Pacheco's disease in a Hungarian zoo bird population: a case report.

An epizootic of Pacheco's disease is reported from a zoo bird population. The infection was introduced by wild-captured Patagonian conures (Cyanoliseus patagonus) despite 61 days of quarantine. The disease affected several parrot species and, interestingly, three out of seven bearded barbets (Lybius dubius). The mortality rate was 30.93%. Autopsy revealed abdominal hyperaemia with liver haemorrhages and, in less rapid cases, yellowish discoloration and fragility of the liver. Death was caused by the collapse of circulation. Histopathology demonstrated liver cell necrosis, disintegration of the

'Atypical pneumonia' due to parakeet sensitivity: bird fancier's lung in a 10-year-old girl.

p6trinsic allergic alveolitis is rare in childhood, with most of the cases reported due to exposure to avian precipitins (Stiem et al. 1966; Dinda et al. 1969; Chandra & Everly Jones 1972; El-Hefny et al. 1980). We report a 10-year-old girl with bird fancier's lung, and suggest that environmental antigens should be sought in children presenting with non-resolving chest disease.

Percloacal Ovocentesis in the Treatment of Avian Egg Binding: Review of 20 Cases.

Egg binding is one of the most commonly diagnosed reproductive disorders in avian medicine. Often, egg binding is caused by multiple factors, including inappropriate diet and husbandry, reproductive tract pathology, and/or systemic disease. Treatment of egg binding can include medical management or egg removal either percloacal or through surgical means. Percloacal ovocentesis is a commonly described technique in avian practice. The aim of this study was to consider the signalment, success of facilitating egg removal, associated complications, and outcome when percloacal ovocentesis was perfor

Molecular Prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. among Companion Birds Kept in Pet Shops in Japan.

Cryptosporidium is the most common protozoan that can infect a wide range of animals, including mammals and birds. Avian Cryptosporidium spp. can cause enteric and respiratory diseases which can be fatal in birds and some species are zoonotic. Companion birds have the potential as reservoir due to their close contact with humans. Pet shops are the major source of companion birds. However, few reports are available regarding Cryptosporidium spp. infection among companion birds kept in pet shops. The present study reports the prevalence and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium spp. among

Developmental origins of mosaic evolution in the avian cranium.

Mosaic evolution, which results from multiple influences shaping morphological traits and can lead to the presence of a mixture of ancestral and derived characteristics, has been frequently invoked in describing evolutionary patterns in birds. Mosaicism implies the hierarchical organization of organismal traits into semiautonomous subsets, or modules, which reflect differential genetic and developmental origins. Here, we analyze mosaic evolution in the avian skull using high-dimensional 3D surface morphometric data across a broad phylogenetic sample encompassing nearly all extant families. We

Prevalence of IgY antibodies against Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in a critically endangered parrot (kakapo, Strigops habroptilus) and associated responses to vaccination.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to estimate levels of IgY antibody against the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in serum samples collected from the critically endangered kakapo (Strigops habroptilus, Psittaciformes, Aves) before and after vaccination against this bacterium. Relative IgY antibody titres in pre-vaccination serum samples (n = 71 individual kakapo) were normally distributed with the exception of four outliers which displayed low IgY levels. Notably all four low IgY samples were collected from fledglings 3 - 6 months old. Pre-vaccination serum sampl

Characterization and classification of psittacine atherosclerotic lesions by histopathology, digital image analysis, transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative and inflammatory vascular disease characterized in mammals and birds by the accumulation of inflammatory cells, lipids, calcium, and formation of large fibrofatty lesions within the intima of arteries resulting in the disorganization of the arterial wall and stenosis of the lumen. Despite the high incidence of atherosclerosis in parrots and the high number of case reports, there are few pathologic investigations and the ultrastructural study of the lesions has not been documented. Sixty-three major arteries were collected from 24 psittacine birds of 11 species

Ventral Surface Microanatomy of the Raptor Pes Is Most Strongly Linked to Prey Size and Diet Rather Than Phylogeny in Australian Species.

The ventral microstructures on the digits of birds are comprised of reticulate scales. This epidermal structure presents as cornified papillae, rather than the typical flattened scutellate scales (scutes) found on the dorsal surfaces of the tarsus and toes. Reticulate scales are likely functionally important structures, particularly for predatory species when capturing prey with their feet, as they serve as the initial contact interface between a bird and an object. These scales are found only on the plantar surface of feet and digits, and as such these structures offer a unique avenue of enqu

Identification of gastrointestinal parasites in wild birds seized during integrated preventive inspections, Bahia, Brazil.

Brazil stands out as the country with the most remarkable biological diversity in the world, underscoring the need for more effective public policies to conserve the environment and combat wildlife trafficking. Trafficked animals, often kept in captivity, are usually maintained under unsanitary conditions, favoring the development of diseases caused by gastrointestinal parasites. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the primary endoparasites found in wild birds seized during trafficking operations as part of Integrated Preventive Inspections (IPIs) in the state of Bahia, Brazil. [Sublingual salivary gland granuloma as a husbandry-induced disease in a Timor gray parrot].

Psittacines kept as pets show a predisposition to vitamin A deficiency conditions. The lack of a varied diet, over-long storage times for seed and no knowledge regarding species specific feeding behaviour all lead to squamous cell epithelium metaplasia in the region of beak, oesophagus and trachea. The submandibular tumour of the sublingual salivary glands in parrots also belongs to this group of deficiency conditions. A granuloma of the right sublingual salivary gland in a Timor African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erythacus timneh) is described. It was classed as husbandry-dependent on the basis o

Toxoplasmosis in mynahs.

Visceral toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 23 mynahs (Acridotheres) imported from Mexico, which resulted in the death of all birds in the shipment. The affected birds were inappetent and depressed and had ruffled feathers before death. Gross alterations included mottled, enlarged livers with multiple diffuse subcapsular white foci, congested lungs, mottled spleens, and thickened air sacs. Microscopic alterations were multifocal granulomatous hepatitis, pneumonitis, diffuse splenitis, focal mononuclear myocarditis, and airsacculitis. Foamy macrophages in affected areas of the livers contained 8-10

Semen collection by electro-stimulation in a variety of bird orders.

It is unquestinable that artificial insemination (AI) offers many benefits to avian conservation programs, but a serious impediment towards implementing AI for wild species is the development of effective techniques to consistently collect good quality ejaculates. Thus, we aimed to examine the success rate of electro-stimulation (ES) in collecting semen from 49 unconditioned males from orders Piciformes, Strigiformes, Accipitriformes, Cathartiformes, Galiformes, Anseriformes and Psittaciformes at different times of the year. Sixty out of 299 ES attempts provided ejaculates with sperm, but coll

mRNA Galsomes Vaccine Protects Budgerigars Against Virulent Chlamydia psittaci Challenge.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia (C.) psittaci is an avian respiratory pathogen that regularly infects budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and is a known zoonosis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a nucleoside-modified mRNA vaccine formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), either with (mRNA Galsomes) or without (mRNA LNPs) the glycolipid antigen α-Galactosylceramide, in protecting budgerigars against C. psittaci genotype A infection. METHODS: Three groups of eight budgerigars received two intramuscular vaccinations with PBS, mRNA LNPs or mRNA Galsomes, and were subsequently chal

Beak and feather disease virus variant-dependent antibody reactivity in naturally infected psittacine birds.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV, species Circovirus parrot) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), characterised primary by death of nestlings, feather loss and presumed immunosuppression in parrots worldwide. BFDV shows marked genetic heterogeneity, particularly in the open reading frame 2 (ORF2) encoding the capsid protein (Cap), but the impact of this diversity on antibody recognition has not been systematically assessed. In this study, we used seven recombinant Cap proteins derived from ORF2 variants selected to reflect the diversity of BFDV genotypes ci

Haematological findings in budgerigars with megabacterium and Trichomonas infections associated with 'going light'.

Eighteen budgerigars with clinical signs of 'going light' were euthanased and examined post mortem; ingluvitis caused by Trichomonas gallinae infection was present in seven birds, proventriculitis associated with the presence of megabacteria in eight birds and in three birds both conditions were present. Haematological examinations of blood taken from the living birds showed that those with T gallinae infection had normal white cell counts whereas those in which megabacteria were present had significant leucocytosis and heterophilia. Some birds in both groups were anaemic. The findings suggest

Comparing the toepads of Australian diurnal and nocturnal raptors with nonpredatory taxa: Insights into functional morphology.

The ventral structures of the avian digits are the critical interface between a bird and the item within its grasp (e.g., prey, landing substrate, or object), and as such are vital for ensuring the hunting success and survival of predatory birds. Here, we present the first descriptive analysis of the ventral structures of the toes, toepad morphology, and toepad surface area of several diurnal (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) and nocturnal species (Strigiformes) of Australian raptors. We compare these with nonpredatory taxa (passeriform and psittaciform) to elucidate possible functional expl

Comparative distribution of 2[125I]iodomelatonin binding in the brains of diurnal birds: outgroup analysis with turtles.

The roles that the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin play in the regulation of circadian rhythmicity and photoperiodism vary among vertebrate species. Recently, putative sites of melatonin action have been elucidated in several avian and mammalian species by application of in vitro binding of a radioiodinated melatonin agonist, 2[125I]iodomelatonin (IMEL) and autoradioradiography. These studies in mammals, birds and reptiles have indicated profound differences in the distribution of IMEL binding between these diverse groups, suggesting that these large differences in binding may reflect d
