BACKGROUND: Military personnel exposed to potentially traumatic events whilst deployed on operational duties may develop psychological problems. The Royal Marines have made extensive use of Trauma Risk Management (TRiM), a peer-support system that operates through practitioners embedded within operational units. TRiM aims to promote recognition of psychological illness and to facilitate social support.
AIMS: To evaluate the effects of TRiM in two units at different stages of implementation.
METHODS: Royal Marines and Army personnel were surveyed prior to, during and upon return from an opera

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of psychological characteristics and pain reporting among women with vulvar vestibulitis syndrome (VVS).
METHODS: In this exploratory study, 109 women with VVS completed a battery of questionnaires to assess pain with intercourse and psychological characteristics (e.g. somatization, anxiety, distress). The distribution of these characteristics was compared, first with a conventional binary classification schema (primary and secondary) and subsequently with a 3-category schema (primary, latent primary, secondary).
RESULTS: Severity of pain with inter

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: From March to June 2006 doctors at university hospitals in Germany went on strike. As they are part of the caring profession, doctors are exposed to extraordinary moral misgivings and ethical conflicts when it comes to striking. Against this background this study investigated for the first time effects of walkout on working relations, individual capacity and mental symptoms among striking doctors.
METHODS AND SAMPLE: In a cross-sectional study 42 female and 64 male doctors, average age 33.6 years, at the Tübingen University Hospitals Center were surveyed by questionn

PURPOSE: Studies examining the association between psychological distress and HIV status among women belonging to populations at elevated risk for HIV have found mixed results. The goal of this study is to shed greater insight into possible explanations for the mixed findings of the earlier studies. Specifically, we examine psychological distress as a function of dyadic HIV status--that is, the combination of a participant and her partner's HIV statuses--among women attending methadone maintenance treatment programs (MMTPs).
METHODS: A random sample of 349 female MMTP patients involved in int

Patient psychological distress is associated with many aspects of the bone marrow transplantation (BMT) process and has been linked with poor treatment outcomes. We assessed psychological distress in potential BMT candidates, and compared patient and nurse coordinator ratings of emotional distress at the time of initial BMT consultation. Fifty patients self-reported psychological distress using both the NCCN Distress Thermometer (DT) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Coordinators rated patient emotional distress using the DT and Coordinator Rating Scales that measure anxiet

PURPOSE: To describe psychological distress among abused minority women with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and to identify needs for psychotherapeutic intervention for reduction in abuse, sexual risk behavior and STD.
DATA SOURCES: A controlled randomized trial of the effects of a behavioral intervention on STD recurrence. Eligibility was limited to English speaking Mexican-American and African-American women with a current non-viral STD confirmed by laboratory testing (gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis or trichomonas). All eligible women who could be contacted were recruited from public-

Although monthly breast self-examination (BSE) is recommended for early breast cancer detection, most women do not comply. Few studies have examined the impact of psychological distress on BSE frequency. Recent research suggests that it may be particularly important to examine the role of distress in the recently identified phenomenon of BSE overperformance (> 1/month). One hundred thirty-five healthy women with and without family histories of breast cancer completed sociodemographic, health belief, general and cancer-specific psychological distress, and BSE frequency questionnaires. Although there is a need for systematic research on the psychosocial issues faced by lung cancer patients, there have been few studies in this area. The objective of the present study was to investigate potential predictors of psychological distress among ambulatory lung cancer patients. The variables examined included the patients' characteristics, coping responses, and social support factors. Lung cancer patients completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and the Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale (MAC scale), and information pertaining to demographic variables and social support factors was

GOALS OF WORK: The objective of this study was to determine how psychological characteristics, subjective symptoms, a family history of breast cancer, and age impact psychological distress in outpatients at the first hospital visit prior to breast cancer diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were prediagnosed women with complaints of breast symptoms who either came to our hospital directly, or with a referral from another clinic. Patients were asked to complete questionnaires to determine the following: trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), negative emotional suppression (Co

OBJECTIVE: Suicide in depressed patients has become a serious challenge in the field of public health. In-depth analyses of the relationship between psychological distress and suicidal ideation, as well as its intrinsic mechanisms, are of great clinical significance for the prevention of suicide in depressed patients. The objective of this study was twofold: firstly, to explore the intrinsic relationship between psychological distress and suicidal ideation in depth; and secondly, to further investigate the mediating roles of psychological resilience and neuroticism in this relationship.

While there is broad evidence to suggest that individual stress increases, and that high couple relationship quality reduces the risk for psychological distress, our understanding of these associations in couples dealing with infertility remains limited. In this cross-sectional study, we used dyadic data-analysis (Actor-Partner Interdependence Model; APIM) to examine the effects of infertility-related distress (experienced as an individual risk factor) and couple relationship quality (experienced as a couple-based resource), on psychological distress in a sample of 116 infertile couples. 59% o

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use among university students has been increasingly linked to psychological distress; however, most evidence comes from Western contexts, and little is known about how cannabis use intersects with emotional functioning in non-Western settings. In Türkiye, where cannabis use remains illegal and highly stigmatized, students who use cannabis may represent a particularly vulnerable group. This study examined the associations between cannabis-related problems, psychological distress, and distress tolerance among Turkish university students, and explored students' lived psycholo

Repeated implantation failure (RIF) is one of the most stressful and distressing experiences for women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) [1]. Despite progress in identifying physical and physiological factors affecting RIF, such as embryo selection, endometrial preparation, and laboratory techniques, there has not been much progress in understanding the psychological factors associated with RIF in infertile women. Compared with a single failed ART cycle, RIF is associated with repeated in vitro fertilization (IVF) failures, and repeated cycles of hope and disappointment exace

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studies of the health of rescue workers after a major disaster have frequently focused on posttraumatic stress disorder. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of psychological distress and its psychosocial predictors in rescue workers within a 2-month period after an earthquake that struck central Taiwan on September 21, 1999.
METHODS: A total of 1,104 rescue workers serving in the earthquake were enrolled in the study. Psychological distress was measured using the Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS), personality traits using the Maudsley Personality Inventor

PURPOSE: The transdiagnostic approach provides an efficacious and efficient alternative to disorder-based psychological therapies. Emerging evidence suggests that a single main process may maintain psychological distress, but its identity is unclear, and some studies have found additional processes. We included a larger range of process and symptom measures to address these issues. In addition, we used a measure developed from Perceptual Control Theory to test its capacity to describe the findings.
METHOD: A total of 806 participants completed process measures including worry, rumination, emo

Whilst there is evidence suggesting that women have worse mental health outcomes after experiencing domestic violence (DV), there is a lack of investigation into the long-term effects of DV on psychological distress and risk factors that may exacerbate poor outcomes. To address this evidence gap, the current study analysed national data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health in relation to DV, psychological distress and potential risk factors for Australian women. Participants (n = 4,156) completed a pre and post DV Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), DV measure, and

Psychological stress and cancer are frequently framed in causal narratives in public discourse; however, current scientific evidence does not support such assumptions. Epidemiological and prospective cohort studies indicate that psychological stress cannot be established as an independent carcinogenic factor, and population-level associations between stress and cancer incidence are consistently absent. Certain psychosocial variables, including maladaptive coping strategies or persistent high-level distress, show moderate and inconsistent associations with clinical outcomes (e.g., survival, rec

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, are prevalent and represent a major risk factor for psychological distress in adulthood. Although control-related constructs such as self-efficacy, mastery, and perceived control have been widely examined in this context, the role of locus of control (LoC) remains less well understood. The present study investigated the associations between ACEs, LoC, and psychological distress, and examined whether LoC mediates or moderates the relationship between ACE exposure and psychological distress. Data were draw
