Histopathology of IQ-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in nonhuman primates.

This study describes histopathological findings in 26 nonhuman primates (cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys) with liver tumors after dosing with IQ for time periods of 27 to 72 months. In most of the cases 2-5 well-defined tumor nodules were present in the liver at the time of autopsy. In 5 cases there were numerous nodules occupying most of the liver. Intrahepatic vascular invasion was observed in 14 cases, and lung metastases in 6 cases. The histology of 72 nodules from 21 cases with well-defined tumors and the 5 cases with massive involvement was studied. The majority of the tumors represented w

Retroviruses and inflammatory myopathies in humans and primates.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1), the human foamy retrovirus and the simian immunodeficiency viruses have been associated with the development of an inflammatory myopathy in humans and primates. The myopathy caused by HIV and HTLV-1 is not due to direct infection of the muscle by these viruses, but rather due to an immunopathologic process triggered by the viruses, mediated by autoaggressive CD8+ cells in the context of MHC-class I antigen expression. This has been based on a series of studies utilizing immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridizat

Corpus callosum in sexually dimorphic and nondimorphic primates.

The midsagittal area and other morphological measures were taken on the corpus callosum of four different species of primate: Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, Callithrix jacchus, and Saguinus oedipus. The first two species are strongly dimorphic, whereas the New World forms show little dimorphism with regard to overall body size, canines, and brain weight. Neither total corpus callosal area (TOTALCC), or other parts of the corpus callosum (CC) showed any significant sexual dimorphism in any of the primate species sampled. Only in M. mulatta did a sexual dimorphism appear to be significant. In

Intravenous self-administration of 4-methylaminorex in primates.

The reinforcing effects of (+/-)-cis-2-Amino-4-methyl-5-phenyl-2-oxazoline (4-methylaminorex) were determined in two models of intravenous drug self-administration in primates. In baboons, lever pressing was maintained under a fixed-ratio (FR) 80- or 160-schedule of intravenous cocaine delivery (0.32 mg/kg per injection). Each drug injection was followed by a 3-h time-out allowing a maximum of 8 injections per day. Vehicle or 4-methylaminorex doses were substituted for cocaine for a period of 15 or more days. One of the two 4-methylaminorex doses evaluated (0.32 mg/kg per injection) maintained

Retinal vasculitis in ocular toxoplasmosis in nonhuman primates.

Six monkeys had prior systemic immunization followed by intraretinal challenge to each eye with Toxoplasma antigens. All eyes developed iridocyclitis, vitritis, and retinal edema, but no necrotizing retinochoroiditis. One-half of the eyes were then challenged with living organisms and the other one-half with Toxoplasma antigens. All eyes developed iridocyclitis, vitritis, and retinal edema, but no necrotizing retinochoroiditis. Four months later, the right eye of each monkey was challenged with living Toxoplasma organisms injected intraretinally. Each injected eye developed iridocyclitis, vitr

Peripheral nerve injuries: studies in higher nonhuman primates.

Two skeletally mature baboons underwent comparative neurorrhapies following transsection of both ulnar nerves without loss of nerve tissue. In baboon 1 there was no difference in objective evaluations at 12 months when an epineurial neurorrhaphy was compared to a perineurial fascicular neurorrhaphy. In baboon 2, the one that had interfacicular grafts in one upper extremity and an epineurial neurorrhaphy on the other side, there was significantly better functional return on the epineurial side than one the graft side. Grass and histological evaluation showed that the grafts retained their integ

Ophthalmologic applications of computed tomography in nonhuman primates.

The orbital contents of 28 baboons are defined by computed tomography (CT), which provides a simple, reliable, reproducible, and accurate technique for the experimental investigation of the orbit of the nonhuman primate. This method is applied to the diagnosis of exophthalmos. The suprasellar and other basal subarachnoid cisterns are precisely delineated using intrathecal enhancement prior to CT imaging (metrizamide CT cisternography).

Experimental scoliosis in primates. Failure of a technique.

An attempt to produce scoliosis in young baboons by excision of the heads of ribs failed in thirteen growing animals observed for up to a year after operation. Other investigators have failed to produce scoliosis in primates by similar and other techniques that had successfully produced scoliosis in quadruped animals. The possible reasons for this are discussed, especially in the light of clinical trials that are being carried out with techniques transposed from the quadruped experimental animal to the scoliosis clinic.

Experimental model of facial paralysis by nerve compression in primates (Callithrix sp.): a new model of facial paralysis in small nonhuman primates.

CONCLUSION: We conclude that facial nerve injury induced by compression is associated with a reasonable time window (4 weeks) that allows possible neurotrophic effects to be analyzed. Additionally, there are no hints of cross-innervation by the contralateral facial nerve or parallel innervation by other nerves in the hemiface ipsilateral to the injured nerve. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to develop an experimental model of facial nerve injury in nonhuman primates (Callithrix sp.). METHODS: In this study, individuals of the non-human primate species Callithrix sp. were subjected to thr

Genetic diversity of Bordetella bronchiseptica isolates obtained from primates.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a highly contagious bacterial respiratory pathogen with a broad host range of wild and domesticated mammals that can cause a variety of clinical disease outcomes ranging from asymptomatic carriage to severe pneumonia. The goal of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of B. bronchiseptica isolates obtained from primates and evaluate the antimicrobial resistance harbored by these isolates. Two isolates were identified as belonging to B. bronchiseptica lineage II and 13 isolates represented new sequence types within B. bronchiseptica lineage I clonal comple

Neuronal Mechanisms Underlying Face Recognition in Non-human Primates.

Humans and primates rely on visual face recognition for social interactions. Damage to specific brain areas causes prosopagnosia, a condition characterized by the inability to recognize familiar faces, indicating the presence of specialized brain areas for face processing. A breakthrough finding came from a non-human primate (NHP) study conducted in the early 2000s; it was the first to identify multiple face processing areas in the temporal lobe, termed face patches. Subsequent studies have demonstrated the unique role of each face patch in the structural analysis of faces. More recent studies

Opioid abuse and SIV infection in non-human primates.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and drug abuse are intertwined epidemics, leading to compromised adherence to combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) and exacerbation of NeuroHIV. As opioid abuse causes increased viral replication and load, leading to a further compromised immune system in people living with HIV (PLWH), it is paramount to address this comorbidity to reduce the NeuroHIV pathogenesis. Non-human primates are well-suited models to study mechanisms involved in HIV neuropathogenesis and provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in the comorbidity of HIV

A Literature Review of Unintentional Intoxications of Nonhuman Primates.

Reports of unintentional intoxications in nonhuman primates (NHP) are few and an up-to-date review of such intoxications in NHP is lacking. We reviewed the published veterinary literature on unintentional intoxications in wild and captive NHP in order to provide a useful resource on known toxic agents of NHP for veterinarians, caregivers, and researchers who work with NHP. To these ends, we first conducted a literature search for books, book chapters, peer-reviewed publications, conference proceedings, and newsletters in academic literature databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, BioOne Comp

Comparative computer-assisted sperm analysis in non-human primates.

BACKGROUND: Biomedical research has recently focused on developing new models of human disease by implementing genome-editing strategies in non-human primates (NHPs) to introduce relevant gene mutations. There is a need to establish objective semen evaluation methods to select sires for in vitro fertilization to perform germline editing in embryos. METHODS: Sperm motility kinematic parameters were evaluated using a computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) instrument for rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis), and common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Outcome expectancy and suboptimal risky choice in nonhuman primates.

Animals will favor a risky option when a stimulus signaling reward bridges the choice and the outcome. The present experiments investigated signal-induced risky choices and reward-outcome expectations in rhesus and capuchin monkeys. Risky choice was assessed by preference for a large-probabilistic reward over a modest-certain reward. Outcome expectancy was assessed by providing a truncation-response to shorten the delay period. In Experiment 1 both species generally favored the risky option compared to a safe option when the outcomes were signaled and generally shortened the delays except when
