Among a series of 312 patients with prenatally diagnosed uropathies, 4 male children developed urinary calculi at ages varying from 2 to 5 years. All had upper urinary tract dilatation not associated with vesicoureteric reflux or with renographically defined obstruction; 3 followed Proteus urinary infections. Strategies for prevention are discussed.

Proteus mirabilis, a leading cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CaUTI), differentiates into swarm cells that migrate across catheter surfaces and medium solidified with 1.5% agar. Pyoderma is a purulent skin infection usually caused by bacteria and can be divided into primary and secondary categories based on histology. In the present study, an 18-month-old female mixed breed sheep was examined for pyoderma at the injection site of the enterotoxemia vaccine. After routine bacteriology and histopathology procedures, secondary pyoderma caused by Proteus mirabilis was diagnosed. The bacterium analysed using genome sequencing and new strain called AJJ 2021 was diagnosed. This is the first report of pyoderma caused by Proteus mirabilis in sheep.

In this study, 63 patients with various urinary tract infections were treated with cefotaxime in different dosages. They were aged from 10 to 82 years (mean: 59). The cases included 33 cystitis, 25 pyelonephritis, 4 chronic prostatitis and 1 orchiepididymitis. 85 strains of enterobacteria were identified: 20 E. coli, 2 Citrobacter freundi, 5 Proteus mirabilis, 12 indole positive Proteus, 1 Providentia, 11 Klebsiella, 3 Enterobacter cloacae and 31 Serratia marescens and liquefaciens. 80 of these strains had MIC less than or equal to 1 mcg/ml (median: 0,12 mcg/ml). Closed sterile catheter drainage has markedly reduced the incidence of nosocomial urinary tract infections. Infections that occur during closed drainage must ascend by colonizing the catheter or urethra. Our study compared adherence by different bacterial species to different catheter surfaces. We found no bacteria adhering to the hydrophilic catheter surface. Of the gram-negative bacteria Proteus mirabilis showed the greatest adherence to the other catheters and it, like most bacteria, showed the most marked adherence to the red rubber catheter.

Stone formation in the double J ureteral catheter is an uncommon complication that generally appears in patients that are predisposed to stone formation and persistent infection of the urinary tract. We report on a 29-year-old female patient in whom stone formation was observed in both ends of the catheter, less than 3 months after it had been placed. Urine culture was positive for P. mirabilis. The clinical and pathological findings in two recent patients with non-salmonella enterobacterial endocarditis are described, and those of 42 patients in the literature are summarized.
