The Mediating Role of Rumination in the Relation between Basic Psychological Need Frustration and Depressive Symptoms.

Research within the framework of Basic Psychological Need Theory (BPNT) finds strong associations between basic need frustration and depressive symptoms. This study examined the role of rumination as an underlying mechanism in the association between basic psychological need frustration and depressive symptoms. A cross-sectional sample of N = 221 adults (55.2% female, mean age = 27.95, range = 18-62, SD = 10.51) completed measures assessing their level of basic psychological need frustration, rumination, and depressive symptoms. Correlational analyses and multiple mediation models were conduct

From knowledge to competence: reflections on theoretical work.

In this paper, the author maintains that the language of the clinical situation is and should be that of common-sense psychology. The author argues that the languages of clinical theory and metapsychology are at a distinctive distance from clinical language. In fact, no theory could be produced, should this distance not be upheld. The function of clinical theory is to act as a corrective to the tendency of common-sense psychology to fall back into the banalities and prejudices of general ideology. In addition, the function of metapsychology is said to be that of scrutinising clinical theory an

A previously-untranslated report by Freud of a lecture on the mechanism of obsessional ideas and phobias.

This is an English translation of Freud's report of a lecture that he delivered in 1895 on the 'Mechanism of obsessional ideas and phobias'. The report was not included in the Standard Edition of Freud's psychological works, and nor was it included in any of the other collections of his writings. The lecture described in this report seems to have been derived directly from Freud's contemporaneous essay on 'Obsessions and phobias' (1895b). However there are a few discrepancies between the two, and these are discussed in the footnotes to the translation.

The cognitive theory of panic disorder: A systematic narrative review.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive theory of panic disorder proposes that individuals with panic disorder have a relatively enduring tendency to catastrophically misinterpret bodily sensations resulting in panic attacks. AIMS: We investigated whether the evidence is consistent with the theory and its predictions, if updates are required and sought to identify future research considerations. METHODS: We searched Scopus, Web of Science, PsycInfo, EMBASE, MEDLINE and CINAHL (1986 to July 2024). Inclusion criteria were studies collecting quantitative data derived from panic disorder patients, testing one

Attachment theory and hoarding disorder: A review and theoretical integration.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a severe and persistent mental illness characterized by extreme difficulty parting with possessions and considerable clutter that can result in dangerous living conditions. HD poses a considerable public health burden; however, treatment for HD remains relatively limited, as many individuals do not respond to treatment and/or do not maintain treatment gains, suggesting there are important factors not being adequately addressed. In particular, one area that is not well-understood nor well-integrated into cognitive behavioral models is the pathological attachment indivi

Unexplored issues and future directions in social phobia research.

There have been significant advances in recent years in the understanding and treatment of social phobia, which are summarised in this Special Issue. This paper outlines and describes some further priority areas for future research. It is suggested that social phobia should be investigated as a developmental condition, with special attention to the first two years of life; and subtypes of social phobia be further explored and their implication for treatment. Social phobia is often comorbid with other disorders and its relationship with these disorders warrants further investigation with respec

The timing deficit hypothesis of dyslexia and its implications for Hebrew reading.

Vast amounts of neuropsychological evidence have been collected in recent years in support of the hypothesis that developmental dyslexia is caused not only by phonological deficits, but also by timing deficits that affect all senses (e.g., Tallal, Miller, & Fitch, 1995; Stein & Walsh, 1997). In parallel, recent developments in the study of Hebrew reading place heavy emphasis on root awareness in the mental lexicon and early root extraction in the process of word identification (e.g., Frost, Forster, & Deutch, 1997). The present study creates a link between the timing hypothesis and the special

Crisis intervention techniques for panic disorder.

Panic disorder is estimated to affect more than 4% of the U.S. population. It is assumed that this incident rate increases during crisis situations. While the professional literature is replete with references on the treatment of panic disorders, few authors address the use of nondrug treatment in conjunction with crisis intervention. This article provides an overview of the latest nonpharmacologic interventions for panic along with a description of their effectiveness in reducing the onset of symptomatology as well as preventing relapse during crisis.

Dissociations and dissociation theory in hypnosis: comment on Kirsch and Lynn (1998).

I. Kirsch and S. J. Lynn's (1998) critique of the neodissociation theory of divided consciousness fails to consider evidence of dissociations between explicit and implicit memory and perception in hypnosis. Contrary to their conclusions, evidence that the rate of hidden observer response (like other hypnotic responses) varies with the wording of instructions does not contradict neodissociation theory; rather, it underscores the fact that hypnosis entails social interaction as well as alterations in conscious awareness. Neodissociation and sociocognitive theories of hypnosis complement each oth

A review and critique of psychological approaches to the burn-out phenomenon.

In the 70s the concept burn-out appeared in psychological literature on the helping professions. The concept has since then been ascribed several meanings, and critical voices have been raised against the lack of clarity and consensus in the definitions. The aim of this article was to critically examine the thinking on the concept of burn-out. The helping professionals--nurses, welfare officers, psychologists, medical doctors, etc.--have expanded rapidly since the 60s. It is stated that the issues on which burn-out researchers focus deserve the attention of social scientists in general. The ma

The establishment of primal repression and its consequences in contemporary clinical practice.

Freud himself never clearly and unequivocally defined his concept of primal repression, which has been considered mythical, obscure, mysterious, incomplete, enigmatic or controversial. This paper revisits the concept with the support of the hypothetical conceptual clarity provided by the heard word (soundimage) and the visual image discussed in Freud's book On Aphasia: A critical Study (1953[1891]). The heard word allows for affective change and reorganisation according to Oedipal law, which is postulated as the essence of primal repression. Thing-presentation takes place prior to word-present

Adjunctive behaviors are operants.

Adjunctive behaviors such as schedule-induced polydipsia are said to be induced by periodic delivery of incentives, but not reinforced by them. That standard treatment assumes that contingency is necessary for conditioning and that delay of reinforcement gradients are very steep. The arguments and evidence for this position are reviewed and rejected. In their place, data are presented that imply different gradients for different classes of responses. Proximity between response and reinforcer, rather than contingency or contiguity, is offered as a key principle of association. These conceptions

Addiction: the urgent need for a paradigm shift.

Severe addictions to drug use and to countless other habits are causing enormous harm around the globe. Massive expenditures and dedicated efforts of police, doctors, addiction therapists, and self-help groups have failed to bring the problem under control, although many individual addicts have been helped. What can society do when our best efforts continue to fail and a menacing problem continues to grow? This paper proposes that a major paradigm shift is required. The currently dominant paradigm assumes that addiction is either an individual disease or an individual moral breach. But this in

Born to fear: non-associative vs associative factors in the etiology of phobias.

Poulton and Menzies (Behaviour Research & Therapy 40 (2001) 127-149) review two lines of evidence as supporting a non-associative pathway to the origins of "evolutionary relevant phobias". First, in retrospective studies of mode of onset some recall they have always had this fear. We review here solid evidence that retrospective recall is notoriously unreliable. Second, they note as many nonphobics recall relevant associative learning experiences as do phobics. We argue such studies are very inconclusive because they fail to consider many experiential and personality vulnerability (and invulne

The relationship of theory and methodology in EEG studies of mental activity.

Due to the multidisciplinary character of psychophysiology, the problem of comparability of psychological and physiological phenomena of different natures and levels of organization has always been raised. This requires the interaction of theory and methodology to appropriately address the specifics of the psychophysiological paradigm, all the while maintaining their grounding in the actual psychological and physiological concepts. The history of EEG studies of mental activity shows that a weak theoretical basis at certain stages can result not only in methodological crises but can also affect
