In Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 Head Repositioning Errors Suggest Impaired Cervical Proprioception.

Background: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a rare multisystemic genetic disorder with motor hallmarks of myotonia, muscle weakness and wasting. DM1 patients have an increased risk of falling of multifactorial origin, and proprioceptive and vestibular deficits can contribute to this risk. Abnormalities of muscle spindles in DM1 have been known for years. This observational cross-sectional study was based on the hypothesis of impaired cervical proprioception caused by alterations in the neck spindles. Methods: Head position sense was measured in 16 DM1 patients and 16 age- and gender-matched

Electrophysiological Properties of Proprioception-Related Neurons in the Intermediate Thoracolumbar Spinal Cord.

Proprioception, the sense of limb and body position, is required to produce accurate and precise movements. Proprioceptive sensory neurons transmit muscle length and tension information to the spinal cord. The function of excitatory neurons in the intermediate spinal cord, which receive this proprioceptive information, remains poorly understood. Using genetic labeling strategies and patch-clamp techniques in acute spinal cord preparations in mice, we set out to uncover how two sets of spinal neurons, Clarke's column (CC) and Atoh1-lineage neurons, respond to electrical activity and how their i

The relationship between cervical proprioception and balance in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Proprioceptive abnormalities, balance, and postural disorders have been previously reported in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Unlike previous research, the aim of this study was to compare the proprioception of the cervical region of patients with FMS with a healthy control group. The relationship between cervical proprioception impairment and loss of balance was also examined. A total of 96 female FMS patients and 96 female healthy control subjects were enrolled in this case-control study. The cervical joint position error test (CJPET) was administered to the patient and control groups for cerv

Low Back Pain: The Potential Contribution of Supraspinal Motor Control and Proprioception.

Motor control, which relies on constant communication between motor and sensory systems, is crucial for spine posture, stability and movement. Adaptions of motor control occur in low back pain (LBP) while different motor adaption strategies exist across individuals, probably to reduce LBP and risk of injury. However, in some individuals with LBP, adapted motor control strategies might have long-term consequences, such as increased spinal loading that has been linked with degeneration of intervertebral discs and other tissues, potentially maintaining recurrent or chronic LBP. Factors contributi

Frataxin Expression in Sensory Neurons Is Required for Muscle Spindle Function and Proprioception.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Friedreich's Ataxia is caused by a reduced expression of the mitochondrial protein frataxin and characterized by impaired proprioception, but it is unknown if muscle spindles are affected. This study analyzed muscle spindle structure and function as well as proprioception in a murine model for Friedreich's Ataxia. METHODS: We investigated motor coordination, muscle spindle function, and morphology in mice with a selective loss of frataxin in parvalbumin-expressing neurons (FXN-Pvalb-cKO), including proprioceptive afferents, at 6.5- (early symptomatic stage) and 8.5- (late s

Effects of Type II Diabetes on Proprioception during a Reach to Pinch Task.

Older adults with type II diabetes (T2D) are at risk of developing nerve disorders that result in functional impairment. Most work in proprioceptive dysfunction in older adults with T2D has focused on functional deficits of the lower limb. The purpose of this study was to examine proprioceptive effects of T2D on the upper limb in older adults. Kinematic performance of a reach-to-pinch action toward a virtual target was assessed in a T2D group (60+ years old with T2D) and a healthy age- and sex-matched control group. Tactile and vibratory thresholds did not differ between T2D and controls. Task

Proprioception and Exteroception of a Soft Robotic Finger Using Neuromorphic Vision-Based Sensing.

Equipping soft robotic grippers with sensing and perception capabilities faces significant challenges due to their high compliance and flexibility, limiting their ability to successfully interact with the environment. In this work, we propose a sensorized soft robotic finger with embedded marker pattern that integrates a high-speed neuromorphic event-based camera to enable finger proprioception and exteroception. A learning-based approach involving a convolutional neural network is developed to process event-based heat maps and achieve specific sensing tasks. The feasibility of the sensing app

Changes in spinal curvature and proprioception of schoolboys carrying different weights of backpack.

Despite evidence linking backpack carriage and back pain, previous studies to examine the effects of backpack carriage have focused on changes in physical performance rather than the direct effects on the spine itself. Spinal curvature and proprioception (in terms of spinal repositioning consistency) of 15 schoolboys during normal upright stance without a backpack and while carrying a specially adapted backpack loaded at 10, 15 and 20% of their bodyweight were measured and compared using repeated measures ANOVA. A significant flattening of the lumbar lordosis and the upper thoracic kyphosis wa

Proprioceptive Terrain Classification for Hexapod Robots with Statistical and Spectral Features.

Terrain types significantly affect the dynamics and locomotion performance of hexapod robots during walking. Terrain classification is a key solution to modify gait patterns in different terrains and recognize hazardous conditions. Perceiving the terrain with proprioceptive sensing is a robust and reliable approach in extreme conditions. In this paper, an efficient terrain classification approach for a hexapod robot is proposed. The proposed method combines a deep classification framework including the long short-term memory (LSTM) network and an effective statistical feature extraction. Propr

Tractographic analysis of proprioceptive and pain pathways in individuals with degenerative scoliosis.

Although increased pain and balance problems in individuals with degenerative scoliosis (DS) are well documented, the associated changes in the central nervous system remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of postural imbalance and pain in individuals with DS on the central sensory pathways responsible for proprioception and pain modulation. In this context, tractography results of the proprioceptive and pain-modulating pathways were compared between individuals with DS and healthy controls. A total of 38 individuals with DS and 38 healthy individuals were included in the s

Proprioceptive limit detectors contribute to sensorimotor control of the Drosophila leg.

Many animals possess mechanosensory neurons that fire when a limb nears the limit of its physical range, but the function of these proprioceptive limit detectors remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate a class of proprioceptors on the Drosophila leg called hair plates. Using calcium imaging in behaving flies, we find that a hair plate on the fly coxa (CxHP8) detects the limits of anterior leg movement. By reconstructing CxHP8 axons in an electron microscopy dataset, we found that they are wired to excite posterior leg movement and inhibit anterior leg movement. Consistent with this con

Proprioceptive acuity for locating and controlling movements of a hand-held tool.

We investigated proprioceptive acuity for location and motion of a never seen hand-held tool (30 cm long rod) and the accuracy of movements to place tool parts in the location of remembered visual targets. Ten blindfolded right-handed subjects (5 females) reached with the tool held in the right hand to touch the tip and midpoint to the stationary and moving left index-tip, to the right and left ear lobes and to remembered visual target locations. We also tested accuracy of left hand rod reaches to the ear lobes to determine if rod dimensions and control of tool movements experienced during rig

Joint Contributions of Auditory, Proprioceptive and Visual Cues on Human Balance.

One's ability to maintain their center of mass within their base of support (i.e., balance) is believed to be the result of multisensory integration. Much of the research in this literature has focused on integration of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive cues. However, several recent studies have found evidence that auditory cues can impact balance control metrics. In the present study, we sought to better characterize the impact of auditory cues on narrow stance balance task performance with different combinations of visual stimuli (virtual and real world) and support surfaces (firm and c
