BACKGROUND: We should pay more attention to the long-term monitoring and early warning of type 2 diabetes and its complications. The traditional blood glucose tests are traumatic and cannot effectively monitor the development of diabetic complications. The development of mobile health is changing rapidly. Therefore, we are interested in developing a new noninvasive, economical, and instant-result method to accurately diagnose and monitor type 2 diabetes and its complications.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether type 2 diabetes and its complications, including hypertension and hyperlipide

PURPOSE: The Valsalva manoeuvre (VM) may contribute to the observed increase in pulse wave velocity (PWV) following resistance exercise (RE). However, VM use during RE is rarely reported or discussed in the literature. We compared the acute carotid-femoral PWV response before and following RE with paced breathing, RE with a VM (REVM) and the VM alone.
METHODS: 15 healthy RE-untrained participants (female = 8) (mean ± SD: age, 24 ± 5 years; height, 171.7 ± 10.9 cm; body mass 69.6 ± 14.5 kg) completed in a randomised order (1) RE: 3 sets of 10 repetitions of 4 RE exercises at 60% of 1RM with pa

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing evidence suggests that COVID-19 survivors experience long-term cardiovascular complications possibly through development of vascular damage. The study aimed to investigate whether accelerated vascular ageing occurs after COVID-19 infection, and if so, identify its determinants.
METHODS: This prospective, multicentric, cohort study, included 34 centres in 16 countries worldwide, in 4 groups of participants-COVID-19-negative controls (ⅰ) and three groups of individuals with recent (6 ± 3 months) exposure to SARS-CoV-2: not hospitalized (ⅱ), hospitalized in genera

BACKGROUND: Little is known about arterial stiffness in rural subsistence populations that experience few cardiovascular risk factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study comparing 3 arterial stiffness metrics among Tsimane forager-horticulturalists with 2 representative US cohorts.
METHODS: Arterial elasticity (the inverse of stiffness) markers C1 (large artery elasticity) and C2 (small artery elasticity) were measured using a tonometry device among 490 Tsimane adults (mean age, 51.2±10.1 years; 55% women), and compared with 6294 multiethnic US adults (mean age, 62.0±10.2 years; 52% women)

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal impact of blood pressure (BP) control on the components of arterial stiffness has not been studied.
METHODS: The SPRINT (Systolic BP Intervention Trial) compared an intensive systolic BP goal (<120 mm Hg) to a standard goal (<140 mm Hg). Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured in a subset of participants (n=605) at 0, 1, 2, and 3 years after randomization. Structural stiffening due to remodeling of the vessel wall and load-dependent stiffening, from changes in BP, were calculated by adjusting PWV to a 120/80 mm Hg reference BP with participant-speci

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of human mortality and has become the leading cause of death worldwide. Existing studies indicate that structural and functional damage to the main arteries represents a significant risk factor for early vascular lesions and many CVDs.
AIMS: This study aimed to explore characteristics of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and its correlation with cardiovascular disease risk factors in healthy individuals.
METHODS: Convenience sampling was used to collect demographics, risk factors, and laboratory examinations from 501 healthy

Background Several devices have been proposed to assess arterial stiffness in clinical daily use over the past few years, by estimating aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) from a single measurement of brachial oscillometric blood pressure, using patented algorithms. It is uncertain if these systems are able to provide additional elements, beyond the contribution carried by age and blood pressure levels, in the definition of early vascular damage expressed by the stiffening of the arterial wall. Methods and Results The aim of our study was to compare the estimated algorithm-based PWV values, provi

Carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (cfPWV) is a marker of central arterial stiffness and an established predictor of cardiovascular risk in hypertension. Although elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] concentrations and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, their independent associations with central arterial stiffness and any potential interaction remain incompletely defined. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 366 adults with treated hypertension. Central arterial stiffness was assessed using cfPWV. Plasma Lp(a) concentrations were categ

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating the association between depression and aortic stiffness in older patients with type 2 diabetes are lacking. We postulated an association between depressive symptoms and aortic stiffness, and this relationship may be mediated by increased adiposity.
METHODS: We analyzed participants with type 2 diabetes aged 55 years or older (n = 958). We measured aortic stiffness using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cut-off ≥ 12 m/s) using the tonometry method. We defined depressive symptoms as a score of greater than 5 on the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15). Ad

ObjectiveTo investigate the association between the endothelial activation and stress index and cardiovascular disease prevalence among postmenopausal women and to evaluate whether arterial stiffness, assessed by estimated pulse wave velocity, statistically accounts for part of this association.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 9877 postmenopausal women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2018). Endothelial activation and stress index was log-transformed (LnEASIX), and arterial stiffness was assessed using estimated pulse wave velocity. Logistic regr

Dynamic elastography uses an imaging system to visualize the propagation of elastic waves, the speed of which is directly related to the elasticity felt by palpation. Very few studies have focused on X-ray elastography because of the technical challenges it poses: a planar image of an integration volume at a very slow sampling rate. We demonstrate that tracking a slow elastic wave guided along a one-dimensional structure could provide a possible solution. The recently discovered flexural pulse wave, which is naturally generated by heartbeats and propagates along arteries, is the perfect candid

Research on chronic aerobic exercise (AE) and arterial stiffness has yielded mixed results, largely due to differences in participant characteristics and training protocols. This meta-analysis included 26 trials (40 interventions; n=756; average age 42±15 y) to assess AE's effect on arterial stiffness, measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV) and to explore moderating factors. AE programs averaged 40±19 minutes/session, 3±1 d/wk, over 11±8 weeks, with intensities between 3 and 8 METs. Random-effects analysis showed AE significantly reduced central (- 1.02 m/s), mixed (- 0.34 m/s), and peripheral

Respiratory polygraphy (RP) underestimates the obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI) compared to polysomnography (PSG) because it does not account for respiratory events associated with cortical arousals. To address this issue, RP can incorporate respiratory events associated with autonomic arousals, identified by drops in pulse wave amplitude (PWAD), obtained from the oximetry signal. This study aimed to compare the OAHI measured by RP alone, RP incorporating respiratory events associated with PWAD, and PSG. PSG recordings from 91 children (median age [1st; 3rd quartile]: 10 [8; 14]years) w

Atherosclerosis is the main cause of ischemic stroke. It occurs as a condition that leads to thickening of the arterial blood vessel walls and narrowing of the blood vessels, which can seriously affect the normal flow of blood. Currently, the detection of arterial stenosis relies on large-scale hospital equipment like computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which require specialized technicians to operate and are not convenient for daily use. In addition, stenosis affects multiple parameters of hemodynamics in the blood flow field, and relying on a single physical quanti
