DNA methylation program in developing hippocampus and its alteration by alcohol.

During hippocampal development, the Cornus Ammonis (CA) and the dentate gyrus (DG) undergo waves of neurogenesis and neuronal migration and maturation independently. This stage is widely known to be vulnerable to environmental stresses, but its underlying mechanism is unclear. Alcohol exposure has been shown to alter the expression of genes that regulate the fate, survival, migration and differentiation of pyramidal and granule cells. Undermining this process might compromise hippocampal development underlying the learning and memory deficits known in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). W

Developing a pediatric endovascular thrombolysis program: a single-center experience.

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is being increasingly recognized as a significant issue in children. Despite the low incidence of DVT, the risks of pulmonary embolism and death in children are significant. Post-thrombotic syndrome, a syndrome of chronic venous insufficiency, can have long-term adverse consequences in children and adolescents. Adult studies have shown that catheter-directed therapy can reduce the incidence of post-thrombotic syndrome. Safety of catheter-directed therapy in adolescents has also been demonstrated. These reasons compelled us to institute a pediatric endovascular thro

A review of the Ponseti method and development of an infant clubfoot program in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: The Feet for Walking clubfoot project from Australia formally introduced the Ponseti technique in Vietnam in 2004 and is based at the Da Nang Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Centre in central Vietnam. METHODS: We provide an initial overview of the management of infant clubfoot deformity using the nonsurgical Ponseti method. RESULTS: Early indicators of the outcome of implementing this clubfoot project are largely positive but also require ongoing review. Further analyses of the use of the Ponseti method (or obstacles preventing the same) following training of personnel is underway.

The Special Sauce: Lessons in Leadership Development from the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program.

In 2014 the Cambia Health Foundation launched the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program to promote, support, grow, and nurture a new generation of leaders in palliative care. As the program winds down after recruiting 108 scholars comprised of 10 cohorts of 10-12 professionals from across disciplines in our field, the members of its advisory board share the "secret sauce," three aspects of the program that we believe were the keys to success-recruit great people, provide strong program leadership and mentorship, and create and sustain a supportive, engaged community-to guide future initiatives i

Development of an Evidence-based Violence Rehabilitation Program for Offenders With Intellectual Disability.

A review of the current literature on evidence-based violence prevention programs developed for individuals with an intellectual disability (ID) reveals a paucity of direct evidence for this population. In addition, the existing offence-specific programs are primarily grounded in adapted cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) programs designed for the mainstream offender population, which may not be suitable for offenders with co-morbid mental health and personality disorders. The current paper discusses the development of a violence rehabilitation program for offenders with an ID. The focus of the

Trauma-Informed Training for Veterans Treatment Court Professionals: Program Development and Initial Feedback.

BACKGROUND: Justice-involved veterans demonstrate greater mental health and psychosocial needs relative to justice-involved nonveterans and veterans without a criminal history. Veterans treatment courts (VTCs) serve as an alternative to incarceration for veterans whose criminogenic risk is believed to be related to mental health symptoms. Despite observed improvements in functioning and recidivism risk following successful VTC completion, little is known about factors that impede engagement with VTCs. This paper describes a trauma-informed training program that included psychoeducation, skills

Development of a Physical Therapy-Based Exercise Program for Adults with Down Syndrome.

In adults with Down syndrome, the combination of low physical activity and fitness levels and the high prevalence of musculoskeletal co-morbidities stresses the need for specialized exercise programs. The goal of this research study was to develop a specialized exercise program for individuals with Down syndrome using the physical therapy approach of a systems review as the foundation. We first conducted an overview of the literature on co-morbidities in adults with Down syndrome using the systems review method to categorize these findings. We extracted recommendations for content and delivery

Disruption of GMNC-MCIDAS multiciliogenesis program is critical in choroid plexus carcinoma development.

Multiciliated cells (MCCs) in the brain reside in the ependyma and the choroid plexus (CP) epithelia. The CP secretes cerebrospinal fluid that circulates within the ventricular system, driven by ependymal cilia movement. Tumors of the CP are rare primary brain neoplasms mostly found in children. CP tumors exist in three forms: CP papilloma (CPP), atypical CPP, and CP carcinoma (CPC). Though CPP and atypical CPP are generally benign and can be resolved by surgery, CPC is a particularly aggressive and little understood cancer with a poor survival rate and a tendency for recurrence and metastasis

Identification of a KLF5-dependent program and drug development for skeletal muscle atrophy.

Skeletal muscle atrophy is caused by various conditions, including aging, disuse related to a sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity, and cachexia. Our insufficient understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying muscle atrophy limits the targets for the development of effective pharmacologic treatments and preventions. Here, we identified Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5), a zinc-finger transcription factor, as a key mediator of the early muscle atrophy program. KLF5 was up-regulated in atrophying myotubes as an early response to dexamethasone or simulated microgravity in vitro. Ske

Web-Based Prescription Opioid Abuse Prevention for Adolescents: Program Development and Formative Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The unprecedented number of youths engaged in nonmedical use of prescription opioids (POs), as well as the myriad negative consequences of such misuse, emphasizes the importance of prevention efforts targeting this public health crisis. Although there are several science-based, interactive drug abuse prevention programs focused on preventing the use of nonprescription drugs in youths, to our knowledge, there are no science-based interactive programs that focus on the prevention of PO abuse among adolescents. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and conduct a formative e

The Development and Feasibility Outcomes of a Youth Suicide Prevention Intensive Outpatient Program.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide is a leading cause of death in adolescents worldwide. There is an absence of effective and low cost treatment strategies for this growing public health problem. Current practice consists of brief hospitalization of acutely suicidal youth, but many get inadequate follow-up treatment. There are few alternatives to individual outpatient services offered at too low an intensity for an acutely distressed population. This paper describes the development, feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary clinical outcomes of an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for suicidal adolescents

Organ damage mitigation with the Baskent Sickle Cell Medical Care Development Program (BASCARE).

The Eastern Mediterranean is among the regions where sickle cell disease (SCD) is common. The morbidity and mortality of this disease can be postponed to adulthood through therapies implemented in childhood. The present study focuses on the organ damage-reducing effects of the Baskent Sickle Cell Medical Care Development Program (BASCARE), which was developed by a team who lives in this region and has approximately 25 years of experience. The deliverables of the program included the development of an electronic health recording system (PRANA) and electronic vaccination system; the use of low c

The European AntibotABE Framework Program and Its Update: Development of Innovative Botulinum Antibodies.

The goal of the AntiBotABE Program was the development of recombinant antibodies that neutralize botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) A, B and E. These serotypes are lethal and responsible for most human botulinum cases. To improve therapeutic efficacy, the heavy and light chains (HC and LC) of the three BoNT serotypes were targeted to achieve a synergistic effect (oligoclonal antibodies). For antibody isolation, macaques were immunized with the recombinant and non-toxic BoNT/A, B or E, HC or LC, followed by the generation of immune phage-display libraries. Antibodies were selected from these librarie
