Healthcare Resource Utilization in Controlled Versus Uncontrolled Adults Living With Type 1 Diabetes in the South African Public Healthcare Sector.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to understand the cost implications of managing people living with type 1 diabetes mellitus in the South African public healthcare system. METHODS: A multicenter, noninterventional retrospective chart review study was performed. Data on healthcare resource consumption, demographics, risk factors, clinical history, and acute events were collected. Direct medical costs were collected over a 1-year period, stratified by controlled versus uncontrolled patients. In addition, the costs in people with controlled (glycated hemoglobin < 7%) versus uncontrolled glycated hem

[Alzheimer's disease and pharmacists in contact with the public].

All healthcare professionals are concerned by Alzheimer's disease, which in France will affect, in just a few years, over one million persons, mainly women. Pharmacists have shown particular interest, irrespective of their sector of activity. Here, we wanted to better define the role of colleagues who are constantly in contact with the public, i.e. in France in drug dispensaries and biology laboratories. Within the framework of the French pharmacy committee for health and social education, Cespharm, the Ethics and Communications working group of the 2008-2012 Alzheimer Disease Committee headed

Where health and welfare meet: social deprivation among patients in the emergency department.

CONTEXT: As a safety net provider for many disadvantaged Americans, the emergency department (ED) may be an efficient site not only for providing acute medical care, but also for addressing serious social needs. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the social needs of ED patients, and to evaluate whether the most disadvantaged patients have connections with the health and welfare system outside the ED. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey conducted over 24 hours in the fall of 1997. SETTING: Three EDs: an urban public teaching hospital, a suburban university hospital, and a semirural community hospital. A Review of Socioeconomic Disparities in Submucous Cleft Diagnosis and Outcomes.

Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a common congenital anomaly characterized by a diastasis of the levator veli palitini muscle. The subtlety of SMCP on physical examination can contribute to diagnostic delays. This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to delays in care and subsequent postoperative outcomes in patients with SMCP. All patients with surgical indications for SMCP who underwent palatoplasty at an urban academic children's hospital were included. Patient socioeconomic characteristics, medical history, and postoperative outcomes were collected. Patients were compared based o

Infectious disease and dermatologic conditions in evacuees and rescue workers after Hurricane Katrina--multiple states, August-September, 2005.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck states along the Gulf Coast of the United States. In the days after the hurricane struck, approximately 750 evacuation centers were established in at least 18 states to accommodate more than 200,000 evacuees. State and local health departments, with assistance from CDC, initiated enhanced infectious disease surveillance and outbreak response activities, implemented by teams of public health and rescue workers, including military personnel. Outbreak monitoring included direct reporting of conditions of public health significance to public health agen

Analysis of bilateral development assistance for surgery in low- and middle-income countries: trends, challenges and opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains underfunded despite representing a significant portion of the Global Burden of Disease. Understanding bilateral development assistance for surgery is crucial to address this disparity. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review and quantitative analysis of bilateral development assistance for surgery in LMICs from 2014 to 2022 using data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Creditor Reporting System. Surgical projects were identified throug

Using Public Health Detailing to Increase Access and Confidence in COVID-19 Vaccines and Reinvest in Disproportionately Impacted NYC Communities.

CONTEXT: COVID-19 vaccination rates in New York City (NYC) began to plateau in the spring of 2021, with unacceptable inequities in vaccination rates based on race. PROGRAM: To address racial inequities in vaccination rates and COVID-19 health outcomes, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene adapted a preexisting provider outreach and education program for public health emergency use with the goals of community reinvestment and increasing patient confidence and access to the COVID-19 vaccines. The Vaccine Public Health Detailing (VPHD) program was delivered as part of a larg

Inequality in Drug Utilization among Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia Patients in Malaysia: A Cost-Utility Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The burden of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is increasing due to longer patient survival, better life expectancy of the general population, and increasing drug prices. Funding is one of the main concerns in the choice of CML medication used worldwide; thus, patient assistance programmes were introduced to ensure accessibility to affordable treatment. In this study, we evaluated CML drug distribution inequality in Malaysia through patient assistance programmes, using pharmaco-economics methods to evaluate CML treatment from the care provider's perspective. METHODS: Patients with

The Partnerships for Care Project in Massachusetts: Developing Partnerships and Data Systems to Increase Linkage and Engagement in Care for Individuals Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Before implementation of the Massachusetts Partnerships for Care (MA P4C) project, Massachusetts did not routinely provide HIV partner services to newly diagnosed individuals. Identification of individuals disengaged from HIV care and assistance for re-engagement relied on community- and clinic-based HIV medical case management services. Processes to identify individuals out of HIV care used either surveillance or clinic data, but did not combine both. METHODS: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health collaborated with 6 community health centers to implement HIV partner servi

Federal civil rights policy and mental health treatment access for persons with limited English proficiency.

As noted in the supplement to the U.S. Surgeon General's report on mental health (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2001), overcoming language access barriers associated with limited English proficiency (LEP) should help to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in mental health care access and quality. Federal policy requires remedial action to overcome language barriers: Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Medicaid and other federally funded programs must provide assistance to LEP persons. Some state-level public and mental health authorities have responded by instit

[Evaluation of the Robert Koch Institute's missions for COVID-19 outbreak investigations by local and state health authorities in Germany].

BACKGROUND: Under the German Infection Protection Act, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) can support local health authorities (LHAs) and state health authorities (SHAs) in outbreak investigations after an administrative request for assistance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, about 50 RKI teams supported LHAs and SHAs in outbreak investigations (virtually or on site). Reasons for or against requesting assistance as well as the assessment of outbreak deployments that have taken place should be collected and analysed. METHODS: Between 9 March 2023 and 12 May 2023, the RKI provided all LHAs (n = 376)

Evaluating Country Performance After Transitioning From Gavi Assistance: An Applied Synthetic Control Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decade, international development assistance for health has slowed. As donors seek to increase domestic cofinancing and ultimately transition countries from donor aid dependence, COVID-19 has severely constrained public budgets. The evaluation of sustainability and longer-term impacts of donor withdrawal is increasingly important. We assess vaccination coverage and post-neonatal mortality to estimate country performance of these outcomes among countries that no longer received assistance from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi) between 2000 and 2018. METHODS: Using d

Networking.

Networking involves establishing and using contacts for information, support, and other assistance in order to achieve career goals. Public health nurses must understand the concept, process, and techniques of networking. There are do's and don'ts for effective networking, as well as methods of organizing nurses' networking efforts. The basics of this enjoyable and practical way to get ahead in the profession and to help others at the same time are presented.

Comparative risk perception of the monkeypox outbreak and the monkeypox vaccine.

Based on survey data collected from a nationally representative sample (N = 1,000), this study applies the psychometric paradigm to demonstrate that the American public perceived the monkeypox outbreak as a more dreaded risk than the monkeypox vaccine, but they also viewed the monkeypox vaccine as a more unknown risk. These perceptions influenced their overall risk judgment toward the monkeypox outbreak, support for public health responses and government assistance measures, and likelihood to get vaccinated. Contributing to research on risk perception, these findings indicate that the dread an

Human exposures to a rabid bat - Montana, 2008.

On September 29, 2008, the Ravalli County Public Health Department (RCPHD) notified the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (MDPHHS) of a large-scale human exposure to a dead bat at an elementary school. On October 1, the bat was confirmed to be rabid, and on October 4, MDPHHS requested assistance from CDC in evaluating persons for rabies exposure. Of 107 persons assessed, only one person (1%) was recommended for rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) in accordance with guidance from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP); however, 74 persons (68%) ultimately

Rebuilding trust in public health: Beyond polarization.

The global health landscape has entered a period of profound change. Official development assistance for health has sharply declined, while new U.S. policies threaten long-standing public health norms and undermine evidence-based guidance. Vaccine hesitancy, political interference in medical recommendations, and climate policy reversals illustrate a troubling erosion of scientific authority. These developments coincide with growing polarization, revealing that 'following the science' is neither straightforward nor free from uncertainty. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed how public health decisions

Retrospective Assessment of Preparedness for Mosquito Control Post-Hurricane Florence in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVES: Ideally, mosquito control programs (MCPs) use surveillance to target control measures to potentially dangerous mosquito populations. In North Carolina (NC), where there is limited financial support for mosquito control, communities may suffer from mosquito-related issues post-hurricane due to lack of existing MCPs. Here, study objectives were to (1) investigate the emergency response of a subset of NC counties post-Hurricane Florence and (2) develop guidelines and policy recommendations to assist MCPs in post-hurricane mosquito control response. METHODS: A survey was administered

The decline in family care for the aged in nineteenth-century Ontario: fact or fiction.

Two myths exist concerning the care of the aged in the past. The first purports that the aged were cared for by their families and that public assistance for the aged destroyed familial responsibility towards the elderly. In response to this contention, a second myth, which argues that the aged were not cared for by relatives, highlights the sufferings of abandoned and destitute aged people in institutions. In nineteenth-century Ontario, while the aged were not always cared for by kin, they were rarely willingly abandoned by their families. Evidence from diaries, letters, and institutional rec

Food insecurity and food pantry use among transgender and gender non-conforming people in the Southeast United States.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people face high rates of poverty, joblessness, and homelessness, rendering this population vulnerable to experiencing food insecurity. Yet, there is almost no empirical evidence concerning food insecurity and the use of local and federal food assistance resources in the TGNC community. Food insecurity, the use of local and Federal food assistance resources, and associations with gender-related minority stressors and resilience using the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience (GMSR) scale among TGNC individuals living in the Southeast Uni
