Objectives: Personality organization or functioning describes biographically acquired characteristics for the regulation of psychological processes. Limitations correlate with symptom load. This study examines whether significant improvement in personality functioning can be achieved in the framework of a multimodal psychodynamic treatment and its influence on the psychological symptoms. Methods: In this naturalistic study design (N = 318) personality organization was measured with the OPD-SQS and the symptoms were obtained using PHQ-9, GAD-7, SCL-9 and mini- Spin. Changes in the functioning l

Literature has shown the importance of mentalizing techniques in symptom remission and emotional understanding; however, no study to date has looked at the dynamic relations between mental state talk and affect regulation in the psychotherapy process. From a psychodynamic perspective, the emergence of the child's capacity to regulate affect through the therapist's reflection on the child's mental states is a core aspect of treatment. In an empirical investigation of 2 single cases with separation anxiety disorder, who were treated in long-term psychodynamic play therapy informed with mentaliza

OBJECTIVE: fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and psychological distress, with a significant impact on quality of life. While cognitive-behavioral therapy has been extensively studied as a psychological intervention for FM, the effectiveness of psychodynamic interventions remains underexplored. This systematic review aims to synthesize the existing literature on psychodynamic interventions for FM, focusing on their impact on clinical and psychological outcomes.
METHOD: a systematic search was conducted across PsycINFO, Cochr

This paper presents the Social Phobia Psychotherapy Research Network. The research program encompasses a coordinated group of studies adopting a standard protocol and an agreed-on set of standardized measures for the assessment and treatment of social phobia (SP). In the central project (study A), a multicenter randomized controlled trial, refined models of manualized cognitive-behavioral therapy and manualized short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy are compared in the treatment of SP. A sample of 512 outpatients will be randomized to either cognitive-behavioral therapy, short-term psychodynam

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for patients with anorexia nervosa, although evidence of efficacy is weak. The Anorexia Nervosa Treatment of OutPatients (ANTOP) study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of two manual-based outpatient treatments for anorexia nervosa--focal psychodynamic therapy and enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy--versus optimised treatment as usual.
METHODS: The ANTOP study is a multicentre, randomised controlled efficacy trial in adults with anorexia nervosa. We recruited patients from ten university hospitals in Germany. Participants were rando

Psychodynamic psychiatry is not limited to psychotherapy practice. It is defined by systematic attention to the "common factors" underlying both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology outcomes, which include the patient's subjective systems of meaning and the complex flow of the patient-provider relationship in addition to the patient's "objective" psychopathology. It allows for a non-reductionist milieu where the meaning of the illness and the full complexity of the treatment process can be explored in order to achieve a qualitative and lasting change in the patient's psychopathology. Since the publication of Masters and Johnson's Human Sexual Inadequacy in 1970, sex therapy has become an established, though controversial, new approach to the treatment of sexual disorders. Masters and Johnson adopted the position that any other form of psychotherapy should be avoided or suspended during the two- or three-week period of sex therapy. Helen Kaplan, in considering sex therapy to be a type of psychotherapy, has stressed that the skillful trained psychotherapist uses his awareness of the psychodynamics and unconscious conflicts of the couple in modifying and tailoring the sex the

A depressed woman complained of obsessional worries, insomnia, and life-long nightmares. A novel combination of psychodynamic psychotherapy, paradoxical re-experiencing of the nightmares, and posthypnotic suggestion resulted in amelioration of the nightmares and opening of the field for a self-psychological approach to deeper issues.

Supportive psychotherapy interventions were developed as a part of psychodynamic psychotherapy work, and supportive psychotherapy was historically considered to be the default form of therapy only for lower-functioning patients. These roots unfortunately have resulted in supportive psychotherapy being viewed as an inferior form of treatment. In reality, supportive psychotherapy is a practical and flexible form of psychotherapy that helps patients with a wide range of psychiatric illnesses, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, personality di

Enduring a romantic breakup is a typically highly distressing experience but one that has been surprisingly neglected as a scholarly topic in the psychotherapeutic literature. This introduction reviews the enduring popular interest in this phenomenon and summarizes the contributions of the articles in this issue of JCLP: In Session, all of which focus on working clinically with individuals struggling with the breakup of a romantic relationship. Within this issue, Jackson's case study features the insights of a straight female psychologist working with a gay female patient through the aftermath

The acceleration of climate change and other global and political crises has created a state of "permacrisis," confronting patients with significant distress about and need to grapple with complex and threatening futures emerging from ecological and social upheaval. A core task of psychotherapy has always been imagining alternative paths and self-definitions to improve future outcomes, formalized in approaches such as "future-oriented therapy" or "future-directed therapy." Now the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms that support the process of thinking about potential futures are bett

Adolescent bipolar disorder is a severe psychiatric condition frequently complicated by school refusal behavior, a debilitating functional impairment that often persists even after the pharmacological stabilization of mood symptoms. While medication effectively targets biological dysregulation, it frequently fails to resolve the deep-seated separation-individuation conflicts and pathological family dynamics, such as triangulation, that actively maintain social withdrawal. Given the scarcity of manualized psychotherapeutic protocols for this specific clinical challenge, this article demonstrate

The Psychodynamic Life Narrative is a psychotherapeutic maneuver used during the first few sessions of a consultation with a patient in a crisis situation. By establishing a powerful bond between physician and patient, it offers the possibility of a rapid relief of dysphoric symptoms. In some situations, it may be useful in mobilizing a recalcitrant patient to accept psychotherapy or, in the case of the physically ill, to accept diagnostic procedures and treatments previously refused. It is most effective in patients whose general adaptation has been stable and whose psychological homeostasis

INTRODUCTION: Within a psychodynamic framework multiple theoretical models are offered in the treatment of depression and some of these models also integrate the subjective experience of the body. We give a brief overview of the subjective body in psychodynamic psychotherapies and the evidence regarding the efficacy of psychodynamic treatments addressing the subjective bodily experience in depression. The subsequent review then aimed at identifying the interventions applied within psychodynamic treatments taking an embodied perspective in the treatment of depression while also aggregating find

Bodily awareness has become a central therapeutic factor in psychodynamic and body-oriented psychotherapies, yet its clinical effects and theoretical status remain insufficiently integrated. This paper offers a clinically grounded account of bodily awareness work in Psychodynamic Movement and Dance Therapy (PMT), conceptualising the body as the primary medium of lived experience rather than as an object of intervention. Drawing on phenomenology, developmental psychoanalysis, and clinical theory, the paper argues that therapeutic change in PMT unfolds through prereflective, embodied processes that p

A psychodynamic formulation of borderline psychopathology includes the understanding of the borderline patient's aloneness problems, need-fear dilemma issues, and difficulties with primitive guilt. The aloneness problems are at the core of the disorder, and involve an inability to maintain an evocative memory, and holding and soothing introjects of significant people when under stress of separation. The possible childhood origins of these difficulties are explored and related to the ways these issues emerge in psychotherapy. The psychodynamic formulation is crucial in the psychotherapeutic app

The views of practising psychiatrists on the treatment of agoraphobia were investigated as part of a Quality Assurance Project. A one in six random sample of psychiatrists was mailed a questionnaire. This asked for treatment recommendations for each of three case descriptions of patients with agoraphobia and respondents were asked to choose three treatments from a predetermined list of treatments. Eighty-six percent of the sample responded. Behavioural psychotherapy was recommended most often, usually in conjunction with psychodynamic psychotherapy. Recommendations varied across the three case

This study evaluated the impact of psychodynamic inpatient psychotherapy on patients' psychological distress and interpersonal problems during the course of treatment and 1 year later. A total of 156 patients were assessed with the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems at intake, 4 weeks later, and at the end of therapy. The follow-up assessment was conducted 1 year later. Results support psychodynamic approaches as well as the phase model, which stresses that the goals to be achieved by psychotherapeutic interventions are not only improvement of well-being a
