Linking environmental and health care databases: assessing the health effects of environmental pollutants.

The assessment of pollutant effects on health status requires the mergence and analysis of two different databases: pollution measurements and health care information. This paper compares two subsets of these data: Ohio Environmental Protection Agency data on ambient air pollutants and Ohio Medicare data on respiratory diseases. Small area analysis was performed to assess statewide variations in hospital admission rates for respiratory diseases. The ambient air pollutant levels for each small area were compared to the variations in respiratory disease rates. Five groups of diseases correlated

Expert-informed and stakeholder-reviewed interprofessional triage model for primary care practices: a mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: To date, traditional primary care practices are often organized around the capacities of one or more physicians. New models of primary care practices involving other health professionals such as advanced practice nurses (APNs) require modified triage models for more adequate patient allocation. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, a modified triage model was developed, informed by experts and reviewed by stakeholders. METHODS: A convergent mixed-method design with four phases was employed. The study was conducted in Swiss primary care practices. Readiness for change of health professionals work

Medicolegal affairs. International Academy of Cytology Task Force summary. Diagnostic Cytology Towards the 21st Century: An International Expert Conference and Tutorial.

ISSUES: Increasing litigation over alleged false negative cervical cytologic (CC) smears threatens the viability of this test for cervical cancer detection. The problem appears to be largely American but is beginning to appear in some other countries. In the vast majority of cases there is either a settlement or jury verdict for the plaintiff based largely on the testimony of expert witnesses. Cases are judged on an individual basis without significant consideration of the general performance of the CC smear in laboratories operating in compliance with a wide array of laboratory regulations an

Cannabinoid Therapy in Athletics: A Review of Current Cannabis Research to Evaluate Potential Real-World Cannabinoid Applications in Sport.

The increasing legalization of Cannabis sativa plant products has sparked growing interest in their therapeutic applications. Prohibition laws established in 1937 hindered formal research on cannabis, a plant with cultural and medicinal roots dating back to 2700 BC in Chinese history. Despite regulatory hurdles, published research on cannabis has emerged; yet elite athletes remain an underrepresented population in these studies. Athletes, known for exploring diverse substances to optimize performance, are drawn to the potential benefits of cannabinoid therapy, with anecdotal reports suggesting

BSR Spondyloarthritis Course, 27 February 2020. Spondyloarthritis: pathogenesis, diagnosis and management.

High-quality continuous medical education is essential to maintain excellence in health-care delivery, upskilling professionals and improving patient outcomes. This is particularly relevant when addressing rare disease groups, such as the spondyloarthritides, a group of heterogeneous inflammatory conditions that affect joints and other organs, such as the skin, bowel and eye. Professional bodies, such as the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR), are well placed to deliver this type of education. In 2020, the BSR ran a dedicated SpA course aimed at rheumatology health-care professionals wishi

Fewer US Adolescents Playing Football and Public Health: A Review of Measures to Improve Safety and an Analysis of Gaps in the Literature.

Physical activity during adolescence is associated with positive health outcomes, yet only 26% of US middle and high school students report daily physical activity. Moreover, the number of high school students playing a sport is declining, with the largest decline in football. One reason for this decline in playing football may be increased attention to the risk of head injury. For public health, the decline is alarming because football offers a physical activity opportunity for millions of young people every year. In response, efforts have been made to institute measures to enhance the safety

Applying systematic review search methods to the grey literature: a review of education and training courses on breastfeeding support for health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Currently, lactation training courses aimed at health professionals are important for informing and supporting mothers who are breastfeeding. In this review, we seek to analyze similarities and/or variations in course content, modes of delivery, costs, teaching style and learning strategies among courses. To our knowledge, a review of lactation training courses available worldwide is lacking. Thus, the aim of this review is to describe course models aimed at training health professionals in lactation support for mothers. METHODS: Through searching grey literature, training courses

Quality assurance in ambulatory nutritional care. II. Field testing of criteria.

Quality assurance criteria developed for six target populations of pregnant women and obese infants, children, and adolescents were field tested in 102 ambulatory care settings to determine whether they were relevant, understandable, measurable, behavioral, and achievable. Field testing identified specific problems in ambulatory nutritional care settings related to documentation and feasibility of using patient care records to provide data to assess quality of care and to determine how statements were formulated. Field test results were used to rewrite the criteria. Findings are consistent wit
