Intrinsically memorable words have unique associations with their meanings.

What makes a word memorable? An important claim from past work is that words are encoded by their meanings and not their forms. If true, then, following rational analysis, memorable words should uniquely pick out a particular meaning, which means they should have few or no synonyms, and they should be unambiguous. Across two large-scale recognition-memory experiments (2,222 target words and > 600 participants each, plus 3,780 participants for the norming experiments), we found that memory performance is overall high, and some words are consistently remembered better than others. Critically, th

Constraints on Exchange Edits During Noisy-Channel Inference.

According to the noisy channel framework of sentence processing, communication can succeed even when the input is corrupted because comprehenders rationally infer the speaker's intended meaning based on the prior probability of the literal interpretation and the probability that the input has been corrupted by noise. To test whether and under what conditions comprehenders consider word exchanges as a possible source of corruption, we ran five experiments on processing three types of simple German sentences: subject-before-object sentences (SO), object-before-subject sentences (OS), and passive

Writing Impairments in Spanish Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

This study investigated which components of the writing production process are impaired in Spanish children with developmental dyslexia (DD) aged 8 to 12 years. Children with and without dyslexia (n = 60) were assessed in their use of the lexical and the sublexical routes of spelling as well as the orthographic working memory system by manipulating lexical frequency, phonology-to-orthography (P-O) consistency, and word length in a copying task and a spelling-to-dictation task. Results revealed that children with dyslexia produced longer written latencies than chronological age-matched (CA) con

Shared neural and cognitive mechanisms in action and language: The multiscale information transfer framework.

This review compares how humans process action and language sequences produced by other humans. On the one hand, we identify commonalities between action and language processing in terms of cognitive mechanisms (e.g., perceptual segmentation, predictive processing, integration across multiple temporal scales), neural resources (e.g., the left inferior frontal cortex), and processing algorithms (e.g., comprehension based on changes in signal entropy). On the other hand, drawing on sign language with its particularly strong motor component, we also highlight what differentiates (both oral and si

A Reading Model from the Perspective of Japanese Orthography: Connectionist Approach to the Hypothesis of Granularity and Transparency.

This study presents a computer simulation model of reading in Japanese syllabic kana and morphographic kanji. The model was based on the simulation model developed by Harm and Seidenberg for reading in English. The purpose of building the current model was to verify the validity of the hypothesis of granularity and transparency (HGT) postulated by Wydell and Butterworth, focusing on the granularity dimension. The HGT was developed in order to explain the behavioral dissociation between excellent reading skills in Japanese and poor reading skills in English of an English-Japanese bilingual indi

Reading Processes and Parenting Styles.

Home literacy environment explains between 12 and 18.5 % of the variance of children's language skills. Although most authors agree that children whose parents encourage them to read tend to develop better and earlier reading skills, some authors consider that the impact of family environment in reading skills is overvalued. Probably, other variables of parent-child relationship, like parenting styles, might be relevant for this field. Nevertheless, no previous studies on the effect of parenting styles in literacy have been found. To analyze the role of parenting styles in the reading processe

Qualitatively different semantic representations for abstract and concrete words: further evidence from the semantic reading errors of deep dyslexic patients.

This paper presents an investigation of the hypothesis that conceptual knowledge for abstract and concrete items is underpinned by qualitatively different representational frameworks (Crutch and Warrington, 2005a). A re-analysis of the semantic reading errors of four deep dyslexic patients is presented, examining the incidence of semantically associated and semantically similar errors in response to abstract and concrete target words. The results demonstrate that abstract target words elicit a greater proportion of associative than similar errors, while concrete words show the reverse pattern.

Minimal pair approaches to phonological remediation.

This article considers linguistic approaches to phonological remediation that emphasize the role of the phoneme in language. We discuss the structure and function of the phoneme by outlining procedures for determining contrastive properties of sound systems through evaluation of minimal word pairs. We then illustrate how these may be applied to a case study of a child with phonological delay. The relative effectiveness of treatment approaches that facilitate phonemic acquisition by contrasting pairs of sounds in minimal pairs is described. A hierarchy of minimal pair treatment efficacy emerges

Speech Sound Categories Affect Lexical Competition: Implications for Analytic Auditory Training.

OBJECTIVES: We provide a novel application of psycholinguistic theories and methods to the field of auditory training to provide preliminary data regarding which minimal pair contrasts are more difficult for listeners with typical hearing to distinguish in real-time. DESIGN: Using eye-tracking, participants heard a word and selected the corresponding image from a display of four: the target word, two unrelated words, and a word from one of four contrast categories (i.e., voiced-initial [e.g., peach-beach], voiced-final [e.g., back-bag], manner-initial [e.g., talk-sock], and manner-final [e.g.

The transposed-word effect persists across text orientations in Chinese.

In speeded grammaticality decision tasks, the transposed-word effect occurs when ungrammatical word sequences created by swapping adjacent words in an otherwise grammatical sentence are harder to reject than control sequences derived from ungrammatical base sentences, providing evidence for flexible word-order processing during reading. Previous research shows that this effect is often attenuated in atypical display formats, including serial word presentation and backward text, especially in RTs. Some accounts interpret this pattern as a shift from parallel processing, in which multiple words

Complex meanings shape early noun and verb vocabulary structure and learning.

Verbs and nouns vary in many ways-including in how they are used in language and in the timing of their early learning. We compare the distribution of semantic features that comprise early acquired verb and noun meanings and measure their effect on learning. First, couched in prior literature, we use semantic feature data to establish that features pattern on a hierarchy of complexity, with perceptual features being less complex than other features like encyclopaedic features. Second, given overall semantic and syntactic differences between nouns and verbs, we hypothesize that the preference f

Explicit encoding vs. fast mapping of novel spoken words: Electrophysiological and behavioural evidence of diverging mechanisms.

It has been claimed that two major neurocognitive mechanisms - instruction-based explicit encoding (EE) and inference-driven fast mapping (FM) may be involved in rapid acquisition of novel words, but their exact neural underpinnings remain poorly understood. To address this, we trained 36 adult participants with 20 novel spoken words in an audio-visual task, carefully balanced between the EE and FM conditions for physical, psycholinguistic and pragmatic properties as well as the overall task setup. To assess the neural dynamics associated with novel word acquisition, we recorded event-related

Dyslexia in a consistent orthography: Evidence from reading-level match design.

Studies in consistent orthographies using reading-level (RL) match design have produced conflicting results, possibly because of problems with general ability and RL matching in many studies. We matched the participants on both verbal and nonverbal ability and on reading tasks with no ceiling effects and compared the performance of Grades 4 and 6 Greek-speaking children with dyslexia to those of chronological age (CA) and RL matched control groups across a variety of tasks associated with dyslexia (phonological awareness, rapid naming, phonological memory, and orthographic processing). Distributional learning for speech reflects cumulative exposure to a talker's phonetic distributions.

Efficient speech perception requires listeners to maintain an exquisite tension between stability of the language architecture and flexibility to accommodate variation in the input, such as that associated with individual talker differences in speech production. Achieving this tension can be guided by top-down learning mechanisms, wherein lexical information constrains interpretation of speech input, and by bottom-up learning mechanisms, in which distributional information in the speech signal is used to optimize the mapping to speech sound categories. An open question for theories of perceptu

Attentional bias to pain-related information: a meta-analysis of dot-probe studies.

Studies investigating attentional biases towards pain information vary widely in both design and results. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the degree to which attentional biases towards pain occur when measured with the dot-probe task. A total of 2168 references were screened, resulting in a final sample of 4466 participants from 52 articles. Participants were grouped according to pain experience: chronic pain, acute pain, anticipating experimental/procedural pain, social concern for pain, or healthy people. In general, results revealed a significant, but small bias towards pain

Acquired dyslexia in three writing systems: study of a Portuguese-Japanese bilingual aphasic patient.

The Japanese language is represented by two different codes: syllabic and logographic while Portuguese employs an alphabetic writing system. Studies on bilingual Portuguese-Japanese individuals with acquired dyslexia therefore allow an investigation of the interaction between reading strategies and characteristics of three different writing codes. The aim of this study was to examine the differential impact of an acquired brain lesion on the reading of the logographic, syllabic and alphabetic writing systems of a bilingual Portuguese-Japanese aphasic patient (PF). Results showed impaired readi

Neuropsychological evaluation of language.

Neuropsychological evaluation of language may be based on the psychometric approach or on extensive exploration of modular functions according to cognitive or linguistic theory. Various approaches have several features in common, although some emphasize individual functions, and others explore syndromes in brain-damaged populations. Systematic assessment of language has been developed according to the goals of various clinicians and researchers. Beyond the diagnostic need, prognosis, and planning for therapy, there are important theoretical reasons to have standardized aphasia tests and comple

HelexKids 2.0: A linguistically annotated lexical database building on HelexKids.

HelexKids 2.0 represents an annotated expansion of the original HelexKids, a word frequency database compiled from Greek and Cypriot elementary school textbooks. This article presents the extended annotation methodology employed to enrich the database with part-of-speech tags, phonological properties (syllable count, phonetic transcription, orthographic and phonological syllabification, and stress), and morphological features (case, number, gender, and inflection class for nouns). All original frequency and lexical measures are retained, and new ones (e.g., PLD20, bigram and biphone frequencie

An In-Depth Investigation of Eye Movement Profile of Dyslexic Readers Using a Standardized Text-Reading Aloud Task in French.

(1) Background: Most eye-movement studies in dyslexia focus on silent reading in controlled laboratory settings. Yet, oral reading of standardized texts remains central for identifying this disorder. By combining eye-tracking with oral reading, we captured both fixation dynamics and eye-voice span (EVS) measures, offering a richer view of the processes underlying dyslexia. (2) Methods: We tested 10 adults with dyslexia and 14 controls as they read aloud an unpredictable diagnostic text in French. Analyses examined psycholinguistic effects of word length and lexical frequency on fixation probab

A longitudinal study of personality disorders in individuals with and without a history of developmental language disorder.

Traditionally developmental language disorders (DLDs) have been studied with focus on psycholinguistic and cognitive implications, and little is known of the long-term psychosocial outcomes of individuals diagnosed with a DLD as children. The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence rates and types of personality disorders (PDs) in a clinical sample of 469 individuals diagnosed as children with DLD, with PDs in 2,345 matched controls from the general population without a known history of DLD, using data from the nation-wide Danish Psychiatric Central Register (DPCR).
