The Dundee Limb Fitting Centre has provided an integrated rehabilitation programme for the amputee since 1965. A review of 1846 primary amputees is discussed. During this period a dramatic change in the above-knee/below-knee (AK/BK) ratio has been achieved with 71% BK and 26% AK occurring in 1989. Over 80% of all amputees, the majority being elderly with peripheral vascular disease, were successfully fitted with a prosthesis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to test the feasibility of an immediate-fit, adjustable prosthesis (iFIT Prosthesis) for persons with limb loss in Botswana.

Sixty adult patients had psychologic testing following successful below- or above-knee amputation surgery. All were considered to be prosthetic candidates based on the evaluation of an experienced multidisciplinary rehabilitation team. During the last 5 years non-inflatable penile prostheses were implanted in 37 patients with spinal cord injury. Operation was done to provide adequate stability of the penis in order to hold an external urinary device, to help erectile impotence and to make self-catheterisation easier. A review of 11 patients who sustained burns that were complicated by limb amputation was completed to determine their eventual ability to use prosthesis. A case of immediate stump reconstruction following proximal leg amputation below the knee is reported. Additional length and sensation are conferred to the stump by free autotransplantation of a composite flap taken from the unsalvageable amputated leg. This flap provided 13 cm of vascularized tibia invested in the skin of the foot. This operative procedure facilitated the fitting of a prosthesis and preserved knee function despite an initial very proximal amputation.
