Does speed of processing training improve everyday life functional activity in traumatic brain injury: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

This double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial evaluated Speed of Processing Training (SOPT) efficacy for improving everyday functioning in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Thirty-four participants with moderate to severe TBI completed either SOPT or placebo control treatment across 10 sessions over five weeks. Assessments at baseline, post-treatment, and six-month follow-up measured Timed Activities of Daily Living (TIADL) performance along with self-reported quality of life, self-efficacy, and depressive symptoms. Results revealed no significant differences between the SOPT and placebo

Glymphatic dysfunction mediates the influence of choroid plexus enlargement on information processing speed in patients with white matter hyperintensities.

Glymphatic dysfunction has been correlated with cognitive decline, with a higher choroid plexus volume (CPV) being linked to a slower glymphatic clearance rate. Nevertheless, the interplay between CPV, glymphatic function, and cognitive impairment in white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) has not yet been investigated. In this study, we performed neuropsychological assessment, T1-weighted three-dimensional (3D-T1) images, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a cohort of 206 WMHs subjects and 43 healthy controls (HCs) to further explore the relationship. The DTI analysis along the perivascular s

Seeing fast and slow: the influence of music-induced affective states and individual sensory sensitivity on visual processing speed.

There is a speed-accuracy trade-off in perception. The ability to quickly extract sensory information is critical for survival, while extended processing can improve our accuracy. It has been suggested that emotions can change our style of processing, but their influence on processing speed is not yet clear. In three experiments, combining online and laboratory studies with different emotion induction procedures, we investigated the influence of both affective states, manipulated with music, and individual traits in sensory-processing sensitivity on the ability to rapidly segregate two visual

A Novel Digital Digit-Symbol Substitution Test Measuring Processing Speed in Adults At Risk for Alzheimer Disease: Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing cognitive constructs affected by Alzheimer disease, such as processing speed (PS), is important to screen for potential disease and allow for early detection. Digital PS assessments have been developed to provide widespread, efficient cognitive testing, but all have been validated only based on the correlation between test scores. Best statistical practices dictate that concurrent validity should be assessed for agreement or equivalence rather than using correlation alone. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the concurrent validity of a novel digital PS assessment agai

Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor Interacts with White Matter Hyperintensities to Influence Processing Speed and Hippocampal Volume in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin that plays an important role in regulating synaptic activity and plasticity. OBJECTIVE: Given that type-2 diabetes (T2DM) increases the risk of cognitive decline, and studies have suggested lower BDNF levels may be a risk factor of diabetic neurovascular complications, we sought to investigate total white matter hyperintensities (WMH) as a moderator of the effect of BDNF on hippocampal volume and cognition. METHODS: Older adults without dementia from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (N = 454 including 49 wi

Slow Processing Speed and Sluggish Cognitive Tempo in Pediatric Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Evidence for Differentiation of Functional Correlates.

The association between slow processing speed and sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT), a phenotype described within attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) samples over the past decade, remains unclear. We examined whether SCT and processing speed predict different functional correlates within children and adolescents with ADHD. Participants were 193 clinically-referred youth meeting DSM ADHD criteria without comorbid conditions (mean age = 9.9 years, SD = 2.5; age range 6-16). The incremental utility of SCT and processing speed to predict (1) adaptive functioning and (2) academic achieveme

Neuropsychological functioning in military pesticide applicators from the Gulf War: Effects on information processing speed, attention and visual memory.

1991 Gulf War (GW) veterans continue to experience debilitating cognitive and mood problems more than two decades following their return from deployment. Suspected causes for these cognitive complaints include additive and/or synergistic effects of the varying combinations of exposures to chemicals in theater, including pesticides and pyridostigmine bromide (PB) pills. This study was undertaken to address one of the key recommendations of the US Department of Defense Environmental Exposure Report on Pesticides, which was to conduct an epidemiological study to further evaluate the role of neuro

The second face of blindness: processing speed deficits in the intact visual field after pre- and post-chiasmatic lesions.

PURPOSE: Damage along the visual pathway results in a visual field defect (scotoma), which retinotopically corresponds to the damaged neural tissue. Other parts of the visual field, processed by the uninjured tissue, are considered to be intact. However, perceptual deficits have been observed in the "intact" visual field, but these functional impairments are poorly understood. We now studied temporal processing deficits in the intact visual field of patients with either pre- or post-chiasmatic lesions to better understand the functional consequences of partial blindness. METHODS: Patients wit

Cognitive speed of processing and functional declines in older cancer survivors: an analysis of data from the ACTIVE trial.

It has been suggested that chemotherapy treatment for cancer may contribute to cognitive decline in older cancer survivors. This issue is particularly important given that subtle cognitive impairment, particularly in cognitive processing speed, can affect functional status and quality of life for older adults. Multivariate regression of data from a longitudinal randomized controlled trial of older adults revealed a trend towards decreased performance after cancer treatment with chemotherapy on several functional measures associated with processing speed (as compared with matched individuals wh

Reduced attentional capacity, but normal processing speed and shifting of attention in developmental dyslexia: evidence from a serial task.

We report the performance of a group of adult dyslexics and matched controls in an array-matching task where two strings of either consonants or symbols are presented side by side and have to be judged to be the same or different. The arrays may differ either in the order or identity of two adjacent characters. This task does not require naming - which has been argued to be the cause of dyslexics' difficulty in processing visual arrays - but, instead, has a strong serial component as demonstrated by the fact that, in both groups, Reaction times (RTs) increase monotonically with position of a m

Basic processes in reading: semantics affects speeded naming of high-frequency words in an alphabetic script.

Previous work on single-word naming in university-level readers has shown that semantic factors affect the naming of low frequency words both in an alphabetic script like English, which is often irregular in terms of the spelling-sound correspondences, and in the syllabic Japanese Kana script, in which the spelling-sound correspondences are consistent. The present experiment shows that a semantic factor (imageability) affects naming time to both low- and high-frequency words in an alphabetic script (Persian) when the word is opaque (vowels not specified) but not when it is transparent (vowels

Processing speed impairment after anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture assessed using the wechsler adult intelligence scale: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) commonly causes subtle, but functionally disabling, cognitive impairment. Although prior studies have emphasized the mechanisms of diffuse brain injury, the relationship between aneurysm location and domain-specific cognitive deficits remains unclear. Processing speed is a pivotal factor influencing post-SAH functional outcomes; however, it remains poorly understood, although it is known to depend on the integrity of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), located adjacent to the anterior communicating artery (Acom). This study investigated whether co-rup

The interplay between polygenic score for tumor necrosis factor-α, brain structural connectivity, and processing speed in major depression.

Reduced processing speed is a core deficit in major depressive disorder (MDD) and has been linked to altered structural brain network connectivity. Ample evidence highlights the involvement of genetic-immunological processes in MDD and specific depressive symptoms. Here, we extended these findings by examining associations between polygenic scores for tumor necrosis factor-α blood levels (TNF-α PGS), structural brain connectivity, and processing speed in a large sample of MDD patients. Processing speed performance of n = 284 acutely depressed, n = 177 partially and n = 198 fully remitted patie
