Pro-Inflammatory Dietary Profiles Are Associated with Psychosocial Functioning in Spanish Adolescents: Findings from the EHDLA Study.

Background: Dietary factors may influence psychosocial outcomes through inflammatory pathways, but evidence in adolescents remains limited. The aim was to examine whether dietary inflammatory potential is associated with psychosocial functioning among Spanish adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on a subsample from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) project, conducted in the Region of Murcia (Spain). Dietary inflammatory potential was assessed using a dietary inflammatory index (DII)-informed Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ)-derived inflammatory score b

Apathy and Depression Among People Aging With Traumatic Brain Injury: Relationships to Cognitive Performance and Psychosocial Functioning.

OBJECTIVE: Apathy and depression are both common after moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and may be especially important to distinguish in older adults with TBI. The authors examined apathy and depression in relation to cognitive performance domains and their potentially unique contribution to psychosocial functioning in this patient population. METHODS: A total of 106 participants (mean±SD age=64±8 years) with chronic moderate to severe TBI (≥1 year) completed questionnaires assessing severity of apathy (Frontal Systems Behavior Scale-apathy subscale) and depression (Geriatric

The role of mother-adolescent relationship quality in moderating the effect of adolescent anxiety on psychosocial functioning.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of anxiety on adolescents' psychosocial outcomes are well established, but little consideration has been given to the potential influence of the parent-adolescent relationship in moderating these effects. This study examined the moderating role of parent-adolescent connectedness and hostility in the association between anxiety and adolescent psychosocial functioning (measured by positive development [PD] and oppositional defiant behaviour [ODB]) within a community sample of mothers of adolescents. METHOD: Participants were 723 Australian mothers (M age = 44.05 years, SD

Impact of Definitive Surgery for Graves' Disease on Adolescent Disease-Specific Quality of Life and Psychosocial Functioning.

Introduction: Pediatric Graves' disease (GD) is associated with hyperthyroid symptoms that impact psychosocial and physical functioning. Total thyroidectomy (TT) is a definitive treatment option that replaces antithyroid medication. While studies have examined health-related quality of life (QOL) in adults, there are no data describing impacts of TT in pediatrics. In this prospective longitudinal study, we explored the impact of TT on disease-specific QOL and satisfaction with TT and scar appearance in adolescent patients with GD undergoing TT. Methods: Patients 12-19 years old pursuing TT for

Early caregiving quality predicts consistency of competent functioning from middle childhood to adolescence following early psychosocial deprivation.

Adverse developmental outcomes for some children following institutional care are well established. Removal from institutional care and placement into families can promote recovery. However, little is known about how positive outcomes are sustained across adolescence among children with histories of severe deprivation. The present study examined the caregiving conditions that are associated with attaining and maintaining competent functioning (i.e., outcomes within typical levels) from middle childhood to adolescence following exposure to early institutional care. The participants included chi

Fine-motor skill deficits in childhood predict adulthood tic severity and global psychosocial functioning in Tourette's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Most children with Tourette's syndrome (TS) experience a significant decline in tic symptoms during adolescence. Currently no clinical measures have been identified that can predict whose tic symptoms will persist into adulthood. Patients with TS have deficits on neuropsychological tests involving fine-motor coordination and visual-motor integration. We seek to determine if these neuropsychological tests are useful in predicting future symptom severity. METHODS: Thirty-two children, aged 8-14, with TS underwent clinical evaluation and a focused neuropsychological testing battery c

Selected aspects of the psychosocial functioning of medical personnel of emergency medical teams-a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: A paramedic is one of the most mentally demanding professions, requiring responsibility for the health and lives of patients, quick decision-making, and contact with suffering and death. Due to the unpredictable nature of their line of work, this professional group faces high levels of stress. Identifying protective factors, such as personal resources, self-efficacy, and commitment to work, helps better understand the mechanisms of coping in difficult situations and enables corrective and preventive measures to be taken. The aim of the study is to identify and analyse in detail o

Sexual minority disparities in psychosocial functioning following substance use recovery among a representative sample of US adults.

PURPOSE: Sexual minority (SM; e.g., gay, lesbian, bisexual) individuals are disproportionately impacted by alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorders and psychosocial factors that can exacerbate AOD use disorders and hinder recovery. This study examines SM sub-group differences (monosexual [gay/lesbian] versus bisexual) regarding adaptation to recovery measured by indices of psychosocial functioning. Identifying differential needs of gay/lesbian versus bisexual individuals could improve services to better meet the needs of SM individuals in recovery. METHODS: Using data from the National Reco

Cognitive, Emotional, and Psychosocial Functioning of Girls Treated with Pharmacological Puberty Blockage for Idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty.

Central precocious puberty (CPP) develops due to premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, resulting in early pubertal changes and rapid bone maturation. CPP is associated with lower adult height and increased risk for development of psychological problems. Standard treatment of CPP is based on postponement of pubertal development by blockade of the HPG axis with gonadotropin releasing hormone analogs (GnRHa) leading to abolition of gonadal sex hormones synthesis. Whereas the hormonal and auxological effects of GnRHa are well-researched, there is a lack of knowledg
