Grief: A Brief History of Research on How Body, Mind, and Brain Adapt.

OBJECTIVE: Using an integrative view of psychology, neuroscience, immunology, and psychophysiology, the present review of literature curates the findings that have had an impact on the field of bereavement research and shaped its development. METHODS: Beginning with pivotal systematic descriptions of medical and psychological responses to the death of a loved one by Lindemann in the mid-1940s, this selective review integrates findings in bereavement research from studies that investigate medical outcomes after loss, their psychological predictors, and biopsychosocial mechanisms. RESULTS: Mor

When Memories Keep Grief Alive: A Dynamic Model of Memory Characteristics and Prolonged Grief.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a condition marked by sustained separation distress. Although cognitive models suggest that memory processes are critical in PGD, the specific characteristics of loss-related memories have received limited longitudinal attention. This study examined how loss-related memory characteristics and prolonged grief symptoms (PGS) influence each other over the first 18 months of bereavement. METHOD: A community sample of 275 bereaved adults (79% women, Mage = 46.4) completed assessments of PGS and the Oxford Grief-Memory Characteristics Scale at three t

Exploring suicide bereavement experiences and support needs among muslims and individuals with an Islamic cultural background living in Australia.

Suicide loss may increase the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidality. Within the Muslim community, suicide is highly stigmatized, reducing social support and increasing the risk of prolonged grief symptoms. Given the scarcity of research with this population, this qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of suicide bereavement in a purposive sample of people with Islamic backgrounds in Australia (N = 9). Reflexive thematic analysis generated five themes: 1) grieving and death perspectives, 2) ripple effect of suicide bereavement, 3) the social image of grief after suic

Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Bereavement: A Systematized Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have shown promising effects across diverse areas of psychiatry, yet their specific role in bereavement remains insufficiently synthesized. Bereavement is a universal but heterogeneous process, with a minority of individuals at risk of developing prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Understanding the potential benefits of MBIs in this context is crucial for informing clinical practice. METHODS: Following the methodological framework of systematized narrative reviews, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across major databases

Desire thinking as a cognitive mechanism of yearning after bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Yearning is the hallmark of grief and prolonged grief disorder, but its psychological underpinnings are poorly understood. We aimed to address this by building on the phenomenological similarities with craving and investigating the role of desire thinking, a voluntary cognitive process central to activating craving. OBJECTIVE: Determining the factorial and psychometric properties of the Oxford Grief Desire Thinking scale (OG-DT) and testing whether desire thinking dimensions prospectively predict proximity-seeking, and whether this association is mediated by subsequent yearning.

The desirability of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) clinician-led bereavement screening and support program for family members of ICU Decedents (ICU Bereave).

PURPOSE: Many bereaved family members (FMs) of intensive care unit decedents experience symptoms of complicated grief (CG) or social distress, but there is no standard screening or follow-up for these individuals. We determined the desirability and need for an intensive care unit-based bereavement screening and support program for these FMs. METHODS: We surveyed bereaved FMs to measure symptoms of CG, prolonged grief disorder, and social difficulties and the desire for support; and staff physicians and nurses at 2 teaching hospitals in Toronto, Canada, to determine comfort and interest in pro

Rumination moderates the role of meaning in the development of prolonged grief symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: To address the etiology of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) by examining whether rumination moderates the role of meaning-making in mediating the impact of PGD risk factors. METHOD: A survey assessing PGD risk factors (low social support, insecure attachment, violent loss, neuroticism, and loss of a spouse), meaning, and rumination was administered 2-12 months postloss among adults across North America and Europe (mean age = 44.3, 71.9% female). At a 7-10 months follow-up, symptoms of PGD were assessed (n = 171). RESULTS: When measuring meaning with the Grief and Meaning Reconstruct

The impact of adolescent suicide on siblings and parents: a longitudinal follow-up.

The psychiatric sequelae of loss of a family member to suicide were evaluated in parents and siblings of adolescent suicide victims and controls, who were followed up to 3 years after the suicide. Siblings did not show an increased risk for the development of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other conditions over the course of follow-up, despite showing a prolonged elevated level of grief symptomatology. Mothers showed an increased rate of recurrence of depression over follow-up, whereas fathers did not show an increased incidence of disorder compared to fathers of controls

Perceived Unexpectedness of Death and PTSD Among Family Members of Intensive Care Patients With COVID-19 or Not.

BACKGROUND: Patient death caused by COVID-19 in an intensive care unit (ICU) may be a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in family members. OBJECTIVE: To determine if bereaved family members of ICU patients with COVID-19 were more likely than those of patients without COVID-19 to experience PTSD and prolonged grief disorder and find the death unexpected. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey study with embedded qualitative analysis conducted during the Omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, family members of ICU patients at an academic medical center were enrolled at leas

A Combined Approach to Understanding Grief: Integration of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping With Bereavement (DPM).

The Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM) are two central models in the field of thanatology, offering theoretical frameworks for understanding how individuals cope with loss. While the two models share several fundamental principles - most notably the conceptualization of grief as a bidimensional process involving the interplay between mourning and functional adaptation to life after loss - they differ in their components, underlying theoretical assumptions, and clinical emphases, yielding complementary strengths that together can en

Support from New York City's office of chief medical examiner for people bereaved by drug poisoning: development and implementation of the family support program.

Bereavement from loss related to drug poisoning, the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, is associated with elevated risk for prolonged grief disorder, substance use, and poor mental health outcomes. Despite this, few interventions specifically target survivors of overdose loss. The Family Support Program (FSP) is a novel, social worker-delivered bereavement support service provided by the Drug Intelligence and Intervention Group of the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner for family, friends, and other close social network members bereaved by drug poisoning.

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders and functional impairment after loss of a family member: a longitudinal study after the 2004 Tsunami.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement following disasters is a devastating experience for family members. The aim of this study was to examine the long-term mental health effects of losing a loved one in a natural disaster. METHODS: Ninety-four Norwegians aged 18-80 years who lost close family members in the 2004 Southeast Asian tsunami were evaluated 2 and 6 years after the disaster. The participants were either staying in an affected area at the time of the disaster (i.e., directly exposed) or not (i.e., not directly exposed). The prevalence of psychiatric disorders was assessed by the MINI International

Persistent complex bereavement disorder: clinical utility and classification of the category proposed for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition.

AIM: Persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD) was proposed as a bereavement-related clinical category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, which included the disorder among conditions for further study. This is an independent clinical category in which intense yearning for the deceased continues for at least 12 months. However, the diagnostic features are still inconclusive. We suggest a variation of PCBD for making category from our clinical experiences. METHOD: We presented two representative case studies in which grief caused by bereavement was o

The Grief of Mothers After the Sudden Unexpected Death of Their Infants.

UNLABELLED: : media-1vid110.1542/5741323271001PEDS-VA_2017-3651Video Abstract BACKGROUND: The loss of a child is associated with elevated grief severity, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of postneonatal mortality in the United States. The diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has gained broader acceptance and use. Little is known about PGD in mothers after SIDS. METHODS: Between May 2013 and July 2016, we assessed 49 SIDS-bereaved mothers living in informal settlements near Cape Town, South Africa, and on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and 359 SIDS-bereave

Unrecognized grief - Prevalence and comorbidity of prolonged grief among refugees in Sweden.

Refugees often experience multiple losses. Despite this, and even though the loss is often due to unnatural causes and violent killings, the presence of Prolonged Grief (PG) among refugees may be obscured by other diagnoses such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the prevalence of PG and its comorbidity with depression and PTSD among 679 adult refugees in Sweden. Results showed that 401 (59.06 %) individuals had lost someone close to them, whom they were grieving intensely. Of these, 76 individuals (18.95 % of 401) fulfilled the

An open trial of 'grief-help': a cognitive-behavioural treatment for prolonged grief in children and adolescents.

In the past years, there is growing recognition of a syndrome of disturbed grief referred to as prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Although mostly studied in adults, clinically significant PGD symptoms have also been observed in children and adolescents. To date, no effective treatment for childhood PGD yet exists. We recently developed a nine-session cognitive-behavioural treatment for childhood PGD combined with five sessions of parental counselling. In the current article, we present outcomes of treatment of 10 consecutive children and adolescents turning to our university clinic with elevated

Well-being comparisons and mental health outcomes following loss: a two-wave longitudinal study.

Background: The loss of a significant other may lead to prolonged grief disorder (PGD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, and loneliness. Comparative thinking about one's well-being (e.g. social, temporal, counterfactual, or expectation-based comparisons) may act as a cognitive link between bereavement and psychopathology. For example, frequently comparing current well-being to pre-loss levels (i.e. past temporal comparison) and perceiving a gap (comparison discrepancy) can intensify negative emotions (comparison affective impact), which may, in turn,
