[Assessment of anxiety, pain and its management in prenatal diagnosis procedures].

UNLABELLED: Invasive prenatal diagnosis procedures are numerous and more or less painful and stressful. The purpose of this study was to investigate maternal perception of both anxiety and pain before and after amniocentesis (AC) or transabdominal chorionic villus sampling (CVS), to determine factors associated with pain and anxiety, and to evaluate the pain support. This is a prospective study evaluating the professional practices at CHRU of Lille between March and May 2009 with 132 AC and 22 CVS by aspiration. An original questionnaire has been elaborated in three parts: the first one fulfil

Vulvar pain after spondylosyndesis procedure: a presentation of 2 cases.

Vulvar pain can be a difficult and frustrating problem for patients and practitioners. Often, no specific etiology can be determined for these symptoms. Treatment can be long and difficult as well.Spondylosyndesis is a common surgical procedure where the vertebrae are fused to decrease motion. There are several indications for this procedure. We report 2 patients who developed vulvar pain postoperatively after a spondylosyndesis procedure. Neither patient had a history of vulvar pain before their procedure. Of note, both patients had had a previous spondylosyndesis procedure in the past.Damage

Destructive procedures for the treatment of nonmalignant pain: a structured literature review.

OBJECT: Nonmalignant pain has been treated in the past century with ablative, or more appropriately, destructive procedures. Although individual outcomes for these procedures have previously been described in the literature, to the authors' knowledge this is the first comprehensive and systematic review on this topic. METHODS: A US National Library of Medicine PubMed search was conducted for the following ablative procedures: cingulotomy, cordotomy, DREZ (also input as dorsal root entry zone), ganglionectomy, mesencephalotomy, myelotomy, neurotomy, rhizotomy, sympathectomy, thalamotomy, and t

Dorsal root entry zone procedure and other surgeries for pain.

Pain is a very common symptom that often serves a protective function. It is typically treated medically. When pain becomes chronic and intractable, it no longer serves a protective function and often requires more aggressive forms of treatment. Many types of surgeries can be performed for the management of pain. These surgeries can involve ablation (destruction) or augmentation (stimulation or facilitation) of some part of the nervous system. In many of these surgeries, neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring (NIOM) is not needed, however, in others neuromonitoring serves a mapping and mon

Evaluation and Interventional Management of Pain After Vertebral Augmentation Procedures.

INTRODUCTION: A small subset of patients who underwent successful vertebral compression fracture (VCF) augmentation procedures may develop subsequent pain requiring spinal injections. In a retrospective analysis, we determined whether the pain was related to the original fracture site or to another area within the lumbar or thoracic spine. The pain occurred either at the same/adjacent level and/or non-adjacent level as the VCF. Interventional treatments primarily targeted the facet joints, specifically in the form of facet joint blocks and/or radiofrequency ablation to the medial branches. The

Pain management following the Nuss procedure: a survey of practice and review.

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum is the most common congenital chest wall deformity. The Nuss procedure is frequently used for surgical correction and this technique has been associated with severe and prolonged post-operative pain. At the present time, the optimal analgesic strategy for managing patients following this procedure has not been determined. METHODS: A web-based survey was sent to representatives from 108 primarily pediatric hospitals in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. One individual per institution was contacted to complete the survey on behalf of their department. RESUL

The trigeminal tract and nucleus procedures in treatment of atypical facial pain.

BACKGROUND: Atypical facial pain (AFP) is a throbbing pain situated deep in the eye and malar region, often radiating to the ear, neck, and shoulders. The pain generally is not within any dermatomal or anatomical boundaries. Atypical facial pain is distinct from trigeminal neuralgia and its variants. Therefore, the treatment of AFP should be specified. There is also no consensus in the treatment of AFP. Two different treatment procedures on the trigeminal tract and nucleus in a series of cases with AFP are presented. METHODS: Between 1989 and 2005, 17 patients with AFP, in whom previous thera

Pain during the TVT procedure performed under local anesthesia.

The aim of this study was to identify patients' reactions to pain during the TVT procedure performed under local anesthesia and to consider whether this is acceptable;to see how many patients under 70 years of age could be discharged from hospital on the day of operation; and to estimate the rate of complications. This was a prospective descriptive study of 110 unselected women operated upon with TVT plasty for urinary stress incontinence under local anesthesia. The patients all received the same oral and written information, care and advice for the perioperative period. A 100 mm non-hatched V

Percutaneous vertebroplasty: a bone cement procedure for spinal pain relief.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV), a procedure where bone cement is injected into a partially collapsed vertebral body, is used to relieve pain and provide mechanical stability in cases of osteoporosis or tumour infiltration. PV provided rapid pain relief and increased mobility in most patients according to the results from 15 uncontrolled studies in 882 persons where over 1,500 vertebrae were treated. Serious complications from bone cement leaks and adjacent vertebral fractures were rare. Despite the increasing use of PV there are no controlled prospective studies on safety and efficacy with l

Pharmacological management of pain and anxiety during emergency procedures in children.

Painful procedures are frequently required during treatment of children in the emergency department and are very stressful for the children, their parents and healthcare providers. Pharmacological methods to safely provide almost painless local anaesthesia, analgesia and anxiolysis have been increasingly studied in children. With knowledge of these methods, and patience, the emergency care provider can greatly reduce the distress often associated with emergency care of children. Topical local anaesthetics such as LET [lidocaine (lignocaine), epinephrine (adrenaline), tetracaine] or buffered li

Chest pain after coronary interventional procedures. Incidence and pathophysiology.

Chest pain following successful percutaneous coronary interventions is a common problem. Although the development of chest pain after coronary interventions may be of benign character, it is disturbing to patients, relatives and hospital staff. Such pain may be indicative of acute coronary artery closure, coronary artery spasm or myocardial infarction, but may also simply reflect local coronary artery trauma. The distinction between these causes of chest pain is crucial in selecting optimal care. Management of these patients may involve repeat coronary angiography and additional intervention.

Statistical analysis plan for the Petal trial: the effects of parental touch on relieving acute procedural pain in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Infants undergo multiple clinically-required painful procedures during their time in hospital, and there is an increasing desire from both parents and clinical staff to have parents directly involved in their newborn's pain relief. To avoid biases due to selective analysis and reporting, a clinical trial's statistical analysis plan (SAP) should be finalised and registered prior to dataset lock and unblinding. Here, we outline the SAP for the Petal trial, which was registered on the ISRCTN registry prior to dataset lock and unblinding. METHODS: The Petal trial is a multicentre, ind

A blinded randomised placebo-controlled trial investigating the efficacy of morphine analgesia for procedural pain in infants: Trial protocol.

Infant pain has both immediate and long-term negative consequences, yet in clinical practice it is often undertreated. To date, few pain-relieving drugs have been tested in infants. Morphine is a potent analgesic that provides effective pain relief in adults, but there is inconclusive evidence for its effectiveness in infants. The purpose of this study is to establish whether oral morphine provides effective analgesia for procedural pain in infants. A blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-group randomized, phase II, clinical trial will be undertaken to determine whether morphine sulphate admin

Analgesic efficacy and safety of morphine in the Procedural Pain in Premature Infants (Poppi) study: randomised placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Infant pain has immediate and long-term effects but is undertreated because of a paucity of evidence-based analgesics. Although morphine is often used to sedate ventilated infants, its analgesic efficacy is unclear. We aimed to establish whether oral morphine could provide effective and safe analgesia in non-ventilated premature infants for acute procedural pain. METHODS: In this single-centre masked trial, 31 infants at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK, were randomly allocated using a web-based facility with a minimisation algorithm to either 100 μg/kg oral morphine sulpha
