For Debate: Growth Hormone Treatment of Infants Born Small for Gestational Age should be Started at or before the First Year of Age.

Children born small for gestational age without early catch-up of somatic growth and head circumference subsequently remain short and suffer from various degrees of neurocognitive and psychological impairment. Based upon the role of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I on early brain growth and maturation, we propose that GH treatment of these infants be instituted prior to their 2nd birthday.

The relationship between online self-disclosure and individual posttraumatic growth under public health emergencies: A moderated mediation model.

This study examined the relationship between online self-disclosure and posttraumatic growth (PTG) during public health emergencies, focusing on underlying mechanisms. A moderated mediation model was developed, incorporating deliberate rumination as a mediator and perceived positive feedback as a moderator. Data were collected from 559 college students using the COVID Stress Scale, Online Self-Disclosure Scale, Deliberate Rumination Scale, Perceived Positive Feedback Scale, and PTG Scale. Results showed that online self-disclosure directly and positively predicted PTG and indirectly influenced

Rumination and posttraumatic growth in people with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the connection between rumination and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in cancer patients, while also investigating the underlying factors that may explain the mixed findings observed in prior research on this relationship. METHODS: The PRISMA method for evidence synthesis was adopted in the study. Studies published from inception through August 2024 that reported a correlation between PTG and rumination (intrusive rumination and deliberate rumination) among people with cancer were identified through systematic searches in nine databases, including PubMed, PsycIN

The impact of core belief disruption on posttraumatic growth and PTSD in healthcare workers: examining the mediating effect of rumination.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are often exposed to traumatic events and as a result, they may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental illnesses. The prevalence of these issues is high among healthcare professionals. Positive transformation (i.e., PTG) can emerge after struggles related to a stressful life event. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM), a sample of Iranian healthcare workers (nurses and pre-hospital emergency personnel from Ardabil) completed a battery of self-report questionnaires. These measures included a

The Disease Experience of Adolescent Patients with Osteosarcoma: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study.

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone malignancy among adolescents and is known for its rapid progression, high invasiveness, and poor prognosis. It poses a serious threat to adolescents' survival and well-being. Moreover, as research on adolescent osteosarcoma patients in China is limited, studies exploring their disease experience are even rarer. In this descriptive-phenomenological study, 10 adolescent patients with osteosarcoma underwent semi structured interviews to explore their disease experience. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step method, yielding five core themes: p

Perceived social support as a mediator of the relationship between fear of progression and post-traumatic growth in lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy: a structural equation model analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic growth (PTG), as a positive psychological adaptation mechanism, can significantly enhance patients' psychological resilience and promote positive psychological transformation. However, among lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, fear of progression (FoP) is associated with substantial psychological distress and lower levels of positive adaptation. Research on the association between FoP and PTG in this population remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between FoP and PTG among lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and to examine w

Predicting profiles of post-trauma adaptation in first responders and civilians after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings: The role of distress, growth, and emotion regulation.

INTRODUCTION: Responses to trauma are often characterized either by the presence or absence of psychological distress; however, the process of adapting after trauma also includes potential positive change. While some studies document that the majority of individuals exposed to single event terrorism report low levels of psychological distress, more research is needed to understand different adaptation profiles following this type of trauma, and the factors that might predict responses. METHODS: We examined post-trauma responses in 257 first responders/medical professionals (66.8 percent) and

Longitudinal and transcultural assessment of the relationship between hallucinogens, well-being, and post-traumatic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of the global population. This paper presents the results of a longitudinal transcultural study that was begun at the peak of the pandemic (in April, 2020). An online survey was used to collect data from English-, Spanish-, and Portuguese-speaking participants. The survey collected information about sociodemographics, lifestyle activities, COVID-19-related circumstances, and drug use (with an emphasis on hallucinogenic drugs), as well as involving psychometric questionnaires. Users of hallucinogenic drugs had higher

Post-traumatic growth in refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Globally, millions of people are forced to flee their home nation due to war, conflict, political instability, natural disasters or persecution every year. The detrimental psychological issues that refugees experience are well established, whilst research on positive psychological well-being, such as Post-Traumatic Growth, is limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesise the peer-reviewed literature which quantitatively measured PTG in refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and present factors associated with PTG in this population. Methods: The fol

A mixed methods experience sampling study of a posttraumatic growth model for addiction recovery.

Problematic substance use and addiction is a growing crisis in the United States. As a result, identifying factors that effectively promote addiction recovery is, currently, of particular societal importance. Informed by evidence that-while addiction can be perpetuated by stress-related impulsivity and decreased self-regulation-perceived social support is protective against addiction, we test a model for addiction recovery as a form of posttraumatic growth (PTG), focused specifically on close relationships and personal strength-two domains of PTG. In an initial study, we found that perceived s

Posttraumatic Growth in U.S. Military Veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

Despite increasing recognition that positive psychological changes or posttraumatic growth (PTG) may develop after highly stressful or traumatic events, contemporary population-based data on the epidemiology of PTG in high-risk samples such as U.S. military veterans are lacking. Additionally, in light of emerging evidence suggesting an 8-factor model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, an up-to-date characterization of how these symptom clusters relate to PTG can help inform efforts to help promote PTG. Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veter

Sex steroid replacement during and after the induction of puberty.

The main aim of sex steroid replacement during induction of puberty is to obtain a balance between healthy psychological and somatic development and optimal final height and peak bone mass (PBM). At present, the age at which it is considered appropriate to begin inducing puberty is younger than it was in the past. This trend aims for optimisation of prepubertal and pubertal growth through earlier onset of growth hormone (GH) therapy and administration of higher doses during puberty as necessary. Adequate initiation of puberty should ensure not only optimal final height and psychological balanc

The levels and related factors of posttraumatic growth among nurses: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Nurses often encounter traumatic events in their clinical practice. Trauma can have both negative effects, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and positive effects, such as growth and positive emotions. Posttraumatic growth is beneficial for nurses, as it contributes to positive mental health outcomes and increases life satisfaction. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Our study confirms that nurses commonly experience posttraumatic growth after being exposed to traumatic events, and the level of growth is moderate. We have identified indiv

Cognitive processing in the aftermath of relationship dissolution: Associations with concurrent and prospective distress and posttraumatic growth.

Non-marital romantic relationship dissolution is amongst the most stressful life events experienced by young adults. Yet, some individuals experience posttraumatic growth following relationship dissolution. Little is known about the specific and differential contribution of trait-like and event-specific cognitive processing styles to each of these outcomes. A longitudinal design was employed in which trait-like (brooding and reflection) and dissolution-specific (intrusive and deliberate) cognitive processing was examined as predictors of growth (Posttraumatic Growth Inventory) and distress (Br

Psychosocial adaptation to short stature - an indication for growth hormone therapy?

Although growth hormone does not clearly improve final height in non-growth-hormone-deficient children with short stature, it leads to a temporary acceleration of growth velocity. It is an ongoing discussion whether this effect supports psychosocial adaptation to short stature and therefore could be an indication for growth hormone treatment in children with short stature without growth hormone deficiency. We have reviewed recent literature concerning psychosocial consequences of short stature. Together with own data we can demonstrate that short people regularly adapt well to their height and

Periodic tallies by regulatory boards: a vital tool for tracking supply in the psychology workforce.

Regulatory boards in psychology and other mental health professions are in key positions to address workforce supply issues. Board data provide real time estimates of the growth within the health professions they regulate. The authors recommend that periodic tallies of the psychology workforce be undertaken through surveys of psychology boards. This will require that boards adopt efficient and standard methods for tracking licensees. Better data from boards would provide longitudinal and cross-jurisdictional comparisons that may enhance efforts to balance supply and demand in the professional
