommodation restored. The author certainly has been very impressed and excited with the results in his patients whose

Presbyopia: Current Perspectives and Prospects for Patients.

Presbyopia, the ubiquitous loss of near vision function with age, has undergone significant reframing over the past decade. Indeed, in the last 10 years since Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics' last feature issue on presbyopia, research has progressed from viewing the refractive condition primarily as a decline in accommodative amplitude to recognising it as a multifactorial physiological process involving progressive lenticular stiffening, alterations in the capsule and zonule nexus and changes in optics. Advances in imaging and biomechanical assessment have deepened our understanding of the

[Recent advances in the mechanistic research of presbyopia].

Presbyopia is a common age-related disorder characterized by a progressive decline in ocular accommodative function, primarily manifesting as reduced near visual acuity. Traditionally, it has been attributed to lens sclerosis. Recent molecular biological studies have elucidated the core mechanisms underlying lens sclerosis from the perspectives of oxidative stress, cytoskeletal remodeling, and activation of mechanically sensitive ion channels. In addition, emerging biomechanical imaging technologies such as optical coherence elastography and Brillouin microscopy have provided novel tools for t

Exploring the Experience of Living with and Managing Presbyopia.

SIGNIFICANCE: Presbyopia typically occurs around 40 years of age and affects approximately one-quarter of the global population. Up to October 2021, there were no approved pharmacotherapies for presbyopia, and common treatments, such as glasses, can have disadvantages for individuals' health-related quality of life. PURPOSE: This study aimed to document the experience of living with and managing presbyopia, identify perspectives on treatment options, and determine whether there is an unmet need in the treatment landscape. METHODS: Coded transcripts of concept elicitation (CE; n = 20) and cog

A Review of Lens Biomechanical Contributions to Presbyopia.

Purpose: Presbyopia-the progressive loss of near focus with age-is primarily a result of changes in lens biomechanics. In particular, the shape of the ocular lens in the absence of zonular tension changes significantly throughout adulthood. Contributors to this change in shape are changes in lens biomechanical properties, continuous volumetric growth lens, and possibly remodeling of the lens capsule. Knowledge in this area is growing rapidly, so the purpose of this mini-review was to summarize and synthesize these gains. Methods: We review the recent literature in this field. Results: The mechan

Hocus pocus: Breaking the curse of presbyopia.

BACKGROUND: Research and awareness on refractive solutions for presbyopia, commonly known as the "Curse of the 40's," is essential as a large population in the world suffer from vision impairments. Population-based surveys have shown that one billion people in the world are in presbyopic age. PURPOSE: Many structural and physiological changes occur in the eye with the onset of presbyopia, including the decrease in amplitude of accommodation. At present, various static and dynamic techniques have been attempted to give presbyopes good vision at near-, intermediate-, and far-viewing distances.

A new trifocal corneal inlay for presbyopia.

Corneal inlays (CIs) are the most recent surgical procedure for the treatment of presbyopia in patients who want complete independence from the use of glasses or contact lenses. Although refractive surgery in presbyopic patients is mostly performed in combination with cataract surgery, when the implantation of an intraocular lens is not necessary, the option of CIs has the advantage of being minimally invasive. Current designs of CIs are, either: small aperture devices, or refractive devices, however, both methods do not have good performance simultaneously at intermediate and near distances i

Small-aperture strategies for the correction of presbyopia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The recent scientific literature provides evidence of long-term results with small-aperture corneal inlays, as well as new evidence from a multicenter postmarket study of small-aperture intraocular lenses (IOLs) and early reports of the use of topical agents for presbyopia correction through pupil constriction. The field of small-aperture optics is growing and changing rapidly. RECENT FINDINGS: This article reviews what is known to date about various small-aperture optics platforms, including a posterior chamber IOL, add on device, corneal inlay, contact lenses, and pupil-c

Latanoprost could exacerbate the progression of presbyopia.

PURPOSE: Prostaglandin analogues (PG) reduce intra-ocular pressure by enhancing uveoscleral flow at the ciliary body, which controls accommodation via the ciliary muscle. We investigated the effect of PG on accommodation and presbyopia progression in glaucoma patients. METHODS: We conducted a clinic-based, retrospective, cross-sectional study. Inclusion criteria were bilateral phakic patients aged 40-69 years with best corrected visual acuity better than 20/30. Exclusion criteria were any disease affecting vision other than glaucoma and history of ocular surgery. Subjects with no prescription
