The many layers of social support: capturing the voices of young people with spina bifida and their parents.

Young people with physical disabilities experience greater difficulty than their able-bodied peers in many psychosocial domains as they transition toward adulthood. However, firsthand knowledge of the dimensions of social support that young people with physical disabilities find useful during this stage is lacking. This qualitative study involved 50 participants (21 youths with spina bifida and 29 parents) and focused on gaining an insider's perspective on the nature of social support. Building on the work of LaGreca, themes were mapped into four broad support domains: tangible, information, c

The unique experiences of women and their families after the death of a baby.

This study sought to discover the ways in which the woman's experience of a baby's death affects her as an individual and within the family system. More specifically, this study asked: Does a woman's experience of stillbirth appear to have long-lasting effects, and what variables influence such changes? Expressed through their own narratives, it appears that a baby's death has long-lasting effects for a woman. Variables that affect her perceptual experience include social support, legitimization of her loss, opportunities for rituals, and existential emotions such as shame and guilt. Results r

[Treatment and care strategies for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias].

The majority of elderly demented patients suffers from mixed dementia, with Alzheimer's-type brain changes being the leading cause of cognitive impairment. Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantin improve cognitive performance in dementia, with a symptomatic parallel shift of 8 to 12 months. Disturbances of perception and behaviour can be prohibited or mitigated by antidementia drugs and improved with antidepressants, neuroleptics, and other substances. The somatic and cerebral comorbidity of demented patients offers further options for improving sensory input, cerebral availability of oxygen an

Exploring a hospital's response to children who have no fixed address.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how a tertiary metropolitan public healthcare provider supported children who presented with 'no fixed address' (NFA). METHODS: A retrospective data mining of the electronic medical records of patients with an NFA classification, over 12 months period. RESULTS: Data mining identified 475 NFA patients, 6% were children. Of the children with NFA, 96% attended the ED only; 10% were referred internally for psychosocial support; 34% had existing psychosocial services; 69% had no recorded discharge location; and 48% self-discharged prior to assessment. CONCLUSION: The hospit

Psychosocial maturity and institutional confinement from ages 15-22: a longitudinal reciprocal model.

OBJECTIVES: Psychosocial maturity develops rapidly during adolescence and early adulthood and is closely linked to delinquency and justice system involvement. Although incarceration and psychosocial immaturity have each been studied, they are rarely examined together within a single developmental framework, and modeling only one direction may inflate estimated effects. Moreover, psychosocial maturity is typically treated as a global construct, despite meaningful variation across its core components. METHODS: We analyzed data from the longitudinal Pathways to Desistance study (N = 1,336), whic

Psychosocial care to affected citizens and communities in case of CBRN incidents: a systematic review.

Disasters are associated with a substantial psychosocial burden for affected individuals (including first responders) and communities. Knowledge about how to address these risks and problems is valuable for societies worldwide. Decades of research into post-disaster psychosocial care has resulted in various recommendations and general guidelines. However, as CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) events form a distinctive theme in emergency planning and disaster preparedness, it is important to systematically explore their implications for psychosocial care. The aim of this study i

Beyond "Biomedical-Plus": Reclaiming the biopsychosocial model in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The biopsychosocial (BPS) model is widely endorsed as best practice in musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy. However, its implementation often remains constrained by biomedical assumptions, with psychosocial approaches primarily used to improve adherence, reduce symptoms, or restore function. As a result, contemporary BPS practice risks becoming "biomedical-plus" care rather than a genuinely integrated approach. MAIN MESSAGE: We argue that physiotherapists can move toward a more authentic application of the BPS model through three interconnected foundational conditions - the 3Cs: p

Experiences of COVID-19 survivors in Gauteng province, South Africa: socioecological implications for South Africa's preparedness for future pandemics.

Gauteng province was at the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa. An understanding of the experiences of survivors in this setting has the potential to inform South Africa's preparedness and response in future pandemics. We aimed to explore the experiences of survivors via a qualitative study conducted in Tshwane and Sedibeng districts, Gauteng. One-on-one interviews were conducted on 20 purposefully sampled survivors and carers. Analysis was guided by the framework methods. An explanatory model was developed using the social ecological model. As a result, eight major themes emer

Longitudinal Impact of Time and Negative Health Events on Physical Independence and Social Participation After Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Many individuals aging with spinal cord injury (SCI) experience health complications that threaten independence and participation. However, little is known about how negative health events (NHEs) and time since injury shape long-term functional and psychosocial outcomes for individuals with SCI. METHODS: Participants were from a national longitudinal dataset of over 13,000 participants from the SCI Model Systems. Participants had 2 or more follow-up assessments of functional and psychosocial outcomes (CHART-SF and SWLS) and NHEs (composite of pain interference, rehospitalization,

Supportive and palliative care for metastatic breast cancer: resource allocations in low- and middle-income countries. A Breast Health Global Initiative 2013 consensus statement.

Many women diagnosed with breast cancer in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) present with advanced-stage disease. While cure is not a realistic outcome, site-specific interventions, supportive care, and palliative care can achieve meaningful outcomes and improve quality of life. As part of the 5th Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) Global Summit, an expert international panel identified thirteen key resource recommendations for supportive and palliative care for metastatic breast cancer. The recommendations are presented in three resource-stratified tables: health system resource al

Psychosocial determinants of postpartum blues among matrilineal mothers in West Sumatra, Indonesia.

Postpartum blues typically occur during the first two weeks after childbirth and may increase the risk of subsequent depressive disorders. In Minangkabau communities of West Sumatra, Indonesia, where matrilineal family systems and neo-local or dual family residence systems exist and husbands frequently migrate, it is insufficiently understood how family structure and partner presence may influence the maternal mood. This study aimed to examine psychosocial determinants of postpartum blues among 240 postpartum mothers between 3 to 14 days postpartum, in Pariaman, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Using

Depressive symptoms among children attending community based support in South Africa - pathways for disrupting risk factors.

Children in Southern Africa are exposed to high rates of structural and family adversities. This study tests whether services from Community Based Organisations (CBOs) in South Africa can promote children's resilience against depression exposed to such adversities. Two linked longitudinal studies were conducted, comprising n = 1848 children aged 9 to 13 years. One group received CBO services, whilst the other (quasi-control) did not. Analyses used interaction terms in regression models to test for potential moderation effects of CBO attendance, and marginal effects models to interpret signific

Peer support specialists and perinatal opioid use disorder: Someone that's been there, lived it, seen it.

Perinatal opioid use disorder (OUD) has increased drastically since 2000 and is associated with myriad adverse outcomes. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommends using peer support services to promote sustained remission from substance use disorders (SUDs). Integrating peer support specialists into perinatal OUD treatment has the potential to improve maternal and child health. However, there is limited published research on the experiences of pregnant and parenting women with peer support specialists during SUD treatment. The purpose of this study was t

A blended psychosocial support program for partners of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and progressive muscular atrophy: protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA) face stressful demands due to severe impairments and prospect of early death of the patients they care for. Caregivers often experience feelings of psychological distress and caregiver burden, but supportive interventions are lacking. The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a psychosocial support program aimed at enhancing feelings of control over caregiving tasks and reducing psychological distress. This support program is based on an existing p

Psychosocial and mental health outcomes associated with gender-affirming interventions among transgender youth: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender youth are a highly vulnerabilized population, facing stigma, discrimination, family rejection, and social exclusion that elevate their risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Gender-affirming interventions-medical, psychological, social, and structural-have been proposed to improve health and wellbeing in this group, but evidence on their psychosocial and mental health impact remains scattered across heterogeneous contexts and intervention types. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize available evidence on psychosocial and mental health outcomes a

Access to eye care and support services among adults from minority ethnic communities living with visual impairment in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increased risk of certain eye conditions which can lead to visual impairment (V.I.), there is evidence of a greater delay to treatment-seeking among adults from minority ethnic communities (MEC). MEC adults may also be underrepresented on V.I. registers, within early intervention services, and among the beneficiaries of national V.I. charities. However, much of this evidence is outdated or anecdotal. METHODS: This secondary analysis of V.I. Lives survey data explored use of eye health and support services and mobility aids among a matched control sample of 77 MEC and 77

Feasibility study of a family-focused intervention to improve outcomes for children with FASD.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence shows that children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) can benefit from interventions, and specifically interventions focused on improving self-regulation. However, novel ways of improving outcomes for children with FASD need further investigation so that programs target not only the individual child but also the family context, which includes the parent-child relationship. AIMS: The current study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of an adapted version of the Parents under Pressure (PuP) program that addresses self-regulatory processes, through improving
