Development and validation of the anxious behaviors questionnaire (ABQ) in older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Research on GAD in older adults-and the overt behaviors that may contribute to it-remains limited. Evaluating behaviors with age-appropriate tools may improve GAD diagnosis in older adults. This paper describes the development and psychometric evaluation of a self-report measure of behaviors associated with GAD: the Anxious Behaviors Questionnaire (ABQ). Study 1 explored the factor structure using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Study 2 evaluated the resulting structure using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and examined additional psychometric properties. METHODS: In Study 1

Validation of the Swedish Version of the Occupational Anxiety Inventory.

This study aimed to validate a Swedish version of the Occupational Anxiety Inventory (OCAI), a self-report instrument designed to assess anxiety symptoms that individuals specifically attribute to their work. A sample of 499 Swedish workers was recruited. We investigated the OCAI's dimensionality, total score reliability, scalability, criterion validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Measurement invariance was examined using data from the original validation study of the instrument. Bifactor exploratory structural equation modelling indicated that the Swedish version of the O

Exploratory Longitudinal Associations Between SAPs and Individual and Contextual Variables: Toward the Development of Educational Guidelines.

School attendance problems (SAPs) are a widespread phenomenon with significant academic, psychological, social, and relational consequences. These issues are particularly prevalent among adolescents worldwide and require careful examination of the individual and contextual factors associated with their onset and persistence to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies. Grounded in an ecological and systemic framework of school absenteeism, this longitudinal study examined the reciprocal associations between SAPs, learned helplessness, mastery orientation, academic procrastinatio

The cognitive anchor system: a structural model of self, task selection, and latent intention in human cognition.

INTRODUCTION: Human cognition requires both stability and flexibility: individuals maintain a continuous sense of self while shifting among tasks, intentions, and contexts. Existing theories explain information processing, prediction, attention, and control, but they leave under-specified the structural layer that determines what cognition is currently organized around. METHODS: This theoretical paper develops the Cognitive Anchor System, a structural framework that distinguishes among the self anchor, the task anchor, and the anchor pool. The model is compared with major theories of attentio

Steeping in how "shut up and color" mindset manifests: Semantic analysis of open-ended responses for barriers to support seeking among veterans.

Despite the long use of surveys in veterans' needs assessments, a disconnect persists between the veterans' needs and the available services. This study employs a hermeneutical framework to semantically analyze open-ended responses and investigate how veterans' perceptions of service barriers are formed. We analyzed 3,325 open-ended responses specifying their perceived barriers in Texas Veterans Needs Survey data from 2023 (n = 16,733). Our analysis revealed that the hurdles stem from the combination of (1) obedience to authority, (2) covert mental health challenges, (3) hopelessness, and (4)

Gastric Trichobezoars in Children: Surgical Overview.

BACKGROUND: Development of trichobezoars in children is primarily a psychiatric issue more than a pediatric surgical ailment. A definite history of trichotillomania and trichophagia may or may not be elicited. Surgical removal is required in patients presenting with huge bezoars. Psychiatric follow-up is of utmost importance to avoid recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of children who were diagnosed and managed for the presence of gastric trichobezoars were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Five children presented over past 15 years (2000-2015) with varied presentations ranging from

Cryptococcal meningoencephalitis presenting with an unusual magnetic resonance imaging appearance--case report.

A 61-year-old female with a past history of gastric cancer presented with altered mental status, a few seizures, and low-grade fever. Lumbar puncture revealed elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, lymphocytic pleocytosis, elevated protein level, remarkably decreased glucose level, and presence of cryptococcal antigen. Cryptococcus neoformans was identified by India ink staining and culture of CSF. The patient was given antifungal agents intravenously and intrathecally. CSF findings improved and C. neoformans could not be detected in CSF one month after the onset. Cerebral sulcal hyperin

Ok Google: Using virtual assistants for data collection in psychological and behavioral research.

Because of the increasing popularity of voice-controlled virtual assistants, such as Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant, they should be considered a new medium for psychological and behavioral research. We developed Survey Mate, an extension of Google Assistant, and conducted two studies to analyze the reliability and validity of data collected through this medium. In the first study, we assessed validated procrastination and shyness scales as well as social desirability indicators for both the virtual assistant and an online questionnaire. The results revealed comparable internal consistency

Efficacy of Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for reducing perfectionistic strivings in the Republic of Korea: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perfectionistic strivings characterized by excessively high standards, fears of mistakes, and critical self-evaluations can lead to avoidance, worry, procrastination, and self-criticism, negatively impacting mental health. Since individuals with perfectionism are less likely to seek face-to-face therapy, internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) may improve accessibility. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the effectiveness of an ICBT program specifically designed to reduce perfectionistic strivings. METHODS: A total of 101 participants with significant perfectionism were

Impaired Learning From Errors and Punishments and Maladaptive Avoidance-General Mechanisms Underlying Self-Regulation Disorders?

Self-regulation (SR) is an important human function that relates to quality of life in multiple domains including mental health. Previous studies have found important correlates of low SR including impulsivity and poor emotional regulation; however, underpinnings of low SR are incompletely understood. Individuals low in SR frequently engage in maladaptive behaviors (substance abuse, procrastination, etc.) despite negative consequences. This phenomenon suggests that impaired learning from errors and punishments may be important mechanisms underlying low SR. Consistently, previous studies observ

It will be worth it, in the end: a model of naturalistic intertemporal choice.

Intertemporal choices, which involve consequences spread over time, often display a bias toward short-term rewards, which was recognized in ancient Greek philosophy as "akrasia." This bias is nowadays often modelled via hyperbolic discounting models, where intertemporal choice failings are due to an inherently irrational way of trading-off present and future rewards. Hyperbolic discounting models lead to precommitment as a suggested strategy to avoid short-term rewards, as in the Greek story of Odysseus and the sirens. We contrastingly propose a boundedly rational model of naturalistic interte

The Effects of Vitamin Therapy on ASD and ADHD: A Narrative Review.

The effects of a sufficient amount of vitamins and nutrients on the proper function of the nervous system have always been regarded by scientists. In recent years, many studies have been done on controlling or improving the symptoms of neurological and behavioral disorders created by changes in the level of vitamins and other nutrition, such as omega-3 and iron supplements. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that disrupts individual communication, especially in social interactions. Its symptoms include anxiety, violence, depression, self-injury, trouble with social

Ankle joint re-balancing in the management of ankle fracture malunion using fibular lengthening: prospective clinical-radiological results at mid-term follow-up.

PURPOSE: An unsatisfactory reduction and internal fixation of an ankle fracture can result in an alteration of the anatomical axes and distribution of the load on the ankle, with consequent development of chronic pain and articular degeneration. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of the articular re-balancing with realignment and lengthening of the fibula in case of malunited distal fibular fractures. METHODS: A review of prospectively collected data was performed for all patients with a diagnosis of malunion of the fibula and underwent ankle joint re-balancing with fibular leng

Changing to endovenous treatment for varicose veins: how much more evidence is needed?

Surgical ligation and stripping of varicose veins has been the accepted treatment for almost a century but within the last decade this has been challenged by endovenous thermal and chemical ablation methods. Surgery is not without significant complications including paraesthesia and has reflux recurrence rates of up to 54% at five years, even though it has been shown to provide significant health-related quality of life benefits cost-effectively. Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation and radiofrequency ablation are all consistently proving to be at least as beneficial

Predicting Anxiety in Secondary School Teachers: A Transdiagnostic Approach.

(1) Background: Teacher mental health is a growing concern due to the high emotional and professional demands of teaching. Anxiety is particularly prevalent among teachers, yet it is often conceptualized as a unitary construct, overlooking its multidimensional nature. This study examined the role of transdiagnostic psychological variables and sociodemographic factors as predictors of different dimensions of anxiety (physical, cognitive, and social) in secondary school teachers. (2) Methods: A total of 444 Spanish secondary school teachers (Mage = 41.76, SD = 10.80; 50% women) participated. Dat
