In vitro evaluation of efficacy of nonstarch polysaccharides enzymes on wheat by simulating the avian digestive tract.

In this study, the efficacy of different nonstarch polysaccharide (NSP) enzyme sources on wheat ingredients and wheat basal diets in vitro were evaluated by simulating the avian digestive tract. In Exp. 1, pH level was increased from 2.0 to 8.0 by simulating the avian digestive tract. The relative enzyme activities of xylanase A, B, and C and β-glucanase X at pH 3.0-3.5 were higher (P < 0.05) than those at pH 2.0 or 7.0-8.0. The optimal pH levels of 3.5 and 7.0 were screened by simulating the proventriculus and small intestine, respectively to evaluate the efficacy of NSP enzyme on wheat sourc

Hippo signaling regulates dorsoventral patterning in Drosophila head and eye development.

The integration of growth and patterning is essential for proper tissue development. In Drosophila, the Hippo pathway controls organ size, including formation of adult structures from the eye-antennal imaginal disc. Defective Proventriculus (Dve), a K-50 domain transcription factor, regulates dorsal-ventral patterning by suppressing eye fate and promoting head cuticle development, thereby influencing eye position and interocular distance. We investigated how the Hippo effector Yorkie (Yki) and Dve coordinate growth and patterning in the dorsal head region. Our results show that Yki regulates d

Emerging lethal infectious bronchitis coronavirus variants with multiorgan tropism.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes respiratory diseases in chickens and poses an economic threat to the poultry industry worldwide. Despite vaccine use, there have been field outbreaks of IBV in Taiwan. This study aimed to characterize the emerging IBV variants circulating in Taiwan. The analysis of the structural protein genes showed that these variants emerged through frequent recombination events among Taiwan strains, China strains, Japan strains and vaccine strains. Cross-neutralization tests revealed that two of the variants exhibited novel serotypes. Clinicopathological assessment

Redescription of Procyrnea uncinipenis (Molin, 1860) (Nematoda: Habronematidae) based on material from Rhea americana (L.) (Aves: Rheidae).

A detailed description of Procyrnea uncinipenis (Molin, 1860) (Habronematidae) is provided based on light- and scanning electron microscopy of newly collected material ex Rhea americana (L.) from a private conservation breeding park located in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim (State of Espírito Santo, Brazil). Of the four host specimens analysed, two were infected with P. uncinipenis; a total of 441 nematodes were collected in the proventriculus and gizzard. The specimens represented large nematodes, sexually dimorphic, with females larger than males, reddish in vivo, with two well developed lateral ps

Transcriptional regulation of Yersinia pestis biofilm formation.

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is transmitted primarily by infected fleas in nature. Y. pestis can produce biofilms that block flea's proventriculus and promote flea-borne transmission. Transcriptional regulation of Y. pestis biofilm formation plays an important role in the response to complex changes in environments, including temperature, pH, oxidative stress, and restrictive nutrition conditions, and contributes to Y. pestis growth, reproduction, transmission, and pathogenesis. A set of transcriptional regulators involved in Y. pestis biofilm production simultaneously contr

Experimental aflatoxicosis in young Japanese quail.

Japanese quail from the university colony fed graded levels of dietary aflatoxin (0, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 micrograms/g) from hatching to 4 weeks of age were comparatively resistant to aflatoxin as growth inhibition occurred at a dose of 5.0 micrograms/g or more as about 50% mortality occurred at a dose of 20 micrograms/g. The acute oral LD50 was 19.5 +/- 4.8 mg/kg. These values are up to ten times those reported in the literature for other quail. The most sensitive indicators of aflatoxicosis were depressed serum proteins and serum carotenoids and enlarged liver and pancreas, all of

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 and H5N1 outbreaks in Algerian avian livestock production.

Avian Alpha-influenza-virus (AIV) massively affects poultry, targeting mainly the respiratory tract for virus replication. Recently, two major H5N8 and H5N1 outbreaks caused tremendous losses in Algerian poultry. The clinical symptoms that had not been seen in the past didn't prompt a rapid reaction to control the epidemics. We report here the characteristics of these outbreaks and the epidemiological status of AIV in Algeria. Following autopsy observation samples from target organs were taken and analyzed by the classical real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR). Sp

Occurrence of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster in exotic birds.

Avian gastric yeast (Macrorhabdus ornithogaster) is a microorganism that infects aviary birds worldwide, both captive and wild. A total number of 352 birds, belonging to 18 avian species, were examined from 2019 to 2022 for M. ornithogaster, using fecal smears of live birds or cytological samples of the proventriculus taken at necropsy. These cytological samples were taken from birds that died from different causes. Some of the birds exhibited symptoms such as lethargy, regurgitation, weight loss and anorexia. Faecal samples were collected from all the birds and analysed for gastric yeast usin

Phylogenetic study on distribution and chromogranin/secretogranin content of histamine immunoreactive elements in the gut.

The distribution of histamine-immunoreactive (HA-IR) elements and possible coexistence of chromogranin A (CgA), chromogranin B (CgB) and secretogranin II (SgII) were immunohistochemically studied in gut specimens of various vertebrate species. In fish, HA-IR cells were distributed mainly within the gastric and duodenal mucosa, and nerve fibres in the gastric myenteric plexus. Only the gastric HA-IR cells co-stored SgII. In frog specimens, HA-IR endocrine cells and nerve fibres were found in the distal stomach wall, but SgII coexisted only in the nerve fibres. In lizard, HA-IR endocrine cells w

Locations of gut-associated lymphoid tissue in the 3-month-old chicken: a review.

The lymphoid tissue that is associated with the intestinal tract, the so-called gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), is well developed in the chicken. Depending on the location, it is present as aggregations of lymphoid cells, or organized in lymphoid follicles and tonsils. From proximal to distal, the intestinal tract contains a pharyngeal tonsil, diffuse lymphoid tissue and lymphoid follicles in the cervical and thoracic parts of the oesophagus, an oesophageal tonsil, diffuse lymphoid tissue in the proventriculus, a pyloric tonsil, Peyer's patches, Meckel's diverticulum, two caecal tonsils

Description of Skrjabinoclava pharyngophila n. sp. (Nematoda: Acuariidae) from the oropharynx of the sacred kingfisher Todiramphus sanctus (Vigors & Horsfield) in New Zealand.

The sacred kingfisher Todiramphus sanctus is a widespread bird species that is non-migratory in New Zealand, in contrast to elsewhere in the world. We describe a new species of Skrjabinoclava, a genus of acuariid nematodes, recovered from the oropharynx of sacred kingfishers in New Zealand. This is the first record of Skrjabinoclava in Australasia and the first publicly available DNA sequence for the genus. Skrjabinoclava pharyngophila n. sp. is unique in its infection site, occupying the oropharyngeal mucosa, which is atypical for Skrjabinoclava species, which usually infect the proventriculu

Seasonal Variations in the Digestive Tract of the Little Owl, Athene noctua: Anatomical, Histological, and Scanning Electron Microscopical Studies.

The digestive tract of the little owl, Athene noctua (Strigiformes: Strigidae), is described in two different seasons. The digestive tract of this bird follows the basic model for that of a predatory bird. The cervical esophagus is not expanded to form a crop. The internal surface of the esophagus forms numerous longitudinal folds provided with numerous mucous glands. These longitudinal folds increase in number and vary in depth posteriorly. The folds of the proventriculus are composed of simple branched tubular glands. The ventriculus is lined by a thin layer of koilin. The number of goblet c

[Interaction of plague microbe strains varying in plasmid composition with the fleas Xenopsylla cheopis (Roths. 1903)].

The interaction of two Yersinia pestis strains varying in plasmid composition with the fleas Xenopsylla cheopis was studied. The reference virulent strain I-2638 having four plasmids (pCad, pPst, pFra, and pTP 33) and its selected avirulent strain I-3480 that had lost the plasmids pCad and pPst formed a proventricular block in the fleas with equal frequency. There were no differences in the block-forming capacity of these strains among the infected females; however, the stock strain was more active in blocking the proventriculus in females in spring than was the mutant one. in summer. Topographic representation of visceral target organs within the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve of the pigeon Columba livia.

Our previous work (Katz and Karten, '83a J. Comp. Neurol. 217:31-46 demonstrated that the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMN complex) in the pigeon is composed of cytoarchitecturally distinct subnuclei that are distinguished by the size, shape, position, and cytochemical characteristics of their constituent neurons. In view of the diversity of target organs innervated by the vagus nerve, we sought to determine whether the subnuclear heterogeneity of the DMN complex is related to the pattern of target innervation. To test this possibility, retrograde tracing techniques were used to de

Distinct Roles of Transketolase (TktA) and Transaldolase (talB) in Metabolism, Biofilm Formation, and Flea Colonization in Yersinia pestis.

The flea-borne transmission of Yersinia pestis relies on biofilm formation and metabolic adaptation within the insect gut. The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is central to these processes, yet the contribution of its non-oxidative branch remains poorly defined. Here, we investigated the roles of transketolase (TktA) and transaldolase (TalB) in plague bacillus physiology, metabolism, and flea colonization. TktA was essential for growth, preventing assessment of its role in biofilm formation and in vivo colonization. In contrast, TalB was dispensable for growth but required for optimal biofilm
