The Impact Message Inventory (IMI-C): generalizability of patients' command and relationship messages across psychiatric nurses.

This paper tests the hypothesis that patients' stereotypical dysfunctional interpersonal communication styles would be validly measurable by the command or relationship messages experienced by psychiatric nurses while interacting with the patient in the relatively unstructured every day context of the psychiatric ward. The generalizability of interpersonal pressures exerted by patients was tested by having different psychiatric nurses independently appraise patients' command or relationship messages with the Impact Message Inventory, circumplex version (IMI-C). Generalizability of interpersona

METHODS: Using a stratified cluster sampling method to select participants, a cross-sectional surv

Clinical Competence for Youth Suicide: Use of Simulation in Pediatric and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Programs.

Approximately one in five adolescents in the United States has a mental health concern and suicide is the second leading cause of death in this population. It is vital to prepare nurse practitioner (NP) students with the required skills to assess and manage youth with suicidal ideation. Unfortunately, it is challenging for NP students to accumulate these critical competencies due to limited preceptors and the infrequent presentation of suicidality in certain clinical sites. Furthermore, the serious nature of a child in mental health crisis often requires students to take a passive role while d

The current study explored the type and number of problematic Internet experiences (PIE) encountered by psychiatric-mental health nurses (PMHN) in clinical practice and analyzed PMHNs' clinical cases of clients with PIE. A mixed-methods quantitative survey with a qualitative component measured the types and number of PIE cases via a descriptive survey and derived themes using narrative inquiry methodology from written case descriptions. A sample of 16 PMHNs provided quantitative data and nine participants summarized clinical cases. PMHNs reported 92 adult and 33 child cases of PIE. Six themes

Development of the Nurse Attitude Scale short form: factor analysis in a large sample of Japanese psychiatric clinical staff.

The Nurse Attitude Scale (NAS) measures nurses' Expressed Emotion. A short form of the NAS was developed and its reliability and validity examined. After performing factor analysis using 1252 samples, three factors were extracted. Cronbach's alpha for individual subscales was 0.852 for Hostility, 0.846 for Criticism and 0.645 for Positive Remarks. There was a significant correlation between individual subscales in the NAS short form and corresponding subscale in the Maslach Burnout Inventory (P < 0.001). The NAS short form seems to have acceptable reliability and validity.

Workplace violence and risk factors for PTSD among psychiatric nurses: Systematic review and directions for future research and practice.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Trauma among psychiatric nurses and other healthcare workers is related to workplace violence, but other risk factors may also contribute, including those occurring before, during or after workplace violence. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Most previously identified PTSD risk factors were not tested or supported in research with psychiatric nurses, although there is promising evidence for risk factors including severe or injurious assault, cumulative exposure, burnout, and other worker characteristics. We identify directions for research needed

An analysis of Chinese nursing electronic medical records to predict violence in psychiatric inpatients using text mining and machine learning techniques.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of violence in acute psychiatric wards is a critical concern. According to a meta-analysis investigating violence in psychiatric inpatient units, researchers estimated that approximately 17% of inpatients commit one or more acts of violence during their stay. Inpatient violence negatively affects health-care providers and patients and may contribute to high staff turnover. Therefore, predicting which psychiatric inpatients will commit violence is of considerable clinical significance. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to estimate the violence rate for psychiatric i

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of virtual simulation, SP simulation, and hybrid simulation on undergraduate nursing students' clinical judgment, therapeutic communication, self-repor
