Aspects of childhood physical punishment and family environment correlates in bulimia nervosa.

Although histories of child sexual abuse among eating disorder patients have attracted considerable attention in the past decade, relatively little is known about parental physical abuse among these patients. We examined aspects of childhood parental physical punishment and its family environmental correlates among women with a lifetime history of bulimia nervosa (BN group; n = 80) and women with no history of eating disorder (Control group; n = 40), recruited primarily by newspaper advertisement. Women in the BN group reported significantly more physical punishment and perceived their discipl

How does collective punishment work? The role of anticipated negative intragroup reactions.

Intragroup collective punishment has been a common sanctioning practice throughout history and remains prevalent in modern societies. Yet, we know little about its effectiveness and even less about the psychological processes that might explain it. Theoretical approaches that deem collective punishment effective assume that the threat of a group-level sanction promotes an internal control system. We argue that even without internal control systems, people's anticipation of negative intragroup reactions for activating collective punishment can render it effective. We present four experiments, t

Intergenerational inferences about punishment: Judgments of children of incarcerated parents across development.

Some scholars argue that punishment communicates information about punished individuals. We extended this theorizing by asking whether laypeople (237 5- to 6-year-olds, 221 7- to 8-year-olds, 220 adults) understand punishment as communicating messages about individuals not directly implicated in punishment-related scenarios and how this understanding might change across development. Three studies asked U.S. 5- to 8-year-olds and adults to indicate the extent to which they believe that adults' incarceration is attributable to their biological relatives. In Study 1, children were more likely tha

Neural interactions in the human frontal cortex dissociate reward and punishment learning.

How human prefrontal and insular regions interact while maximizing rewards and minimizing punishments is unknown. Capitalizing on human intracranial recordings, we demonstrate that the functional specificity toward reward or punishment learning is better disentangled by interactions compared to local representations. Prefrontal and insular cortices display non-selective neural populations to rewards and punishments. Non-selective responses, however, give rise to context-specific interareal interactions. We identify a reward subsystem with redundant interactions between the orbitofrontal and ve

Random interval schedule of reinforcement influences punishment resistance for cocaine in rats.

In an animal model of compulsive drug use, a subset of rats continues to self-administer cocaine despite footshock consequences and is considered punishment resistant. We recently found that punishment resistance is associated with habits that persist under conditions that typically encourage a transition to goal-directed control. Given that random ratio (RR) and random interval (RI) schedules of reinforcement influence whether responding is goal-directed or habitual, we investigated the influence of these schedules on punishment resistance for cocaine or food. Male and female Sprague Dawley r

Differentiating corporal punishment from physical abuse in the prediction of lifetime aggression.

Corporal punishment and parental physical abuse often co-occur during upbringing, making it difficult to differentiate their selective impacts on psychological functioning. Associations between corporal punishment and a number of lifetime aggression indicators were examined in this study after efforts to control the potential influence of various forms of co-occurring maltreatment (parental physical abuse, childhood sexual abuse, sibling abuse, peer bullying, and observed parental violence). College students (N = 1,136) provided retrospective self-reports regarding their history of aggression

Early parental physical punishment and emotional and behavioural outcomes in preschool children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is an association between being smacked by your main caregiver in the first two years and emotional and behavioural problems at age four. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of data from the Growing Up in Scotland Prospective Study (GUS). SETTING: Scotland, UK. PARTICIPANTS: GUS birth cohort children, whose main caregiver had no concerns about their behaviour at 22 months. EXPOSURE: Ever smacked by main caregiver in first 22 months, as measured by caregiver self-report at 22 months. MAIN OUTCOME: Emotional and behavioural problems as measured by parental asses

Reciprocity: weak or strong? What punishment experiments do (and do not) demonstrate.

Economists and biologists have proposed a distinction between two mechanisms--"strong" and "weak" reciprocity--that may explain the evolution of human sociality. Weak reciprocity theorists emphasize the benefits of long-term cooperation and the use of low-cost strategies to deter free-riders. Strong reciprocity theorists, in contrast, claim that cooperation in social dilemma games can be sustained by costly punishment mechanisms, even in one-shot and finitely repeated games. To support this claim, they have generated a large body of evidence concerning the willingness of experimental subjects

Paternal psychosocial characteristics and corporal punishment of their 3-year-old children.

This study uses data from 2,309 biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study (FFCWS) to examine associations between psychosocial characteristics and levels of corporal punishment (CP) toward their 3-year-old children over the past month. Results indicate that 61% of the fathers reported no CP over the past month, 23% reported using CP once or twice, and 16% reported using CP a few times in the past month or more. In multivariate models controlling for important sociodemographic factors as well as characteristics of the child, fathers' parenting stress

Different neural systems adjust motor behavior in response to reward and punishment.

Individuals use the outcomes of their actions to adjust future behavior. However, it remains unclear whether the same neural circuits are used to adjust behavior due to rewarding and punishing outcomes. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a reward-providing reaction time task to investigate the adaptation of a simple motor response following four different outcomes (delivery versus omission and monetary gain versus loss). We found that activation in the thalamus and insula predicted adjustments of motor responses due to outcomes that were cued and delivered, whereas a

Low cortisol levels and the balance between punishment sensitivity and reward dependency.

The neuro-endocrinological basis of psychopathy, a disorder characterized by lack of fear, is relatively unknown. However, low levels of cortisol may result in fearlessness and have been observed in individuals with psychopathic tendencies. Low fear models state that psychopaths are not motivated to avoid punishment, especially when reward is pending. In agreement, disadvantageous decision making on the IOWA gambling task in psychopaths and psychopathic analogous, indicates low punishment sensitivity and high reward dependency. Here, it was investigated whether low basal cortisol levels predic

To nullify and punish: "Sexual conversion practices" as acts of torture in Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: The formulation of the legal definition of torture has sparked an ongoing debate concerning the relative weight of its three constitutive elements: the infliction of either physical or mental pain or suffering, its intentional character, and its specific purpose. Whilst some interpretations privilege intentionality as the central defining characteristic, others stipulate purpose as the decisive criterion for identifying torture. This article assesses whether the so-called "sexual conversion practices" satisfy these elements and examines the role of specific purpose as an interpre

Validation of the Polish adaptation of the Students' Punishment Sensitivity Scale in an educational context.

BACKGROUND: Reinforcement sensitivity theory highlights the crucial role of two systems: the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and the behavioral activation system (BAS) in explaining one's tendency to respond to positive or adverse stimuli in diverse contexts, including educational. However, there is a lack of measurements that capture the punishment mechanism underlying students' reactions when confronted with others' opinions on their school failures. The research project aimed to test the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the students' punishment sensitivity (SPS-PL) in the

Polygenic Risks for Depression and Neural Responses to Reward and Punishment in Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research has shown aberrant reward and punishment processing in people with depression. Genetic risks contribute to depression, but whether or how these risks of depression may affect behavioral and neural responses to reward and punishment remains unclear. METHODS: We curated the data of 879 young adults performing a gambling task during brain imaging from the Human Connectome Project. Depression severity was assessed with the Achenbach Adult Self Report. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for depression were computed for all participants. With published routines and at a cor

The effect of combining punishment and reward can transfer to opposite motor learning.

Recent laboratory findings have demonstrated that, when imposed separately, punishment and reward have different effects on motor learning. In real-world applications, however, they are usually used in combination to improve human behavior. For instance, a student may be punished when failing an examination and rewarded when getting a high score. It remains unclear precisely how people are motivated when punishment and reward are combined. Moreover, whether it is possible for the effects of punishment and reward to transfer to other learning situations remains unknown. In the present study, fo

Punishment as a scarce resource: a potential policy intervention for managing incarceration rates.

Scholars have proposed that incarceration rates might be reduced by a requirement that judges justify incarceration decisions with respect to their operational costs (e.g., prison capacity). In an Internet-based vignette experiment (N = 214), we tested this prediction by examining whether criminal punishment judgments (prison vs. probation) among university undergraduates would be influenced by a prompt to provide a justification for one's judgment, and by a brief message describing prison capacity costs. We found that (1) the justification prompt alone was sufficient to reduce incarceration r

Perceptions of collective and other unjust punishment in Swiss prisons: a qualitative exploration.

PURPOSE: This paper aims to describe and analyse Swiss prisoners' and experts' views on collective punishment, the practice where a group is punished for one person's transgression. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A series of qualitative interviews with prisoners and stakeholders are reported following thematic analysis. FINDINGS: Despite being forbidden by the Geneva Convention and other international instruments, participants from this study expressed the view that collective punishment continues to be practiced in some form in prisons in Switzerland, violating the rights of prisoners via unj

Optimizing the social utility of judicial punishment: An evolutionary biology and neuroscience perspective.

Punishment as a response to impairment of individual or group welfare may be found not only among humans but also among a wide range of social animals. In some cases, acts of punishment serve to increase social cooperation among conspecifics. Such phenomena motivate the search for the biological foundations of punishment among humans. Of special interest are cases of pro-social punishment of individuals harming others. Behavioral studies have shown that in economic games people punish exploiters even at a cost to their own welfare. Additionally, neuroimaging studies have reported activity duri

Teachers' and Students' Support for Corporal Punishment-A Practice Outlawed by the Government of Kenya.

Application of corporal punishment (CP) in Kenyan schools continues to be controversial in that CP is banned but esteemed by parents, some teachers, and even students. This investigation sought to establish and describe participants' degrees of support for the application of CP in schools in Eldoret Municipality. Randomly selected samples of 86 teachers and 192 students were investigated for their support of CP through survey questionnaires. Data analysis was undertaken using nonparametric and descriptive statistics. Teacher support for CP was found to be undifferentiated by gender, teaching e

Sensitivity for Cues Predicting Reward and Punishment in Young Women with Eating Disorders.

Increasing evidence shows that sensitivity to reward (SR) and punishment (SP) may be involved in eating disorders (EDs). Most studies used self-reported positive/negative effect in rewarding/punishing situations, whereas the implied proneness to detect signals of reward/punishment is largely ignored. This pilot study used a spatial orientation task to examine transdiagnostic and interdiagnostic differences in SR/SP. Participants (14-29 years) were patients with anorexia nervosa of restricting type (AN-R, n = 20), binge/purge ED group [AN of binge/purge type and bulimia nervosa (n = 16)] and no
