[Adrenaline in the prevention and treatment of adverse effects of arsobal therapy. Apropos of 776 cases of human African trypanosomiasis caused by T. gambiense in the Health Service of Fontem (U.R. Cameroon)].

The authors consider evident similarities of toxic effects in the treatment of human african trypanosomiasis with Arsobal, and those in the treatment of syphilis with arsenobenzole derivatives. Considering that a majority of authors recommended adrenaline as a preventive and curative measure in the course of arsenobenzole encephalopathy, the authors have experimented this same medication in the prevention and treatment of toxic side effects caused by Arsobal therapy of H.A.T. In the course of treating 776 sleeping sickness patients with Arsobal in conjunction with adrenaline, an incidence of 1

Combining HIV prevention Options with Mental health service delivery for Adolescent girls and young women (CHOMA): results of a pilot hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized trial in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) at risk of HIV frequently have symptoms of common mental disorders (CMDs), which are associated with lower pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence. We conducted a pilot hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial (CHOMA) to evaluate whether an evidence-based mental health intervention adapted for PrEP delivery ("Youth Friendship Bench SA") could address CMD and PrEP adherence among South African AGYW. METHODS: CHOMA was conducted in Johannesburg from April 2023 to February 2024. We enrolled AGYW (18-25 years) who were already on or willing

"I Just Need Guidance Through This Maze I'm Going Through": Addressing Unmet Basic and Mental Health Needs to Facilitate Engagement in HIV Prevention Services in the Context of Stimulant Use.

There is a global syndemic of HIV, mental health challenges, substance use, and structural barriers. Critical to local HIV prevention efforts is understanding this syndemic in the context of rising stimulant use to inform intervention development. Adhering to the EPIS model, we conducted 32 in-depth individual qualitative interviews with people who use stimulants and have unmet structural needs to (1) identify barriers/facilitators of HIV prevention and (2) get feedback on evidence-based intervention content (e.g., emotion- and problem-focused coping skills) to address identified barriers. Negative changes in illicit drug supply during COVID-19: Associations with use of overdose prevention and health services among women sex workers who use drugs (2020-2021).

BACKGROUND: Women sex workers are a highly criminalized population who are over-represented amongst people who use drugs (PWUD) and face gaps in overdose prevention and harm reduction services. British Columbia, Canada continues to face a pronounced drug poisoning crisis of the illicit drug supply, which has intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to examine the prevalence and structural correlates of experiencing negative changes in illicit drug supply (e.g., availability, quality, cost, or access to drugs) amongst women sex workers who use drugs during the first year of t

Child oral health and preventive dental service access among children with intellectual disabilities, autism and other educational additional support needs: A population-based record linkage cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Inequalities in child oral health are a global challenge and the intersection of socioeconomic factors with educational additional support needs (ASN), including children with intellectual disabilities or autism, have thus far received limited attention in relatively small clinical studies. We aimed to address this evidence gap by investigating oral health and access to preventive dental services among children with ASN compared to the general child population. METHODS: Cohort study linking data from six Scotland-wide health and education databases compared: dental caries experienc

Management of possible sexual, injecting-drug-use, or other nonoccupational exposure to HIV, including considerations related to antiretroviral therapy. Public Health Service statement. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The most effective methods for preventing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are those that protect against exposure to HIV. Preventive behaviors include sexual abstinence, sex only with an uninfected partner, consistent and correct condom use, abstinence from injecting-drug use, and consistent use of sterile equipment by those unable to cease injecting-drug use. Some healthcare providers have proposed offering antiretroviral drugs to persons with unanticipated sexual or injecting-drug-use HIV exposure to prevent transmission. However, because no data exist regarding the efficacy of

Do gay and bisexual men who conceal their same-sex behavior prefer different kinds of health services? Findings across four cities to inform client-centered HIV prevention in China.

BACKGROUND: In China, addressing disparities in the HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) requires targeted efforts to increase their engagement and retention in prevention. In an effort to advance MSM-friendly HIV services within China, and informed by community-based partnerships, we tested whether MSM who have ever versus never disclosed their same-sex behavior to healthcare providers (HCP) differ in sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics as well as the qualities of sexual health services each group would prefer to access. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional surve

"He does not have to wait under a tree": perceptions of men, women and health care workers on male partner involvement in prevention of mother to child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus services in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: The perception of male involvement (MI) in maternal child health services is multifaceted and differs among varying programs and populations. In the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) context, MI includes men's attendance at antenatal care (ANC) clinics, undertaking an HIV tests within the ANC and financial and psychological support. Contexualising the definition of MI is fundamental in the development of MI in PMTCT policy and interventions. The objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of men, women and health care workers on male partner involvement

[Occupational spinal diseases in employees of nursing services--epidemiological and legal insurance aspects (III). 3: Intervertebral disk-induced diseases of the lumbar spine in health care employees--expert assessment and prevention].

Due to spine-loading activities nursing professionals have a relatively high incidence/prevalence of low back pain. As lumbar disc disorders can be regarded as occupational diseases (since January 1993, occupational disease BK 2108, normally more than 10 years of exposition, lumbar disc disorders with pain and reduced motility) international literature is reviewed. Own results of different prevalence-, case-control- and incidence studies (relative risk for lumbago sciatica/odds ratio for disc prolaps appr. 3-6 depending on age and occupational age) are presented. Finally the question of compen

Person-centred HIV care and prevention for youth in rural South Africa: preliminary implementation findings from Thetha Nami ngithethe nawe stepped-wedge trial of peer-navigator mobilization into mobile sexual health services.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (ART)-based prevention, population-level impact remains limited because those at high risk of HIV acquisition are not reached by conventional services. We investigated whether youth-centred and tailored HIV prevention, delivered by community-based peer navigators alongside sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, can mobilize demand for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and ART among adolescents and young adults (AYA) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. METHODS: Thetha Nami ngithethe nawe is a cluster-randomized stepped-wedge tr

A mixed methods process evaluation: understanding the implementation and delivery of HIV prevention services integrated within sexual reproductive health (SRH) with or without peer support amongst adolescents and young adults in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Combination prevention interventions, when integrated with community-based support, have been shown to be particularly beneficial to adolescent and young peoples' sexual and reproductive health. Between 2020 and 2022, the Africa Health Research Institute in rural South Africa conducted a 2 × 2 randomised factorial trial among young people aged 16-29 years old (Isisekelo Sempilo) to evaluate whether integrated HIV and sexual and reproductive health (HIV/SRH) with or without peer support will optimise delivery of HIV prevention and care. Using mixed methods, we conducted a process ev

Preventing sickness absenteeism among employees with common mental disorders or stress-related symptoms at work: Design of a cluster randomized controlled trial of a problem-solving based intervention versus care-as-usual conducted at the Occupational Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Common mental disorders (CMDs) are among the leading causes of sick leave in Sweden and other OECD countries. They result in suffering for the individual and considerable financial costs for the employer and for society at large. The occupational health service (OHS) can offer interventions in which both the individual and the work situation are taken into account. The aim of this paper is to describe the design of a study evaluating the effectiveness of an intervention given at the OHS to employees with CMDs or stress-related symptoms at work. In addition, intervention fidelity an

Patterns of preventive dental behavior.

Preventive dental behavior was examined using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 1971-75 conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Most research to date has dealt with the use of all types of dental services, with relatively few studies focusing on utilization of dental services for preventive purposes or on preventive dental behavior. Economic theory on the demand for health services and the Andersen model of health services utilization were applied to examine predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics which may influence use of preventive de
