A Unique Case of Community Acquired Proteus mirabilis Meningitis.

Proteus mirabilis, a gram-negative bacterium commonly known for causing urinary tract infections (UTI) can rarely present with central nervous system (CNS) infections. Proteus mirabilis CNS infections are usually encountered in the neonatal and infantile period and occasionally cause brain abscesses. It is an uncommon cause of adult CNS infection. We report the first case of a community-acquired Proteus mirabilis meningitis (PMM) in a patient with Proteus mirabilis UTI, urolithiasis, and bacteremia. Risk factors for gram-negative bacillary meningitis (GNBM) include extremes of age, cancer hist

Dermatologic findings in individuals with genetically confirmed Proteus syndrome.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Proteus syndrome, caused by a mosaic activating AKT1 variant, typically presents in toddlers with progressive, asymmetric overgrowth of the skin and bones. We aimed to define the spectrum of dermatologic disease in individuals with genetically confirmed Proteus syndrome. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of records from dermatologic examinations of individuals evaluated at the NIH with a molecular diagnosis of Proteus syndrome. The types, prevalence, and localization of dermatologic findings were assessed. RESULTS: Fifty-one individuals (29 males, 22 females,

Fronto-temporal cerebriform connective tissue nevus in Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is one of the very rare syndromes with occurrence of cerebriform connective tissue nevus. The aim of the present manuscript was to present a case of Proteus syndrome in an unusual facial location, which to the best of our knowledge, is being reported for the first time. The unusual occurrence further strengthens the mosaical basis of its etiopathogenesis.

Proteus syndrome: a case report with bone scintigraphy findings.

Proteus syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder characterized by an asymmetrical overgrowth of skin, bones, muscles, fatty tissues, and blood and lymphatic vessels. We present a case of a six-year-old boy with proteus syndrome who underwent bone scintigraphy for suspected osteomyelitis. Bone scintigraphy ruled out osteomyelitis and suggested cellulitis. In addition, it demonstrated striking characteristic deformities, which need to be emphasized. Knowledge of these findings will avoid misinterpretation of bone scintigraphy in patients with proteus syndrome.

Sudden death caused by pulmonary thromboembolism in Proteus syndrome.

We report 3 patients with Proteus syndrome (PS) who died suddenly from pulmonary embolism (PE). The first patient was a male diagnosed with PS at 12 years who had varicose veins, portal vein thrombosis, right iliac vein occlusion and recurrent PE. At age 25 years, he was admitted to the hospital with a severe headache. Despite therapeutic doses of warfarin, investigations for an acute episode of breathlessness showed PE and he was unable to be resuscitated. The second case was a 9-year-old male with PS who collapsed at home and could not be revived. Autopsy revealed that the cause of death was

Virulence determinants of uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis.

The urinary tract is among the most common sites of bacterial infection and E. coli is by far the most common infecting agent. In patients with urinary catheters in place or structural abnormalities of the urinary tract, Proteus mirabilis is also a frequent isolate. To study virulence of these bacterial species, we have isolated the genes that encode putative virulence factors, constructed specific mutations within these genes, introduced the mutation back into the wild type strain by allelic exchange, and analyzed these mutants for virulence in appropriate in vitro and in vivo models. Overgrowth management in Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber and Proteus syndromes.

Twenty-eight patients with limb overgrowth and the diagnosis of Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber or Proteus syndromes were evaluated retrospectively. These disorders are part of the phakomatosis spectrum of syndromes. The orthopedic problems consisted of asymmetric limb overgrowth, localized gigantism, angular deformities, scoliosis, vascular malformations, and skin anomalies. Systemic abnormalities are common and deserve full evaluation before treatment. Surgical treatment consisted of epiphysiodesis, osteotomies, debulking procedures, and amputation. Mixed results were obtained with surgery, and cons

Severe proteus syndrome in an 18-month-old boy.

We describe an 18-month-old Greek boy with macrocephaly, partial gigantism of hands and feet, hemihypertrophy, pigmented nevi, and other anomalies compatible with the Proteus syndrome. Cerebral involvement in a most severe form and at an early age concurs with the suggestion that encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis may represent a more circumscriptive manifestation of Proteus syndrome. Localized triggering of several growth factors is a challenging pathogenetic consideration of the syndrome.

Clinical Characterization of Skin Findings on the Hands in Proteus Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Proteus syndrome is a progressive asymmetric overgrowth disorder caused by mosaic activating variants in AKT1. It most frequently affects the skin, soft tissues, bones, and central nervous system and increases the risk for certain tumors and venous thromboembolism. A hallmark feature is the progressive plantar cerebriform connective tissue nevus (CCTN). The natural history of skin manifestations of the hand in Proteus syndrome is less well characterized. METHODS: A retrospective review of photography collected from 2000 through 2024 was conducted as part of an ongoing natural hist

Into the understanding the multicellular lifestyle of Proteus mirabilis on solid surfaces.

Indwelling urinary catheterization can lead to the development of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), an important type of nosocomial infection, as well as other medical issues among institutionalized adults. Recently, Proteus mirabilis was highlighted as the important cause of CAUTIs. The pathogenicity of P. mirabilis is dependent on two multicellular types of surface colonization: the adherence and swarming motility. Adhesion, mostly mediated by fimbrial and nonfimbrial adhesins, is important for the initiation of biofilm formation. Moreover, the production of urease frequ

A rare gynecologic presentation of proteus syndrome: A case report.

Proteus syndrome is a genetic condition with an estimated incidence of less than one in a million. This condition is sporadic and presents as progressive, mosaic overgrowth of different tissues. Clinical manifestations are diverse, with the reported involvement of lungs, skin, blood cells, the nervous system and bones. Gynecologic manifestations have rarely been reported in the literature. This case is the first to be reported in the literature of a woman with Proteus syndrome diagnosed in her prepubertal years and presenting at 34 years old with a cervical mass protruding from the vagina. Giant umbilical cord and hypoglycemia in an infant with Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is characterized by the progressive, segmental, or patchy overgrowth of the skin, and other tissues. This is the first case report of recurrent severe insulin-independent hypoglycemia in an infant with PS. Somatic p.E17K of AKT1 mutation was confirmed. The patient also had a giant umbilical cord, which has not yet been reported in PS.

Operative Management of OSAS in a Complex Case of Proteus Syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common disorder in childhood with high prevalence in syndromic subjects with craniofacial malformations. Proteus Syndrome (PS) is a rare hamartoneoplastic disorder associated with disproportionate and asymmetric overgrowth of body parts and hypertrophy or malformation of lymphatic tissues, such as palatine tonsils. We report a case of a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with Proteus Syndrome (PS) and suffering from OSAS due to asymmetric palatine tonsillar hypertrophy, treated with partial resection of left tonsil. To avoid the risk of a general anesthesia
