Denture flask fabrication using fused deposition modeling three-dimensional printing.

PURPOSE: This paper describes a method for making a customized denture flask using fused deposition modeling (FDM) by three-dimensional (3D) printing. We have proposed a new digital dental prosthesis using conventional dental base materials and artificial teeth. METHODS: Using the universal development system software, a denture-designed Standard Tessellation Language (STL) file and a denture flask STL file were superimposed, and the denture region was set as an empty space. After setting the offset value to 200μm between the denture base and teeth for artificial tooth positioning, the flask

Three-dimensional Printing in Anatomy Education: Assessing Potential Ethical Dimensions.

New technological developments have frequently had major consequences for anatomy education, and have raised ethical queries for anatomy educators. The advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing of human material is showing considerable promise as an educational tool that fits alongside cadaveric dissection, plastination, computer simulation, and anatomical models and images. At first glance its ethical implications appear minimal, and yet the more extensive ethical implications around clinical bioprinting suggest that a cautious approach to 3D printing in the dissecting room is in order. Low Cost and Lithography-free Stamp fabrication for Microcontact Printing.

Microcontact printing (µCP) is a commonly used technique for patterning proteins of interest on substrates. The cells take the shape of these printed patterns. This technique is used to explore the effect of cellular morphology on their various functions such as survival, differentiation, migration, etc. An essential step for µCP is to fabricate a stamp from a silicon mould, prepared using lithography. Lithography is cost intensive and needs a high level of expertise to handle the instrumentation. Also, one stamp can be used to print patterns of one size and shape. Here, to overcome these limi

The role of 3D printing in treating craniomaxillofacial congenital anomalies.

Craniomaxillofacial congenital anomalies comprise approximately one third of all congenital birth defects and include deformities such as alveolar clefts, craniosynostosis, and microtia. Current surgical treatments commonly require the use of autogenous graft material which are difficult to shape, limited in supply, associated with donor site morbidity and cannot grow with a maturing skeleton. Our group has demonstrated that 3D printed bio-ceramic scaffolds can generate vascularized bone within large, critical-sized defects (defects too large to heal spontaneously) of the craniomaxillofacial s

3D Printing in Surgical Management of Double Outlet Right Ventricle.

Double outlet right ventricle (DORV) is a heterogeneous group of congenital heart diseases that require individualized surgical approach based on precise understanding of the complex cardiovascular anatomy. Physical 3-dimensional (3D) print models not only allow fast and unequivocal perception of the complex anatomy but also eliminate misunderstanding or miscommunication among imagers and surgeons. Except for those cases showing well-recognized classic surgical anatomy of DORV such as in cases with a typical subaortic or subpulmonary ventricular septal defect, 3D print models are of enormous v

3-Dimensional printing guide template assisted percutaneous vertebroplasty: Technical note.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is currently considered as an effective treatment for pain caused by acute osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture. Recently, puncture-related complications are increasingly reported. It's important to find a precise technique to reduce the puncture-related complications. We report a case and discussed the novel surgical technique with step-by-step operating procedures, to introduce the precise PVP assisted by a 3-dimensional printing guide template. Based on the preoperative CT scan and infrared scan data, a well-designed individual guide template could b

"Black Bone" MRI: a novel imaging technique for 3D printing.

OBJECTIVES: Three-dimensionally printed anatomical models are rapidly becoming an integral part of pre-operative planning of complex surgical cases. We have previously reported the "Black Bone" MRI technique as a non-ionizing alternative to CT. Segmentation of bone becomes possible by minimizing soft tissue contrast to enhance the bone-soft tissue boundary. The objectives of this study were to ascertain the potential of utilizing this technique to produce three-dimensional (3D) printed models. METHODS: "Black Bone" MRI acquired from adult volunteers and infants with craniosynostosis were 3D r

Alignment of One-Dimensional SnO2 Lines by Electrohydrodynamic Jet Printing.

One-dimensional (1-D) SnO2 line as a representative semiconducting oxide were formed by electro- hydrodynamic jet-printing (EHD) of tin chloride pentahydrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, 1,200 k, Aldrich) solution ink. The 1-D polymer lines including Sn precursors were created by controlling the viscosity, that is, polymer/tin precursor ratio, and adjusting printing conditions such as tip to substrate distance, applying voltage, flow rate of ink and velocity. The printed lines were dried at 200 degrees C to get rid of solvent and finally heat-treated at 600 degrees C to burn out PVP and form

Chemical exposure levels in printing workers with cholangiocarcinoma (second report).

OBJECTIVE: In several Japanese printing plants, printing workers have suffered from cholangiocarcinoma. 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP) is considered to be a causative agent, and whether or not other chemicals also contribute to the development of this disease has not been conclusively determined. This study aimed to identify the chemicals used by seven printing workers who developed cholangiocarcinoma, as well as to estimate the levels of chemical exposure among them. METHODS: Information was obtained from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan, to identify chemicals used by printin

Postinfarct VSD management using 3D computer printing assisted percutaneous closure.

Postinfarct VSD (PIVSD) carries a grim prognosis. The mainstay of management has been surgical repair. The advent of septal occluder devices has offered an attractive alternative to surgical repair. Most PIVSD have serpiginous tracts with necrotic tissue, which makes assessing the defect challenging. 3D computer printing has become useful in preprocedure planning of complex surgical procedures in multiple subspecialties.

3D printing of rat salivary glands: The submandibular-sublingual complex.

The morphology and the functionality of the murid glandular complex, composed of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands (SSC), were the object of several studies conducted mainly using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using a 4.7 T scanner and a manganese-based contrast agent, we improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the SSC relating to the surrounding anatomical structures allowing to obtain high-contrast 3D images of the SSC. In the last few years, the large development in resin melting techniques opened the way for printing 3D objects starting from a 3D stack of images. Here, we

Laser-Printing of Dynamic Colorful-Patterns Activated by Pure-Water.

Traditional printing technologies rely heavily on chemical dyes and organic reagents, posing significant environmental risks and resource sustainability challenges. Although bio-inspired structural colors offer a promising alternative, efficiently and conveniently achieving high-resolution, reversible, and eco-friendly patterning of dynamic optical content remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a scalable and sustainable color-printing strategy that employs pure water to activate dynamic patterns within laser-programmed cholesteric liquid crystal networks (CLCNs). By leveraging laser

High-throughput printing of functionally gradient material from self-propagation.

While combinatorial deposition techniques have accelerated the screening and understanding of materials, the creation of multi-material integration and gradient libraries is limited by mixing and distribution challenges. Here we show arbitrarily formable 3D-printable precursor materials, which are precisely formulated with their compositions by high-throughput techniques to achieve multiple degrees of freedom, efficiently realizing multi-scale, multi-component, and high-throughput printing. Meanwhile, a highly adaptive self-propagating-energy deposition technique based on a redox reaction betw
