Accommodative ciliary body and lens function in rhesus monkeys, I: normal lens, zonule and ciliary process configuration in the iridectomized eye.

PURPOSE: The underlying causes of presbyopia, and the functional relationship between the ciliary muscle and lens during aging are unclear. In the current study, these relationships were studied in rhesus monkeys, whose accommodative apparatus and age-related loss of accommodation are similar to those in humans. METHODS: Centripetal ciliary body and lens equator movements were measured during accommodation in 28 eyes of 21 rhesus monkeys (ages, 5.7-26 years) by goniovideography. Ultrasound biomicroscopy was performed in 21 eyes of 17 monkeys. Narrowing of the angle between the anterior aspect

Signal processing in brainstem auditory neurons which receive giant endings (calyces of Held) in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body of the cat.

In the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB), each principal neuron receives one large axonal ending (a calyx of Held) and many small endings. In this same region, microelectrode recordings show unusual 'unit' waveforms which have two components separated by about 0.5 ms. We show that the first component (C1) of such a waveform corresponds to a spike from the calyx of Held and that the second component (C2) corresponds to a spike from the MNTB principal neuron. There are two kinds of evidence for these correspondences. First, electrical stimulation of calyciferous axons in the contralate

Synthesis and composition of glycosaminoglycans by explant cultures of human ciliary body and ciliary processes in serum-containing and serum-free defined media.

Freshly isolated ciliary body explants and tips of ciliary processes derived from human eyes were cultured in serum-containing or serum-free defined medium. These cultures synthesized tissue-bound and medium-released ("excreted") glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), as evidenced by the incorporation of 14C-glucosamine and enzymatic characterization of these labelled GAGs (hyaluronic acid, heparan sulphate, chondroitin sulphate, dermatan sulphate). The GAG synthesis and excretion rate was enhanced by serum. It is suggested that ciliary epithelium performs this function of GAG synthesis also under in vivo

PROTEOSE INTOXICATIONS AND INJURY OF BODY PROTEIN : V. THE INCREASE IN NON-PROTEIN NITROGEN OF THE BLOOD IN ACUTE INFLAMMATORY PROCESSES AND ACUTE INTOXICATIONS.

Sterile abscess formation in the dog is accompanied by a large increase in output of urinary nitrogen and also by a small but definite increase in the blood non-protein nitrogen. All this nitrogenous material of course is derived from body protein injury and autolysis. Septic inflammation in the dog (pleurisy, pneumonia, peritonitis, etc.) likewise shows a distinct rise in the blood non-protein nitrogen. This rise is not often so great as that frequently observed in the intoxication of intestinal obstruction. Many acute infections in man (septicemia, peritonitis, pneumonia, etc.) show a defini

An alternative "Port"? Rationale and development process for POts Reprocessing Therapy (PORT), a brain-body therapy for postural tachycardic syndrome (POTS).

PURPOSE: Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a chronic disorder marked by excessive orthostatic tachycardia, without clear structural/organic (e.g., cardiovascular) etiology. Recent evidence suggests that persistent autonomic symptoms may be driven by threat-induced and central nervous system-maintained dysregulation, similar to centralized chronic pain disorders. This study describes the rationale and development process of a brain-body intervention-POts Reprocessing Therapy (PORT)-aimed at reducing orthostatic symptomatology by taking advantage of the brain's plasticity. METHODS: PORT w

How individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) process their own face: a quantitative and qualitative investigation based on an eye-tracking paradigm.

INTRODUCTION: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterised by repetitive behaviours and/or mental acts occurring in response to preoccupations with perceived flaws in physical appearance. Based on an eye-tracking paradigm, this study aimed to examine how individuals with BDD processed their own face. METHODS: Participants were 21 BDD patients, 19 obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and 21 healthy controls (HC), who were age-, sex-, and IQ-matched. Stimuli were photographs of participants' own faces as well as those from the Pictures of Facial Affect battery. Outcome measures were affect

The developmental effects of media-ideal internalization and self-objectification processes on adolescents' negative body-feelings, dietary restraint, and binge eating.

Despite accumulated experimental evidence of the negative effects of exposure to media-idealized images, the degree to which body image, and eating related disturbances are caused by media portrayals of gendered beauty ideals remains controversial. On the basis of the most up-to-date meta-analysis of experimental studies indicating that media-idealized images have the most harmful and substantial impact on vulnerable individuals regardless of gender (i.e., "internalizers" and "self-objectifiers"), the current longitudinal study examined the direct and mediated links posited in objectification

Ceramic-Processing Perspectives on Colloidal CIGS and CZTSSe Thin-Film Solar Absorbers: Green-Body Formation, Reactive Chalcogenization, and Defect Engineering.

Colloidal processing provides a scalable non-vacuum route for fabricating CIGS and CZTSSe thin-film absorbers, but nanoparticle-derived films should be treated as constrained particulate green bodies rather than as simple chemically deposited semiconductor layers. This review reorganizes colloidal chalcogenide photovoltaics using ceramic-processing concepts: ink dispersion, green-body packing, capillary drying stress, ligand burnout, constrained shrinkage, reactive chalcogenization, transient liquid-assisted coarsening, secondary-phase control, defect chemistry, and interface reactions. The healing process of vertebral body fracture in Wistar rats: creation of an animal model and demonstration of the impact of anterolateral vascularization disruption on bone healing.

BACKGROUND: Although recognition of avascular necrosis of the vertebral body in post-traumatic cases has increased, it remains underdiagnosed and is one of the most unpredictable and challenging complications in spinal trauma. Vertebral arterial supply may play a key role in fracture healing, yet this remains unproven and is not currently considered in treatment algorithms. Surgical decisions between preserving or replacing the vertebral body in burst fractures are difficult, mainly due to limited knowledge of the biological factors influencing bone repair. This study aims to demonstrate the i

Real-world Decision-making Process for Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy Versus Minimally Invasive Surgery in Early-stage Lung Cancer Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To generate a prediction model for the selection of treatment modality for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) are used in the local treatment of early-stage NSCLC. However, the selection of patients for either SBRT or MIS remains challenging due to the multitude of factors influencing the decision-making process. METHODS: We analyzed 1291 patients with clinical stage I NSCLC treated with intended MIS or SBRT from January 2020 to July 2023. A prediction model for selection for SBRT w

Systemic peptide mediated delivery of an siRNA targeting α-syn in the CNS ameliorates the neurodegenerative process in a transgenic model of Lewy body disease.

Neurodegenerative disorders of the aging population are characterized by progressive accumulation of neuronal proteins such as α-synuclein (α-syn) in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Amyloid ß (Aß) and Tau in Alzheimer's disease (AD) for which no treatments are currently available. The ability to regulate the expression at the gene transcription level would be beneficial for reducing the accumulation of these proteins or regulating expression levels of other genes in the CNS. Short interfering RNA molecules can bind specifically to target RNAs and deliver them for degradation. This approach has sh

A distinct form of adult polyglucosan body disease with massive involvement of central and peripheral neuronal processes and astrocytes: a report of four cases and a review of the occurrence of polyglucosan bodies in other conditions such as Lafora's disease and normal ageing.

We have described 4 patients with progressive lower and upper motor neuron deficits, marked sensory loss in the legs, 'neurogenic bladder', and, in 2 of the 4, dementia. Autopsy of two revealed a profusion of microscopic bodies resembling corpora amylacea or Lafora bodies, but restricted to processes of neurons and astrocytes. Similar (but especially large) bodies were seen within axons of sural nerves taken at biopsy from the other two patients. A general term--'polyglucosan body'--is introduced to refer to these structures in all the circumstances in which they may occur, such as in Lafora's
